Not wanting to sound like one of the "uncle" threads but...my nephew is in the navy and works in aviation electronics. They are changing the birds to scan for more nuclear type stuff and to have the ability to scan farther under ground. He can't say what and all but I do know only 4 people in the navy do what he does. I hope they will be putting it to good use.

I realize they were told nothing... but they sacrificed themselves to save many others. Enveloped by pestilence, silent, creeping death.... thousands of roentengens. Heroes.

TEPCO understood this important nuance to achieving “cold shutdown” early on this year when it developed its initial recovery plans and developed a new term, “cold shutdown condition,” which applies to how they are bringing the reactors to stable condition. Their definition is as follows:

Temperature of RPV bottom is, in general, below 100 degrees Celsius.
Release of radioactive materials from PCV is under control and public radiation exposure by additional release is being significantly held down. (Not exceed 1 mSv/y at the site boundary as a target.)
By their definition, the Fukushima Daiichi reactors will reach “cold shutdown condition” once they are below boiling point and are no longer releasing significant amounts of radiation into the atmosphere.

This new definition, thus, has an important distinction between the more commonly used “cold shutdown,” which typically takes place at a nuclear plant under normal conditions.

"They held up Geiger counters showing the level of radiation was almost beyond calculation," said Shiraishi, a former network TV journalist who co-founded the Internet venture in 2001, hosts the show and reports many of its stories. "People tell us that they're now just learning that what the government has been telling them all along might just be a fairy tale."

Official survey: Fukushima impact on general health “extremely small”

The survey was carried out by the Fukushima Prefecture local government in the towns of Namie, Iitate and part of Kawamata and it measured the cumulative external radiation exposure on residents.

In other words, the survey measured the radiation exposure to the skin, and did not look at the so-called internal exposure, or radiation taken into human body from contaminated food, air or water.

The result shows that the accident's "impact on the health of the general public is extremely small," according to senior nuclear adviser Shunichi Yamashita, vice president of Fukushima Medical University.

NUCLEAR CRISIS--9 MONTHS ON / Focus on radiation screenings ended up claiming patients' lives


The Nuclear Safety Commission was in disarray over the screening.

On March 14, the Fukushima prefectural government raised the standard for designating people requiring full-body decontamination from 13,000 counts per minute (cpm) or more, which was based on its radiation emergency medicine manual, to 100,000 cpm or more. The cpm refers to the number of atoms in a given quantity of radioactive material to decay in one minute.

There were fears that, under the original standard, there would be too many people requiring full-body decontamination, preventing smooth evacuation due to staff shortage.

Also, water necessary for decontamination was in short supply due to suspension of water services.

"Decontamination was difficult in the situation. It was irrational to apply the normal standard to an emergency situation," said Hiroshima University Prof. Koichi Tanigawa, who suggested the prefecture raise the standard.

However, the NSC's Technical Advisory Organization, an emergency panel convened by the commission in a nuclear emergency, announced the same day the previous standard was appropriate.

This resulted in double standards between the central and prefectural governments. There were fears evacuees from Fukushima Prefecture would have been denied entry to evacuation centers in other prefectures, where the standard for full-body decontamination was lower than Fukushima Prefecture.

However, in a sudden reversal, the advisory organization on March 19 approved the increase of the standard to 100,000 cpm.

"To evacuate people to areas outside of the prefecture smoother, the standards should be unified," a panel source said.

"It took us time to understand the situation in the prefecture," NSC Chairman Haruki Madarame, explained.

It was not until April 17, more than one month after the March 11 disaster, when advisory panel investigators visited Fukushima Prefecture for the first time.

Japan PM Yoshihiko Noda's visit to push stalled n-deal talks

Nuclear negotiations with India, which has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, have been a sensitive political subject in Japan, the only country that has been targeted by nuclear weapons.

The growing strategic proximity between New Delhi and Tokyo, as evidenced by the India-US-Japan trilateral dialogue which will be held in Washington next week, and the desire of Japan, whose economy is not doing too well, to expand trade and investment with India could also prod Tokyo to step up nuclear negotiations with New Delhi to get a share of the $150 billion nuclear market.

