EDF Underestimated Radioactivity in Deadly Waste-Site Explosion

Electricite de France SA, Europe’s biggest power producer, underestimated radioactivity levels in a furnace that exploded at a waste-processing site this month, killing one and injuring four, the nuclear watchdog said.

The watchdog had previously sought safety improvements at the facility, while allowing it to continue to operate.

Some 4 metric tons of metal with 30 million becquerels of radioactivity was in the melting furnace of the plant at the time of the accident, it said. The operator had initially said the level of radioactivity was 63,000 becquerels.

Japan Discovers Plutonium Far From Crippled Reactor .

Trace amounts of plutonium were found as far as 28 miles from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear-power plant, the first time that the dangerous element released from the accident was found outside of the immediate area of the plant.

The government also reported a rare detection of strontium, another highly dangerous element, far from the crippled reactor, in one spot as far away as 50 miles. Most of the radioactive material discovered to date in the communities surrounding Fukushima Daiichi has been cesium or iodine.

Plutonium had previously been detected in Japan after atmospheric nuclear tests, sometimes at higher levels than were found from the June-July samples, a science ministry official said. However, the ministry cites higher-than-usual level of Plutonium-238 found in the soil samples from the six locations as evidence that plutonium release was not limited to the plant's compound.

Strontium-89 and -90 were also found in almost half of the 100 samples, in one case as far as the edge of the 50-mile zone registering measurement of 500 becquerels per square meter of Strontium-89 and 130 becquerels of Strontium-90.

Japan Lifts Evacuation Advisories Near Nuclear Plant

Despite continued fears over radiation levels, Japan lifted evacuation advisories for an area spanning five towns and cities around a tsunami-ravaged nuclear power plant on Friday, the first such move since multiple fuel meltdowns at the site led to a substantial radiation leak and forced more than 100,000 surrounding residents to flee.

Radioactive water found beneath Georgia nuclear Plant Hatch

He said the utility hoped to identify the source of the leak no later than Sunday afternoon and intended to have it repaired early next week. While the size of the leak was unknown, it was enough to raise the water table in the wells about five feet. Both reactors at the site were functioning normally and showed no other signs of water loss.

"We really don't know what the rate is," Madison said. "We know it's more than a drip."

Tritium is a radioactive form of hydrogen that gets created as a byproduct inside nuclear reactors. It is commonly found in water.

The maximum concentrations of tritium reported inside the wells was more than 200 times the limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water, according to a report that Southern Co. officials filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

GE calls for shut-down tests on reactors worldwide

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy has warned operators of boiling water reactors (BWR) worldwide - including 35 in the US - that the plants could fail to shut automatically during an earthquake, potentially risking the safety of the power plant.

In an event notification posted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission this week, GE Hitachi told nuclear operators to conduct tests to determine what conditions would prevent the reactors from shutting safely during an earth quake.

Most radioactive cesium that spread to forests accumulated in leaves

About 70 percent of radioactive cesium that spread to forests from the tsunami-hit Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant has accumulated in tree leaves and fallen leaves, a government survey has suggested.

The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry has made the estimation based on a survey conducted at a cedar forest in Otama, Fukushima Prefecture, approximately 60 kilometers away from the crippled power station.

Based on the estimation and an experiment at a forest in the prefecture city of Koriyama, the ministry says removing fallen leaves will be effective in reducing levels of radiation in the atmosphere around tainted forests.

Andreyeva Bay: A tour of a decades-old radioactive dump on its way to recovery

After nearly three decades, the site ceased to accept nuclear and radioactive waste for storage – but not before structural defects combined with overall neglect led to a massive leak of radioactive water from the SNF storage pool in Andreyeva Bay’s Building 5 and to damage sustained by a vast number of spent fuel assemblies in storage.

In 1996, Bellona first sounded the alarm, drawing Russia and the international community’s attention to the deplorable condition of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste in Andreyeva Bay – a situation that some experts considered to be precarious enough to result in a spontaneous chain reaction, which could bring the already off-the-chart levels of contamination on the base’s premises to catastrophic proportions.

Mullen ties Pakistan government to U.S. attacks

The U.S. may be on a “collision course” with nuclear-armed Pakistan because of its continued support for the insurgents killing U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, directly linked the Pakistani government to recent attacks on U.S. forces during his final testimony to Congress on Sept. 23. He retires Oct. 1.

Mullen said the Pakistani spy agency — known as the Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI — has been providing direct support for the so-called Haqqani network, a faction of the Afghan insurgency that is distinct from the Taliban and operates from bases inside northwest Pakistan.

The Haqqani network is linked to the spate of recent high-profile attacks in Afghanistan, including the Sept. 13 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul that killed seven people, and a massive truck bomb attack on a NATO outpost Sept. 10 that killed five.

On alert

Stan Luther was on alert when the sirens sounded, sending him scurrying to the B-47 bomber he piloted at Schilling Air Force Base.

