No radiation standards set for gravel shipments
Japan's industry ministry says it has set no radiation standards for gravel shipments from areas affected by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The industry ministry is cooperating with the land ministry and local governments to find out if gravel from the quarry was used to build other structures.

The industry ministry also says it will make inquiries to other quarries in the prefecture to find out where their gravel was shipped.

Nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono has pledged to enhance the international effort to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
Hosono spoke to reporters on Saturday after he visited Japan Atomic Energy Agency facilities in Tokai Village in Ibaraki Prefecture.

At one of the facilities he visited, researchers analyze tiny samples collected during international inspections to check if the materials are only being used for peaceful purposes.

Irradiated gravel used for Fukushima condominium
Officials in Fukushima Prefecture say they have detected high levels of radiation in a new building. They say a construction material may have been tainted with radioactive substances from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The city found that the radioactive cesium level on the first floor was 1.24 microsieverts per hour, which is higher than outside.

This indicates the plants “remain a significant source of contamination to the coastal waters off Japan,” they report. “There is currently no data that allow us to distinguish between several possible sources of continued releases, but these most likely include some combination of direct releases from the reactors or storage tanks, or indirect releases from groundwater beneath the reactors or coastal sediments, both of which are likely contaminated from the period of maximum releases.”

Rally held against oldest nuclear plant in France
A demonstration was held on Sunday near France's oldest nuclear power plant, demanding the immediate shutdown of the facility.

About 300 people gathered for the rally in the eastern French town of Fessenheim near the German and Swiss borders. Some of the activists were from Germany and Switzerland.

The plant started operation 34 years ago.

Japan, Ukraine to cooperate on nuclear accidents
Japan is aiming to conclude a bilateral agreement with Ukraine to cooperate on nuclear accidents.

The Japanese government hopes to share information about nuclear accidents with the former Soviet Republic, which experienced the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

Shareholders to sue TEPCO executives
Tokyo Electric Power Company shareholders will be suing the utility's current and former executives over the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

Last November, 42 shareholders demanded the company's auditors file a lawsuit against 60 people who held executive posts.

They requested over 5.5 trillion yen, or about 71 billion dollars, in compensation.

But on Monday, TEPCO notified the shareholders in writing that it will not take legal action against them. The utility stated that the size of the March 11th tsunami was unforeseeable. It said because of this, the executives cannot be held responsible for the nuclear disaster.

TEPCO submits results of first stress test
Tokyo Electric Power Company has submitted to the government the results of stress tests on 2 nuclear reactors along the Japan Sea coast.

TEPCO handed over to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency on Monday test results of the No.1 and No.7 reactors at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture.

It says the tests show that the facilities are capable of surviving an earthquake 1.3 times the strength the plant was designed to withstand. It also says it could endure a tsunami of up to 15 meters - nearly five times that of the safety standard set by the company.

This is the first time TEPCO has filed its test results.
