Panel issues report on Fukushima nuclear accident
An independent panel investigating the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has issued a report based on interviews with about 300 people, including Japanese and US government officials and nuclear experts.

It has pointed out that the government and the plant's operator were ill-prepared to deal with a crisis.

The 6-member panel of experts from the private sector has been studying how the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company responded to the nuclear accident in March last year. The power company's officials refused to be interviewed.

The report released on Tuesday criticizes the government's response as off-the-cuff and too late.

Nuclear accident "off-site" center under review
A Japanese government panel is proposing the setting up of 2 separate centers to help local communities respond to any future nuclear power plant accident.

What is known as the off-site emergency response center failed to function properly when the Fukushima nuclear disaster occurred on March 11th last year.

A rise in levels of radiation and the impact of the tsunami and earthquake prevented officials from local municipalities gathering at the off-site center, about 5 kilometers away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Not blocked as far as I know. It's possible, tho. I have not been kind in my comments regarding Tepco.
No regular posters from Japan. I don't know why, either. They are welcome to. I have tried to be an advocate for the people of Japan, in general. There were quite a few on the 1st fuku thread.
I'm pretty sure they have better things to do. Atom-boy posts occasionally, although we've had some disagreements.

Chai said, "It might have been possible to manually open and close" the valves if assessment of the conditions of the emergency condenser had been possible at an early stage. Panel blasts Kan's response to disaster
An independent panel investigating last March's nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant has criticized former Japanese prime minister Naoto Kan over his response to the disaster.

Panel head Koichi Kitazawa told reporters at the Japan National Press Club on Tuesday that Kan interfered excessively in workers' efforts to bring the plant under control. Kitazawa said such interference included having a say in the size of batteries to be used.

Kitazawa added that Kan failed to disclose information appropriately, leading to widespread public mistrust of the government.

US and N Korea reach agreement on denuclearization
The United States and North Korea have announced that the North has agreed to take steps toward denuclearization.

The 2 countries say a new round of talks will be held shortly to discuss 240,000 tons of US food aid to North Korea.

Cesium in milk found under limit
Major Japanese milk producers say their products have passed the government's safety standards for radioactive cesium.

The government decided to strengthen milk safety standards from April amid consumer concerns about the nuclear accident at the Fukushima power plant.

Under the new standards, milk will be allowed to contain only 50 becquerels of cesium per kilogram, or one quarter the current permissible level.

Futaba town residents file TEPCO damages claim
A group of evacuees from the Fukushima nuclear disaster have filed a compensation claim amounting to more than 5 million dollars with Tokyo Electric Power Company.

Futaba Town Mayor Katsutaka Idogawa and evacuees, representing 47 people from 22 households, visited the government's arbitration body in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Reassessment asked for Hokkaido nuclear plant
The Japanese government will ask Hokkaido Electric Power Company to once more re-assess the safety of a nuclear plant it operates. The re-assessment should include an examination of the possible impact of an earthquake caused by the interrelated movements of underground fault lines.

The Nuclear Industrial and Safety Agency said on Wednesday that the company's safety analysis on the Tomari nuclear power plant was insufficient because it only assessed a group of fault lines lying under the sea 40 kilometers off the plant.

And aissmung that the containment did not work. What would be the worse case scenario ? (Plutonium, Uranium and Cesium do not travel very far and tend to remain localized to where the accident occurred).Here are some bits from experts on the topic:Elmer Lewis: The main concern would be with isolating the soil so that no one was living on it or using farm products from it. Maybe you would remove some of it to an appropriate waste disposal site. Plutonium, uranium and other heavy elements migrate very slowly through soil (i.e. they would stay put).Elmer Lewis: It could be considered the initial stage of a China Syndrome. Conceivably the core structure could collapse, the uranium falls onto the bottom of the pressure vessel and onto the concrete below. Again conceivably it could go into the soil below, but it would not penetrate more deeply than several yards. The main danger would still be the radioactivity released to the atmosphere, not what goes into the ground. It might contaminate drinking water for a small area around the plant.Jim Smith: Radioactive Cs-137 is held in soil for decades (the amount halves every 30 years). It doesn't spread too far tiny amounts are spread by the wind and water. only Estimations!

I am very neutral since a few Month and decided to wait
for a "real Confirmation" of the SFP. Nr.3
and even when it is still there and in a way unharmed
i would never move closer to this Plant than 0.55uSv/h
and Young People or Children should not be above 0.25uSv/h

This Elmer Lewies is not a "unknown"
but maybe he spend to much time in his Books
because all he do is serving a Generalisation!

i have a feeling that things are so bad that they are now letting those fools brave enough to fly in and slowly break the obvious.....

at the same time they release a press statement saying they can't get near number two because it is too radioactive, and slyly release the fact so that they can now talk about the reason why no one is seen working there... on top of that we have the automated cranes working away merrily when the jss cam clearly shows steam and smoke venting between one and two.... oh joy.... merrily fucked up....

US, N.Korea differ on plutonium program
North Korea and the United States differ on several points of their agreement on the North's nuclear moratorium.

The 2 sides announced late Wednesday that North Korea agreed to halt nuclear and long-range missile tests and uranium enrichment in Nyongbyon.

The country says it will also accept inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to monitor the moratorium.

In return, the United States will provide 240,000 tons of nutritional aid to the North.

2 plants to undergo checks for multiple faults
Two Japanese nuclear power plants will undergo fresh inspections after new research suggested they are more vulnerable to seismic activity than thought.

The move follows revelations that active faults could simultaneously shift and trigger bigger earthquakes than the plants are built to withstand.

Research last year showed that the March 11th quake occurred when multiple active faults off the coast of the Pacific Ocean in northern Japan moved simultaneously.
