Radioactive steel scrap contaminates furnace of Outokumpu Tornio
[link to www.steelguru.com]

[snip]

But 4 meltshop employees were exposed to radiation as they entered the melting furnace during maintenance work.

Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority STUK informed about the incident “Preliminary measurements made by Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority indicate that one of the employees was potentially exposed to a dose of approximately ten millisieverts of radiation. The dose was limited and does not pose adverse health effects to the employee. According to the seven step International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), such a dose is a level 2 incident meaning that it is a material safety risk event. The first measurements of the three other employees observed no abnormal radioactivity. This incident didn't pose any hazard to employees outside the meltshop furnace area.”

New aerial view of Fukushima plant
An NHK helicopter has flown near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for the first time since the accident last March.

The footage shows reactor buildings with their structures exposed by hydrogen explosions.

No one can be seen in the towns in the no-entry zones around the plant.

The land ministry scaled back the no-fly zone on Saturday from a 20-kilometer radius to 3 kilometers. It calculated that the aerial radioactive readings around the plant had dropped to a safe level.

NHK's helicopter flew around 4 kilometers from the plant at an altitude of some 700 meters on Sunday for the first time since the accident.

Evacuate Tokyo and All US Forces From Japan

--Snip--
This is a tragedy of huge proportions. There are 30 Plus Million People in Greater Tokyo. It is brought home personally to each person who sees the work of Fukushima Diary by Mochizuki.

There are thousands of US troops stationed with their families in Japan. American politicians must remove all US Troops and dependents from Japan immediately. This must happen forthwith. We will remember.

I cannot link the source for this. It is a magazine for military veterans.

Elevated mercury found in fish in Poplar Creek, Clinch River
[link to www.knoxnews.com]

[snip]

Sampling by Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientists and environmental staff has documented the elevated presence of mercury in fish in Poplar Creek — downstream of the point where East Fork enters it — and into the Clinch River and the upper part of Watts Bar Reservoir.

As reported in last year's News Sentinel series, "Mercury's Menace: Y-12's Cold War Legacy," fish throughout East Fork exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's mercury guideline of 0.3 parts per million in fish flesh. Enormous quantities of mercury were used at Y-12 during Cold War production of thermonuclear weapons — so-called hydrogen bombs — and tons of the toxic metal were released into the creek via spills or wastewater discharges.
Even though mercury discharges at Y-12 have declined in recent years, the mercury concentrations in fish have not. In fact, in the lower stretches of East Fork, mercury levels in fish have actually increased despite an overall cleaner environment.

That same puzzling and disturbing trend has also been documented in the section of Poplar Creek that's downstream of the mouth of East Fork.

For once, a regulator who isn’t a toadie
[link to bostonglobe.com]

[snip]

JOHN E. SUNUNU slams Gregory B. Jaczko, chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, for standing up to the nuclear industry. I for one am happy that the NRC chairman is not a nuclear industry toadie. There is a need for balance on a commission that has long been a revolving door for industry executives.

Jaczko’s concerns are also germane to Bostonians because Fukushima has the same outmoded plant design as the Pilgrim plant in Plymouth.

The CCNI will fund research and development projects and oversee the nuclear facilities on the University of Saskatchewan campus such as the cyclotron.

Research at the centre will focus on nuclear medicine, material science, safety and small reactor technology. The CCNI expects to issue a call for proposals in spring 2012. Local researchers can partner with outside industry, academics, and governments to submit project proposals, which will then be peer-reviewed and evaluated.

(2nd LD) N. Korea says it is ready for both dialogue and war
[link to english.yonhapnews.co.kr]

[snip]

South Korea and the U.S. regularly hold military exercises to bolster their readiness against a possible North Korean invasion. Seoul and Washington say the exercises are defensive in nature.

However, the North, which has a track record of military provocations against South Korea, routinely condemns the military drills in the South as precursors for an invasion.

"The big exercises for aggression against the (North) are escalating the tensions in and around the Korean Peninsula beyond a danger line," the North's Foreign Ministry said in an English-language statement carried by the country's official Korean Central News Agency.

N.Korea may suspend uranium enrichment for food
North Korea has informed the United States that it is ready to suspend its uranium enrichment program in exchange for food aid. This would include grains from the United States.

Diplomatic sources linked to the 6-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program told this to NHK.

North Korea revealed its intention during bilateral talks with the US last week in the Chinese capital of Beijing. They were the first high-level talks since the death of the country's former leader, Kim Jong Il, in December.

Independent panel: Tokyo evacuation considered
A report by an independent panel shows that some cabinet members were bracing for the possible evacuation of Tokyo after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The 6-member panel of experts is due to issue a report on Tuesday based on interviews with 300 Japanese and US government officials and others about their responses to the accident on March 11th of last year.

The report says the chief of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant informed the government 3 days after the accident that the nuclear fuel rods could melt down because of cooling system failures.

More nuclear response hospitals needed
Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission says hospitals outside of evacuation zones must be designated as emergency treatment facilities for people exposed to radiation after possible nuclear accidents.

The commission made the recommendation after 5 hospitals near the Fukushima Daiichi power plant failed to function properly in the wake of the nuclear accident in March last year.

Their proximity to the plant was part of the problem.

Former US NRC head gives views before Diet panel
A former US nuclear regulatory chief says responsibility and power to decide how to respond to an emergency situation at a nuclear reactor should be left to onsite experts.

Former US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Richard Meserve spoke on Monday at a meeting of Japan's parliamentary panel investigating the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.

Meserve said it's important for a nuclear regulatory organization to be free from political intervention and independent of a power company.
