i love this random quote:

at2at Said:

I honestly don’t know why governments install nuclear power plants and not energy providing wave machines or more windmills? they’re so much safer!

Windmills+big earthquake= OMG the some windmills fell over!!!
Wave machines+tsunami= OMG big wave creates huge amount of energy!!
wave machine+ earthquake= well..well..the machine broke….meh.
Nuclear power plant+earthquake= We’re fucked!! death toll= maybe “insert big death toll here”

Another reactor to be shut down for inspection
The operator of a nuclear power plant in Shimane Prefecture, western Japan, says it will shut down another reactor for regular inspections. The decision means that 51 of Japan's 54 reactors - 94 percent - will be offline.
The Chugoku Electric Power Company says it will begin Thursday evening shutting down reactor-2 of its Shimane power plant. The work is scheduled to be completed early Friday morning.

The plant's only other reactor is already offline for regular checkups. With the addition of the ongoing shutdown, all the nuclear power plants run by the company will be suspended.

IAEA inspects safety drill at Ohi nuclear plant
A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency has observed a safety drill at the Ohi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture, along the Sea of Japan coast.

The 10-member IAEA team is trying to judge the effectiveness of safety measures at Kansai Electric Power Company. The firm carried out stress tests with the aim of restarting 2 of the plant's reactors.

Team leader James Lyons said before the Thursday's inspection that they will check the steps taken by the plant operator.

26 municipalities demand compensation from TEPCO
Twenty-six municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture are demanding compensation from the Tokyo Electric Power Company for emotional distress over the nuclear disaster at the utility's Fukushima Daiichi plant.

About 70 mayors and local assembly chairpersons representing the municipalities in Fukushima's Aizu and southern districts met the firm's President Toshio Nishizawa at its head office in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Thyroid testing
(snip)

At the expert commission, the result of the thyroid test was reported. The test was done on the children below the age of 18 in Namie-machi, Iitate-mura, and Yamakiya District of Kawamata-machi [all planned evacuation zone]. Of 3765 children, there was no one who was deemed necessary to immediately go through further testing.

26 children (0.7%) have been found with lumps with 5.1 millimeters or larger in diameter, and will go through further testing [at some time]. However, Shunichi Yamashita, the head of the commission and the vice president of Fukushima Medical University explains, "There is no malignant change due to the nuclear plant accident". Of 3739 children who will not need further testing (99.3% of children tested), 1117 children (29.7%) have been found with lumps 5.0 millimeters or less in diameter. But the prefectural government has decided they are "benign".

~

They are undoubtably lying. This is not common in under 20yr olds. Not one of 1117 kids needed further testing? Yeah, right.

Did they perform biopsies on these lumps from 1117 children to determine malignancy? The Jgov decided they are benign. That's just great.

This post is part of an on-going series originally posted at DailyKos and republished by Enformable with permission of the author. Through the series the author highlights and comments on FOIA documents released by the NRC in response to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster.

(snip)

How nice. Too bad our NRC – if not any other Member States and parties to the Convention – had already figured out that neither NISA nor TEPCO could be trusted to tell anything close to the truth about conditions at Fukushima Daiichi. Given the IAEA DG’s background, many in the NRC would have been wise not to trust him or his organization either. Once the nukes start keeping nasty secrets from each other as well as the public, things have gone well over the “reasonable” line per all things nuclear.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a must read series for anyone who wants to know the truth about how this crisis was handled and is being handled still.
The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster – One Year
[link to www.pej.org]
(snip)
“This is the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Routine reporting of elevated
radiation levels was suspended in the early days of the crisis,” says Dr. Tim Takaro, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University.
“Although information about Fukushima is largely absent from our news media,
suggesting that the danger is over, we know that efforts to contain the four troubled
reactors – at least three of which sustained explosions - continues. Without reliable data
regarding the amount of radiation released into seawater and the atmosphere, and the
resulting concentrations in our food chain, we are ill-equipped to predict the longterm
consequences.”
Fukushima decontamination plan worked out
Japan's Environment Ministry has compiled a 2-year plan to complete decontamination of some evacuation zones around the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
The ministry said on Thursday that the plan is part of an effort to allow evacuees to soon return home from the government's exclusion zone and another mandatory evacuation zone covering 11 municipalities.
A deadline of March 2014 is set for areas with radiation levels up to 50 millisieverts a year.
Bill Gates: Next-generation reactors are needed
Former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has expressed his willingness to actively invest in next-generation compact nuclear reactors that are designed to be safer and more efficient.
The billionaire, who invests in various fields, spoke to NHK on Thursday in Davos, Switzerland. He is among the economic and political world leaders attending the annual meeting.
Gates stressed the need for nuclear power to combat global warming. He pointed out that conventional reactors lack the ability to completely prevent radioactive substances from leaking in the event of an accident.
Fukushima mayors frustrated with slow compensation
Mayors in Fukushima Prefecture are voicing frustration over the slow pace of compensation payments for the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
Twelve mayors on Friday met with a government panel drafting compensation guidelines.
The mayors' municipalities are designated as evacuation zones due to high levels of radiation from the plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company.
Okuma Town Mayor Toshitsuna Watanabe asked the panel to quickly finalize the guidelines so that evacuees who cannot return home for many years can start new lives.