The war birds were positioned on the tarmac near the north end of the runway just west of Salina. Luther, of Medford, Ore., was among dozens of pilots and crewmen on duty in the Strategic Air Command facility during October 1962 for the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Air Force was ordered to disperse during the 1962 crisis, which sent aircraft to several airports across the country. Luther's and Moore's bomber was among six that went to the Columbus Municipal Airport in Ohio, where they stayed for three weeks.

"We had nuclear weapons on board. We were going toward the target, toward Russia," Luther said.

The bombers had lock boxes with "go codes" needed to deploy their weapons, Moore said.

To pay for fuel at the city airport, "somebody had to pull out a credit card," he said.

I can tell you to a 100% certainty that Cesium 137, Iodine 131, and Xenon 133 have been detected in Canada, the USA, Europe, and is still spreading worldwide.

Check out this article on my website, has all the gory details.

The truly sad part is that even on a forum GLP you still get blatant denial that we are all in REAL DEEP SHIT.

Infant mortality is apparently already on the rise in the US.
I expect that the radioactive cesium will be detected in our food supply very shortly, if not already. Fukushima recently was hit by an earthquake that cracked the ground and radioactive steam is now venting from there. This is indicative of meltdown into the core, as water is vaporized and massive amounts of radiation are released into the Jetstream.

Fukushima plant crisis could erupt if water injection stops for 38 hrs
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. has released an estimate that says if water injection at its stricken Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant stops, its fuel rods could start melting in 38 hours, causing radioactive substances to spew out.

The utility said, however, it can resume watering at the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors in three hours at the most in case the plant is hit by another earthquake and tsunami matching the scale of the March 11 disaster that caused their core meltdowns.

The estimate said the temperature of the fuel, now believed to have solidified at the bottom of the reactors' pressure vessels, would rise about 50 C each hour and reach its melting point of 2,200 C in about 38 hours.

Los Alamos Under Renewed Environmental Scrutiny

Martinez sent lab officials a letter asking that they reprioritize their cleanup plans, which are laid out in a consent order with the state requiring remediation of 90 percent of toxic waste on lab property by 2015 at a cost of some $2 billion.

That consent order covers 33 underground canals of radioactive waste below the barrels, but not the barrels, which are awaiting transfer to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project in southern New Mexico. A record 170 shipments of the legacy waste from the nation's premier nuclear weapons facility were taken to WIPP in the fiscal year that just ended, but the equivalent of some 40,000 barrels remain.

Fake questions on N-energy / Report finds 7 cases of events staged to promote nuclear power

A panel has confirmed seven instances of the government arranging to have people attending symposiums on nuclear energy ask questions that favor nuclear power generation.

In its final report released Friday, a third-party committee set up to investigate such questions said it had newly discovered four more cases, bringing the total to seven.

The committee, created under the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, investigated allegations that the ministry and the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) had asked electric power companies to arrange pro-nuclear energy questions during government-organized symposiums.

Sixteen tons and what you get is a nuclear catastrophe. The explosions that rocked the Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant were more powerful than the combustion of hydrogen gas, as claimed by the Tokyo Electric Power Company. The actual cause of the blasts, according to intelligence sources in Washington, was nuclear fission of. warhead cores illegally taken from America's sole nuclear-weapons assembly facility. Evaporation in the cooling pools used for spent fuel rods led to the detonation of stored weapons-grade plutonium and uranium.

The International Criminal Court has sufficient grounds for taking up a case that involves the health of millions of people in Japan, Canada, the United States, Russia, the Koreas, Mongolia, China and possibly the entire Northern Hemisphere. The Fukushima disaster is more than an human-rights charge against a petty dictator, it is a crime against humanity on par with the indictments at the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals. Failure to prosecute is complicity.

(snip)

- I have long suspected weapons-grade was at the site. I thought it was being manufactured there and stored there.

The furtive actions and secrecy by Tepco and the Japanese gov't at the beginning of the crisis and since has always tended to predict a possibility of this sort of revelation.

They acted like they had something to hide by restricting access to the site and information about the processes therein.

The employing of Stuxnet is almost a given considering the excuse Tepco gave for the valves. I didn't believe their explanation at the time. Stuxnet is a plausible reason.

I am curious whether MSM will pick up on this. Needs more validation.

Diapers from Japan’s mafia

The yakuza stepped in quickly to provide tsunami relief, and are reaping the benefits

Whether it’s about removing tonnes of debris from flattened coastal villages or erecting new homes and office buildings, the yakuza, Japan’s entrenched mafia, is reportedly winning lucrative contracts for all sorts of public projects in the aftermath of the March earthquake and tsunami.

Hours after the first shock waves, unlabelled trucks loaded with “paper diapers, instant ramen, batteries, flashlights, drinks” and other essentials arrived in the hard-hit Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures, according to Jake Adelstein, a Japan-based journalist and a leading expert on the country’s criminal underworld. Unloading the vehicles were men wearing long sleeves and gloves to conceal tattoos and missing fingers, the classic trademarks of yakuza members.

Few quake victims, including local politicians, failed to notice that crime syndicates reached out faster than Tokyo officials. Now, it seems, Japan’s godfathers are getting their payback.