A nuclear deal with Japan is necessary for
India to implement the India-US nuclear deal as leading American nuclear companies like GE and Westinghouse are partly owned by Japanese companies.

The two sides have exchanged draft texts of a bilateral nuclear pact and are making progress on bridging differences, said the sources.

Former nuclear industry insider speaks out on lessons and disillusionment

How ironic is it that this former nuclear energy advocate has lost both his current life and future life plans to nuclear energy?


It's easy to say with hindsight on one's side, but even a layperson could've imagined the possibility of nuclear plants being damaged by major quakes and tsunami in a quake-prone country like Japan with long coastlines. So why couldn't the experts?

"You know why?" Kitamura began, taking another breath before continuing. "It's because experts reached conclusions based merely on statistics that 'in Japan, the country with the world's best record of non-interrupted power supply, it would be very difficult to imagine having no power supply for long periods of time,' and refused to entertain other possibilities. They did not go to the scene to check for themselves whether power could actually be restored. Therein lies the major problem."

N-plant procedure ignored? / Workers 'didn't check' reactor pressure day before explosion

A government panel has found that workers at the No. 3 reactor of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant stopped operation of a high-pressure core cooling system without checking if a substitute pumping system would work on March 13, one day before a hydrogen explosion occurred there, sources said.

By failing to check if the reactor's fire pump could inject water instead of the emergency cooling device, the workers may have failed to follow instructions in the plant's operating manual, according to the panel established to investigate and verify the facts of the nuclear crisis.

After stopping the operation of the high-pressure core cooling system in the early hours of March 13, the workers could not inject water through the fire pump because of the high pressure in the reactor.

As a result, water injection into the reactor was suspended for about 6-1/2 hours before a hydrogen explosion occurred just after 11 a.m. the following day.

Whale hunts matter more than saving people

Want to know why Japan’s earthquake recovery efforts are moving in slow motion? Ask the whales.

Tokyoites have grown accustomed to shocking news items since the earth shook and the oceans rose: the nuclear meltdown has proven far worse than the government admitted; radioactive cesium made its way into baby food; more leaks were found in the damaged Fukushima reactor; warnings by seismologists still go unheeded.

Yet the tale of the whales and the $30 million is what proved most disturbing ― and shed fresh light on why Japan is either unable or unwilling to undertake the broad reforms needed to avert credit-rating downgrades and reverse deepening deflation.

Japan spent about 2.28 billion yen on whaling hunting expeditions from funds allocated for recovery from the earthquake and tsunami. It’s a drop in the proverbial bucket, given that the government plans to spend at least $300 billion rebuilding the Tohoku region. It’s a highly telling expenditure, though, with significance far beyond the price tag.

- the spent fuel pool WAS there before any of the crisis
- the spent fuel pool no longer exists, and therefor, any mention of it being there is a grand lie

More than 240,000 tonnes of intensely radioactive civilian waste has piled up around the globe since the dawning of the atomic age.

Sixty years on, no one is sure yet how to safely and permanently dispose of the stuff, much of it harmful to living organisms for thousands of years.

Canada's share of the high-level heap stands at 44,000 tonnes. Virtually all is spent uranium fuel bundles — 2.3 million of them — that powered the commercial and research reactors that made Canada a leading nuclear nation.

Seems to be a high-intensity worklight. Why it is there, IDK. To obscure a view of something, maybe. Or could be incidental to the cleanup.

relax.. i like the doom part.. they have installed a split level dusk cover in and "over the cam, that is actually bi-polexed... therefore if after dark (funny enough)... any "light events" will "fractuate" with the lens flaring...

also.. as such it will remain debatable if anything :Steam like".. "release like".. could be accountable to many atmospheric anomolies (in their own words).. left again to make our own minds up....

point to ponder, is that they have placed "cam shield" over number 1, and yet follow fuku cam, of an evening with recriticality.. the cam goes down...
