This is not entirely correct: The national government is not monitoring food; it has instructed local authorities to do so. The monitoring is not mandatory.

Ban told a high-level meeting at the General Assembly that the meltdown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant after the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan in March was a wake-up call for the world.

Chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano, said in a statement that public confidence in nuclear power could be restored only if governments, regulators, plant operators and the IAEA worked together and were highly transparent.

NRC plans inspection of Richland nuclear power plant

Until the inspection team arrives Monday, Energy Northwest will not know specifically what its concerns are. But it anticipates it will want to talk about five events that occurred while the plant was shut down from early April until this month for scheduled refueling and replacement of its condenser.

Three of the incidents were linked to loss of some of the water covering the fuel in the reactor, which Energy Northwest believes may be the special inspection's main focus. As a third of the fuel assemblies are replaced during refueling outages every other year, additional water is added to keep the used fuel under water, which provides radioactive shielding, as it is being removed.

U.S. nuke regulators weaken safety rules


Examples abound. When valves leaked, more leakage was allowed -- up to 20 times the original limit. When cracking caused radioactive leaks in steam generator tubing, an easier test was devised so plants could meet standards.

Failed cables. Busted seals. Broken nozzles, clogged screens, cracked concrete, dented containers, corroded metals and rusty underground pipes and thousands of other problems linked to aging were uncovered in AP's yearlong investigation. And many of them could escalate dangers during an accident.

Last year, the NRC weakened the safety margin for acceptable radiation damage to reactor vessels -- for a second time. The standard is based on a reactor vessel's "reference temperature," which predicts when it will become dangerously brittle and vulnerable to failure. Through the years, many plants have violated or come close to violating the standard.

As a result, the minimum standard was relaxed first by raising the reference temperature 50 percent, and then 78 percent above the original -- even though a broken vessel could spill radioactive contents.

"We've seen the pattern," said nuclear safety scientist Dana Powers, who works for Sandia National Laboratories and also sits on an NRC advisory committee. "They're ... trying to get more and more out of these plants."

Iran in talks with Russia on new N-plant

Govt to financially support geothermal generation

Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry says it will support companies that invest in geothermal power generation projects.

Geothermal generation uses high-temperature steam produced by underground water heated by volcanic activity.

The ministry predicts that geothermal generation will be a key source of renewable energy in Japan, which has many volcanoes.

Intl flights resume at Sendai Airport

Sendai Airport in northeastern Japan has resumed international services that had been suspended since the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. Passengers boarded the first flight to Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday.

Sendai Airport restarted domestic services in July, but many international airlines delayed making a decision because they wanted to see the outcome of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Safety limit radioactive cesium in Fukushima rice

Radioactive cesium measuring just at the government-set safety limit has been detected in rice samples collected in an area in northeastern Fukushima Prefecture.

Officials say 500 becquerels per kilogram of cesium was found in a test on pre-harvest rice from Nihonmatsu City on Friday. The figure is the highest in such tests carried out for rice across the country.

Burying of radioactive household waste challenging

Japan's environment ministry says that the disposal of radioactive ashes from household garbage is not going well in Tokyo and surrounding areas, partly due to residents' objections.

Following the nuclear accident in Fukushima, waste facilities in the Tohoku, Kanto and Koshin-etsu regions showed that ashes in garbage from private homes contained radioactive cesium.

The ministry has set guidelines for disposing of the ashes. They say that if the level is 8,000 becquerels per kilogram or lower, the ashes can be buried. For ashes with cesium levels between 8,000 and 100,000 becquerels, the ministry says they must be deposited in cement and put in concrete vessels.

Hydrogen check ordered at No.2, 3 reactors

Japan's nuclear safety agency has instructed the operator of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to check if hydrogen is building up in its No.2 and 3 reactors.

This is after the Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, recently detected hydrogen in a pipe leading to the containment vessel of No.1 reactor. A hydrogen explosion occurred at the No.1 reactor on March 12th, after the March 11th quake and tsunami.

So now their admitting that their is Hydrogen. So the zirconium alloy must still be producing some.

So the low temperatures they are reporting can't be the real temperatures, either their not telling the truth, they are broken or the core has moved further away from the gauge. For Hydrogen to be produced the temp has to be around 500°C–2000°C.

They are reporting that the hydrogen detected is around 1% of the atmosphere. If it reaches 4% there is a big chance of an explosion if Oxygen is around 5%.

This is a very volatile situation. If they can't control or ameliorate the hydrogen there will be more explosions.

They have pumped liquid nitrogen into the vessels to displace the hydrogen. If this is no longer working it is because the hydrogen is being produced in the ground under the reactors where they can't do anything about it. Very bad.

The United Nations Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights should accept the invitation to investigate the violation of children's rights in Fukushima, but that investigation alone will not solve the problem. The international community must assist Japan in widening the evacuation zone, giving priority to families with children and increasing support for all evacuees.

We also must provide financial and technical support to decontaminate the region effectively, beginning with those places most frequently occupied by children and pregnant women. Finally, and most important, we must pool our global expertise and resources to contain the radiation emanating from the nuclear plant once and for all.

If its true that the corium is producing hydrogen directly from the ground water, then it must also be producing oxygen. Im still wondering if an explosion might actually help? by maybe dispersing the corium?

Allready workers at the plant are saying that there are areas that they simply cannot access, so there isnt much they can actually do. They just keep putting more and more "access denied" orange cones around. I read that on fukushima diary or Radioactive chat, one or the other.

Eventually they just wont be able to work there anymore.

Maybe this has been mentioned before, as I am sure I am not the only one observing this...but is that wavy haze in the Fukushima videos around the plant since the accident the intense radiation in the air? Or is Japan just suddenly hot as Iraq and generating heat waves on camera?

It is probably heat distortion. The radiation is there but doesn't distort light waves as far as I know. Been very hot in Japan this summer.

I must admit that it could be from radiation since I can find no evidence to disprove this theory.
