NYPD, suburban forces share anti-terrorism duties

So hundreds of suburban officers now wear small radiation detectors that might catch a dirty bomb headed for Manhattan; Westchester County police scout and share information on potential targets that could affect New York City, like the dam and the Indian Point nuclear plant; officers from the entire metropolitan area take part in terrorism drills and briefings; and they have formed personal relationships that will improve emergency response, officials say.

Gundersen Illustrates Fukishima Radiation Spreading World Wide

In a second area of concern, Fairewinds disagrees the NRC's latest report claiming that all Fukushima spent fuel pools had no problems following the earthquake. In a new revelation, the NRC claims that the plutonium found more than 1 mile offsite actually came from inside the nuclear reactors. If such a statement were true, it indicates that the nuclear power plant containments failed and were breached with debris landing far from the power plants themselves. Such a failure of the containment system certainly necessitates a complete review of all US reactor containment design and industry assurances that containments will hold in radioactivity in the event of a nuclear accident. The evidence Fairewinds reviewed to date continues to support its April analysis that the detonation in the Unit 3 Spent Fuel pool was the cause of plutonium found off site.

US quake prompts review of nuclear plants

The quake was centred 65km northwest of Richmond. Two nuclear reactors at North Anna were automatically taken off line by safety systems.

No damage was reported at the plant, which is being powered by emergency diesel generators.

The quake was also felt at the Surry nuclear plant near Newport News, Virginia.

Besides Surry, the other plants declaring an unusual event were the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant in Maryland; Peach Bottom, Three Mile Island, Susquehanna and Limerick plants in Pennsylvania; Salem, Hope Creek and Oyster Creek in New Jersey, Shearon Harris in North Carolina; and D.C. Cook and Palisades in Michigan.

Half of Fukushima children exposed to radiation say leaked data – but is even that too low?

Information released to the press by an anonymous government official on the results of thyroid gland tests taken on over 1000 children living around the devastated Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant reveal nearly half of them show traces of radioactivity.

Slivyak contradicted the new assurances that there were no dangers to the screened children.

“All of them are at extremely high risk of contracting cancer at some point,” he said.

“It is difficult to trust the Japanese government when last spring it failed to evacuate people for long periods of time from areas that were highly radioactive,” he said.

TEPCO Reported Tsunami Threat 4 Days Before Fukushima Disaster

The regulators told reporters Wednesday that the plant's operators, Tokyo Electric Power Company, determined in 2008 that the plant could be hit by a tsunami more than 10 meters high. But the findings, based on a computer simulation of a major undersea earthquake, were not passed along until March 7 of this year.

Fukushima radiation spread as far as Romania

Radiation from the Fukushima nuclear accident, which took place in Japan earlier this year, spread to most parts of the northern hemisphere, a new study shows. Rainwater and milk samples in Romania, a distance of over 10,000 km from Japan, contained traces of radioactive iodine in the days following the accident.

"Safe" radiation levels after Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster challenged by citizens

In fact, the iodine-131 levels at Old Massett tested above background until early May. Background for iodine-131 is around zero because it doesn’t occur naturally.

And even though the level never exceeded the Canadian ceiling, that didn’t necessarily mean it was safe. In fact, Japan’s five-month-old nuclear crisis has focused attention on a dirty secret of the nuclear industry: its version of “safe” isn’t necessarily the public’s.

The Canadian ceiling for radiation is set at a level that causes 7.3 cancers per million people each year, according to Health Canada’s website—or 511 lifetime cancers over 70 years of exposure per million people. Spread over 33 million Canadians, that’s 17,000 lifetime cancers. (About half are fatal.)

“If it’s causing cancer, it’s not safe,” said Gordon Edwards, president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, in a phone interview from Montreal.
