JAPANESE CONNECTING PALOMARES WITH FUKUSHIMA

The Japanese newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun, has moved its Paris correspondent to the village of Palomares, where he is reporting on the plutonium waste that has been littering the area for over 45 years. He is said to be looking at possible similarities connecting the 1956 aircraft accident to the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster that occurred on 11 March last year following the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

The Japanese journalist said that he was surprised at the" naturalness "with which people living near contaminated areas have come to quietly accept their situation, continuing to stay in Palomares after so many years with the radioactive soil.

The contaminated soil is the result of a nuclear accident which occurred on January 17, 1966 when two U.S. aircraft collided in mid air.

Of the four Mk28 type hydrogen bombs being carried by the B-52G aircraft, three were found on land near the Palomares. The non-nuclear explosives in two of the weapons detonated upon impacting the ground, resulting in the contamination of a 2-square-kilometer (490-acre) (0.78 square mile) area by radioactive plutonium. The fourth bomb, which fell into the Mediterranean Sea, was recovered intact after a 2½-month-long search.
