I wonder how it will be 're-phrased'?

This is a blatant admission of safety issues related to the age and deterioration of these reactors and systems. The Mark I pressure vessel[fuku] has a design lifespan of 40 years. Metal fatigue from neutron bombardment was one of the factors incorporated when that age limit was scientifically determined. Unless the metal is replaced, eventually it will lose it's integrity. No upgrade or political decision is going to change that fact.

I'll have to do some looking to learn more about San Onofre and their systems.

They just don't get that everything has a "design life". You don't see too many cars from the 70's as daily drivers. Nuke plants are operating well beyond "designed life". I think the biggest reason is they have no idea what else to do with them or the spent fuel so they have to just keep patching them and hope for the best.

"It's no secret that the Rocky Flats site is still contaminated with highly toxic radioactive materials like plutonium and americium," says LeRoy Moore of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center about the letter, which was sent earlier this morning. "Some of us are concerned that constructing a highway at Rocky Flats would endanger people's health. We decided to send a letter urging officials of the cities most affected to get EPA and CDPHE to do needed air sampling so we can all better understand conditions out there."

Scriba, NY -- Repairs are ongoing on the leaking valve at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 1.

Jill Lyon, spokeswoman for the plant owned by Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, said the plant was shut down Sunday due to a leaking valve. She said operators will restart the plant only when they repair work and post maintenance testing have been completed.

US nuclear utilities agree to add portable emergency equipment

The agreement requires all nuclear plants to acquire portable emergency equipment, including diesel-driven pumps, electric generators, ventilation fans, hoses, fittings and communications gear, NEI said. The exact equipment that will be needed by each plant is site-specific, NEI said.

The industry has agreed that every plant will place an order or enter into a contract for the needed equipment by March 31, NEI said. There is no set deadline for when the equipment must be in place, NEI spokesman Steve Kerekes said in an email.

US was worried about cooling of spent fuel pools
Newly released minutes from a US nuclear commission show a US regulator had concerns about the cooling of spent fuel pools at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant one day after the accident took place on March 11th.

Documents from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission show the agency chairman received a report from a senior official one day after the accident on the condition of the building that houses the No. 1 reactor. The report said that the reinforced frames of the building that holds a spent fuel pool were exposed after a hydrogen explosion damaged the building.

Japan to release record of nuke crisis responses
Japan's top government spokesman says they will compile the minutes of the meetings held by the country's leadership just after the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima plant last March. The minutes will be released by the end of this month.

The beach at Sandside is around 3km west of the redundant nuclear site.

Meanwhile, work is due to resume in May to clear particles from the seabed near the site.

More than 1800 have been recovered so far from the seabed where there is evidence of a "plume" from historic effluent discharges dating back 50 years.

US nuke regulator releases March 11 transcripts
Newly released transcripts of the US nuclear regulator show it contemplated an evacuation advisory for US citizens near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant soon after the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.

The regulator's thinking was based on a worst-case scenario of meltdowns at all 3 operating reactors after they sustained heavy damage in the disaster.

On Tuesday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission released more than 3,000 pages of transcripts, covering in-house conferences over 10 days from March 11th last year, when the massive quake hit northeastern Japan.

DPJ seriously blundered by not recording meetings

The headquarters has discussed and made decisions on such important issues as measures to prevent the crisis from spreading and it selected areas people were told to evacuate from.

It was discovered in May that no minutes of its meetings existed. Then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano explained that the government was extremely busy dealing with the crisis, and he promised the situation would be rectified. However, the issue remains unresolved.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said the government would prepare minutes of the headquarters' meetings based on memos. The government also should thoroughly investigate why the minutes were not kept.

Equally serious is that minutes may not have been kept for meetings of the government's emergency disaster countermeasures headquarters for the Great East Japan Earthquake and meetings on electricity supply and demand.

The failure to keep the minutes of important meetings is a problem that stems from the nature of the DPJ-led government, specifically its misguided "lawmaker-led politics" principle and the view that bureaucrats are inherently evil.

OPPD Chief: ‘We Lost Our Edge’ at Fort Calhoun

Under intense criticism OPPD’s man in charge of the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant said today that the utility has no timetable for restarting the plant and admitted “we lost our edge” when it comes to running the reactor.

PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION: Too little, too late?

“The Town of Duxbury, Massachusetts, opposes continued operation of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS) until all safety improvements recommended by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as a result of lessons learned from the failures of similarly designed reactors in Fukushima, Japan, have been fully implemented; and requests the NRC to immediately suspend all further action on the application of the Entergy Corporation for renewal of its license to operate PNPS until such full implementation has been accomplished.

“The Clerk of Duxbury shall forward the text of this article to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the town of Duxbury’s state and federal delegations, the select boards within the Emergency Planning Zone of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station and Entergy Corp., so that the intent of the citizens of Duxbury is widely known.”

I'm noticing the beginnings of a grass-roots movement, not organized demonstrations, per se, but local residents objecting to the status quo. People are waking up, especially in light of the first new reactors in a long time being built and the continuing situation at fuku. I hope it gains momentum until the issues of the old reactor vessels and out-dated systems technology are addressed completely.

Cruise finds Fukushima pollution

The cruise carried researchers from the US, UK, France, Spain and Japan. Conducted just three months after the Fukushima crisis began, it was intended as an "independent check" on Japanese government-funded research and the information released by Tepco, the owners of the beleaguered Daiichi plant in Fukushima.

The researchers have some qualifications about their own research, the most significant of which is that they were not permitted any closer than 30km to the coast, where higher levels of radioactivity would have been observable.

It is clear also, 11 months on from the accident, that Fukushima-originated radioactivity levels in the seawater are not declining as fast as many scientists would have hoped.

"The reactor site still seems to be leaking; it hasn't shut off completely, and at those levels right on the coast you could still have these concentration factors that we measured that would indicate some organisms would be at levels unfit for human consumption," Dr Buesseler said.
