Japan is under pressure to enhance food inspections as it has no centralized system for detecting radiation contamination. About two-thirds of Japan’s prefectures now plan to check rice crops, the Mainichi newspaper reported yesterday, citing its own survey. Half of Japan’s rice is grown within range of emissions from the crippled nuclear plant, and farmers are awaiting the results of tests before harvesting begins this month.

This is a staple of their diet...1/2 of the country's rice will not be edible, or should not be edible.

Radioactive isotope, maybe from Fukushima, detected, but ...

Very small amounts of a radioactive isotope of sulfur, believed to have traveled across the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, have been detected in La Jolla, Calif., by UC San Diego scientists.

Japan's radiation leaks

DANGERS FROM THE NUCLEAR LEAKS AT JAPAN'S Fukushima Daiichi power plant still exist.

In a statement released on July 31, China's State Oceanic Administration announced that the waters in the Western Pacific region east and southeast of Fukushima are "clearly affected" by the radioactive materials that have leaked from the crippled nuclear power plant.

The results of the tests deserve serious attention. Elevated levels of radioactive cesium-137 and -134, as well as strontium-90 were found in samples collected from these areas.

According to the oceanic administration, cesium-134 can't be detected in seawater under normal conditions, while the amount of cesium-137 detected in the samples was 300 times the normal background radiation level in China's territorial waters and the strontium-90 level was 10 times the normal level.

Japan's nuclear watchdog, the Nuclear Safety Commission, has denied public access to the results of thyroid check-ups for more than 1,000 Fukushima children that were exposed to radiation after the March 11 natural disasters made Fukushima Daiichi the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

Murky Science Clouded Japan Nuclear Response

That evening, a late-winter snow began falling on this mountain village. Residents awakened the next day to a blanket of white over their homes, roads, cow pastures and pine forests. They stepped outside and began shoveling.

Back in Tokyo, officials had information suggesting that the snow carried radiation to this community 17 miles from the stricken plant, well outside the government's evacuation zone. Nevertheless, a week passed before government officials gave residents any clear indication that their town of 6,000 had become a nuclear "hot spot,"

UC Researchers Produce First Quantitative Estimate of Fukushima Radiation Leak

On the other side of the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California on March 28, 2011, Thiemens and his team noticed an "unprecedented spike" in radioactive sulfur in the air. They used a model, which was based on the NOAA's observations of atmospheric conditions, to determine the path the air took to get to California over the previous 10 days, and found that it had come from Fukushima Daiichi.

The next step was to calculate how much radiation had leaked from the reactor based on the path over the Pacific Ocean. They took into account that some sulfate particles had fallen into the ocean or decayed along the way, and concluded that 400 billion neutrons were released per square meter surface of the cooling pools. They predicted that this occurred between March 13, 2011 and March 20, 2011. March 13 was when operators began flooding the reactor with seawater.

The explosive truth behind Fukushima's meltdown

Throughout the months of lies and misinformation, one story has stuck: it was the earthquake that knocked out the plant's electric power, halting cooling to its six reactors. The tsunami then washed out the plant's back-up generators 40 minutes later, shutting down all cooling and starting the chain of events that would cause the world's first triple meltdown.

But what if recirculation pipes and cooling pipes burst after the earthquake – before the tidal wave reached the facilities; before the electricity went out? This would surprise few people familiar with the 40-year-old reactor one, the grandfather of the nuclear reactors still operating in Japan.

Problems with the fractured, deteriorating, poorly repaired pipes and the cooling system had been pointed out for years. In September 2002, Tepco admitted covering up data about cracks in critical circulation pipes. In their analysis of the cover-up, The Citizen's Nuclear Information Centre writes: "The records that were covered up had to do with cracks in parts of the reactor known as recirculation pipes. These pipes are there to siphon off heat from the reactor. If these pipes were to fracture, it would result in a serious accident in which coolant leaks out."

On 2 March, nine days before the meltdown, government watchdog the Nuclear Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) warned Tepco on its failure to inspect critical pieces of equipment at the plant, including recirculation pumps. Tepco was ordered to make the inspections, perform repairs if needed and report to NISA on 2 June. It does not appear, as of now, that the report has been filed.

Model Estimates Neutron Leak From Japanese Nuclear Plant

A model based on measurements of radioactive 35S in sulfate aerosols and SO2 gas estimates that concentrations at the Fukushima marine boundary are around 365 times higher than normal, and that the radioactive sulphate reached Southern California, according to a study published online Aug. 15 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Residents frustrated by 'hot spot' designation

A growing number of residents have expressed discontent over the differing standards applied by the government to designate sites found to be high in radioactive substances as areas recommended for evacuation in the ongoing nuclear crisis.

In addition to the 30-kilometer zone set by the central government for evacuation following the outbreak of the crisis, the government in June decided to designate hot spots and recommended evacuation for people living near them.

A total of 245 households in Minami-Soma, Date and Kawauchimura, all in Fukushima Prefecture, have been designated as such spots.

Eyes on the Radioactive Wind, Scientists in California Study the Fukushima Meltdown

This week, scientists at Scripps published their readings of radioactive sulfur collected in the atmosphere in San Diego after the meltdown. These allowed them to extrapolate backwards to learn roughly how many neutrons were shed by the melting cores as workers desperately doused them in sea water, helping scientists understand the damage undergone by the cores and demonstrating the kind of remote science that may be required to help understand the events that led to meltdown.

Not So Fast: While such back-calculations are an intriguing way to study the meltdown, an atmospheric scientist interviewed by ScienceNOW points out that the 6,200 miles between Japan and San Diego is a very long way for particles to travel. There must therefore be significant uncertainty in the team’s calculation of how much sulfur-35 was produced in the air above the nuclear plant.

It's war at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko regularly faces the sharp end of Republican spears for his work to shut down the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, but his biggest clash appears not to be with Capitol Hill but with fellow NRC Commissioner Kristine Svinicki.

Mountains of debris stand in the way of quake reconstruction.

With the introduction of the bill seeking to put direct control of the cleanup process under the jurisdiction of the national government at the request of affected municipalities, it is hoped that the government will get up to speed in the handling of the debris.

However, the government is not planning to include in its 'wide-area' processing and debris disposal, debris from Fukushima Prefecture that is feared contaminated with radioactive material from the nuclear accident. Moving it outside of the prefecture would prove difficult, and there is a long road ahead before this debris, which suffered from both natural and man-made disasters, can be properly processed.

Excessive levels of radioactive cesium found 100 km from plant

Excessive levels of radioactive cesium were found in sludge in a ditch at a district court branch in Fukushima Prefecture, about 100 kilometers west of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, the court said Tuesday.

The isotope in the sludge, sampled from a ditch at the Fukushima District Court's Aizuwakamatsu branch, measured about 186,000 becquerels per kilogram, the court said, adding it plans to remove the sludge after consulting with local governments.

Under government standards, sludge can be used in a landfill as long as the radioactive cesium contained in it measures 8,000 becquerels per kilogram or lower.
