GAO Report: Nuclear Material Sent Overseas Remains Unaccounted For WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 -- Nuclear material, including enriched uranium that could be used in weapons of mass destruction, sent overseas by the United States as part of nuclear cooperation agreements has not been fully accounted for, the Government Accountability Office revealed. The Department of Energy and Nuclear Regulatory Commission have been the two agencies responsible for keeping track of much of the material, but those agencies also have been unable to confirm the location and security of the material in all cases. The highly-enriched uranium is a product that could be used in applications such as weapons. Further, visits to facilities where highly-enriched uranium and other nuclear materials from the U.S. were in use found that adequate security measures existed only approximately half of the time. While the DOE has taken steps to improve security, each country has been in charge of its own security program [ link to www.utilityproducts.com] - Nice to know where your nuke supplies are.
