The agency's system uses long-period tremors to determine whether a quake has a magnitude of 8 or higher within 3 minutes. The system monitors long-period ground motion lasting from 100 to 500 seconds, which is specific to massive quakes. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

Further, some coastal areas might have less favorable dilution or sedimentation characteristics than those observed so far. Finally, the possible presence of other persistent radioactive substances, such as strontium-90 or plutonium, has not been sufficiently studied. Recent measurements show persistent contamination of some marine species (mostly fish) caught along the coast of Fukushima district. Organisms that filter water and fish at the top of the food chain are, over time, the most sensitive to caesium pollution. It is thus justified to maintain surveillance of marine life that is fished in the coastal waters off Fukushima. ~ Worth noting that they won't let anyone within 30k of the coast to monitor... ~ b |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 10410912 Sweden 02/12/2012 01:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nuclear accident scenario kept under wraps A document submitted to the government 2 weeks after the Fukushima nuclear accident suggested that the Tokyo metropolitan area might have to be evacuated. But the government failed to acknowledge the existence of the document until the end of last year. The Atomic Energy Commission report was compiled at the request of Naoto Kan, who was Prime Minister at the time. The commission's chief, Shunsuke Kondo, said the document explains possible contingencies following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident as well as preventive measures. The report said massive amounts of radioactive materials could be dispersed from the plant if containment vessels were damaged or used fuel was exposed to the air if water injection failed. Anonymous Coward User ID: 9441965 Australia 02/13/2012 12:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ive been watching this closely enough to see that a week ago the temp had increased around 20 degrees in a week, so I was thinking we have less then that to reach boiling point again. All of a sudden the temp has jumped from 78 to 91 in less then a day. Im thinking things are about to rapidly digress. Ive said it all along that the worst of all this has yet to come. Good ol arnie was trying to say nicely yonks ago that the most radioactive shit was released back in the first week and that the "covers" they were building would "help" to contain further releases. I couldnt help but think, that that was "wishful thinking" at the time. Ive known in my heart that things would get worse. I watched a really good vid the other day showing, for the first time for me, the clearest view yet of a "steam event" at fukushima. Total "fogout" of the entire site!! I recall seeing this and thinking, Fuck!!, all that radiation being released, is this what happens during the day too?? has this been happening all along? If so we are all in BIG trouble. The temp going up says to me this, I have read that the "corium" the melted fuel, in a bunch togeather, constantly emitts radiation, (ok got that) and that for the FIRST 250 000 years this amount of radiation INCREASES!!!!! Now I have also read that while "we know" what happens with melted fuel, at least since chernobyl, what we DONT know is how the corium behaves when we are talking a massive amount, ie; the entire inventory of a reactor!! Its when we put it all togeather, what we DO know, that the whole ball game keeps on getting bigger!! We know that water is "ok" to use as a coolant, but we also know that "steam" is not good. So we are rweaching the point where the "water" we are putting on, is turning to steam, and in turn, the temp is rising? What does this mean?, the bigger picture that is? What happens now? Im thinking further meltdown, reheating, recriticality, and all these things. All I can see happening now, is the "steam geyser" snenario put forward yonks ago. I see this as the next thing. If this temp keeps on going up? What the hell happens? I know that corium "produces" and releases "dust" I know we are talking a fuck load of corium that is beyond our current experience. Its like one of those old movies where worried people are waiting outside the surgery for news and a surgeon comes out, taking of his mask, and says "we have done all we can do, all we can do now is wait, and pray" This seems to me about all we CAN do. Wait, knowing that every second that goes by is another second packed full of nuclear releases, all the while tepco comes out with ridiculous statements that make no sense. Waterbug, is there any way we can build some kind of a "picture" some kind of "technological map", a roadmap of sorts, that tells us what "SHOULD" happen, given the circumstances???? If you know what I mean. Im trying to say, what happens if this temp goes over say 100, and stays there? What happens then? Will they still be able to keep "putting" on water etc? Is it possible for further explosions? This is what I mean, what is the next step? do we know? do they know? what "would" be the plan if say this was in america at this point in time? Just what the hell do they do next? Because the way Im looking at it, the next step will be the EXTRACTION of "staff" "temporarily". You know, like it was at the start, just wandering around scatching their heads. Remember at the start when the "heat" was too much and they were worried about steam explosions etc, then arnie came out and said months later "its been too long, and the decay heat is much much less" which calmed me down for a bit. But now we are back up to where we were last fucking year? We are really right back to where we were as if we hadnt even started putting water or anything else on? For the next 26,000,000 fucking years? And what the fuck is going on with number two??? And yep, I mean number 2 DAIINI the "other" nuclear facility that is currently under "state of cold shutdown" ????? We fucking KNOW that the shit hit the fan there, but we arent being told a damn thing. Not even Arnie has raised this issue. Which I think he should, it might help to get more info out. I guess this slow news is pissing me off. Tiny little "tweets" that tell us something but nothing at the same time. Tepco "releases" some "news" and almost immiediatly a tepco (sub-sub-sub-contracted) worker tells us somthing almost complete opposite? I guess im ranting today, Im sick of it allready, I wish it would hurry itself up and blow or something. Im trying to think of what happens if it just keeps on heating up? will it just sit there simmering between recriticality or what the heck? What the fuck happens now? PS (sorry for my swearing its monday, and on mondays I have no excuses) |

Friend, I feel exactly the same way. I wish I knew. I will say that I don't think for a minute that we are being given the whole truth, by anyone, including AG. Almost one year on and we're only just being told that fuku 2 was also close to meltdown and it may not even be the whole truth about that(Daiini). There is so much disinfo out there it is hard to get to any semblance of truth. Just gotta keep scratching at it like a scab and hope to get some blood flowing eventually. Fuckkity- fuk and hell-fire. I keep going back to the fact that corium exists and the state of it is unknown. The Japs are pissing on a forest fire. Water doesn't do a thing to corium. You don't cool it, you cool the surrounding environment. If it isn't a malfunctioning thermometer as they say, it is possible that the recent changes in the way they are cooling has caused a change in the state of the corium itself, possibly creating a crack in the shell encasing it causing more heat to escape. Or causing it to migrate and evolve. Guess I'll take a little trip to the tech forums to see if I can glean anything from the eggheads... Cheers and beers. ~ bug |
