There shouldn't be any temperature fluctuations if the cooling systems are working properly. Could be damage to the moderators that we're not being told about. This has been going on for awhile, now. We'll find out sooner or later.

Japanese government conducted thyroid exposure measurement in Iwaki, Kawamata, Iidate late March.
The result was that the highest reading was 35 mSv, which turned out to be a lie from this measurement.

The highest exposure from radioiodine overall was 87 millisieverts, while the highest among children under 15 was 47 millisieverts.

The researchers' findings exceed data collected by the government in a similar survey in March 2011.
Among the total of 1,080 children the government surveyed in Iwaki and other Fukushima Prefecture municipalities at the time, the highest estimated doses stood at around 30 millisieverts.

"The central and prefectural governments should conduct follow-up surveys and take other measures to deal with potential health issues," Tokonami stated.

The Hirosaki University team will submit its findings to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and brief the residents.

IAEA to actively support decontamination in Japan
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency says his organization will continue to actively support decontamination efforts in Japan.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano made the comment in an interview with NHK in Vienna on Saturday, ahead of the first anniversary of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

Amano said the accident served as a wake-up call and countries across the world share the view that they have to improve safety features at nuclear power plants.

US nuclear regulator announces new safety measures
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ordered stricter safety measures for nuclear power plants.

The commission on Friday announced major safety changes based on lessons from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The orders require US nuclear plants to upgrade equipment to make it possible to deal with any loss of power. The plants must install instruments to monitor water levels in pools for spent fuel rods.

Core details of nuclear accident not known yet
One year after the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, core details relating to the accident are still not known, including from where a large amount of radioactive material was released.

Following the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, nuclear fuel melted at the No.1, 2, and 3 reactors of the plant. Many people were forced to evacuate because a large amount of radioactive material was released across a wide area. The nuclear accident seriously affected Japan's entire society and economy.

Japan marks 1st anniversary of March 11 disaster
Sunday marks the first anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan.
However, local communities are still working hard to recover from the disaster. Many displaced people are having a hard time finding work and getting back on their feet.

As of Saturday, 15,854 people were officially killed in the disaster and 3,155 others remain missing.

TEPCO chief vows to tackle nuclear accident
The president of Tokyo Electric Power Company has pledged to address the difficult situation created by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Toshio Nishizawa visited the plant on Sunday, the first anniversary of the powerful earthquake and tsunami that triggered the nuclear accident.

Nishizawa and 200 employees observed a minute of silence at 2:46 PM, the exact time the earthquake struck northeastern Japan.

He apologized in a speech for causing serious trouble and worries for local governments and Fukushima residents as well as people across Japan.

Memorial ceremonies held near nuclear plant
Memorial ceremonies for tsunami victims have been held in Okuma Town, which hosts the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and remains a no-entry zone.

Fourteen people came by bus to attend the ceremonies on Sunday, which took place at 2 locations near the nuclear power plant.

The participants wearing protective suits offered a silent prayer and flowers to the spirits of the deceased.

The recent radiation leak at San Onofre Unit 3, and the alarming discovery that 871 of some 9,700 tubes in one of Unit 2’s 2-year-old steam generators are already degraded by 10 percent or more, ominously recall the steam tube problems that originally caused the premature retirement of Unit 1 in 1992 and prompted the $671 million installation of replacement steam generators in Unit 2 and Unit 3 in 2009 and 2010.

The Post also interviewed retired NRC engineer and researcher Joram Hopenfeld, who said the company will have to determine why the tubing is degrading so quickly “before they do anything else. I’ve never heard of anything like that over so short a period of time,” Hopenfeld said, “The safety implications could be very, very severe.”

It's been a year and still no good plan for clean up. I'm amazed that the duct tape and bailing wire has held this thing together, and operation superglue has been the most successful of them all. I guess by the one year anniversary I was hoping to see the best minds in the scientific, engineering, and environmental fields say "We have a plan", or at the least "Hey ~ let's try _____". Still no idea where the fuel is located, tonnes of contaminated water being "temporarily" stored, and no one wants to accept or has a plan for debris.

TEPCO pays nearly 450 bil. yen in compensation
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says the company has paid nearly 450 billion yen, or about 5.4 billion dollars, to people affected by the nuclear crisis.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, said on Sunday that compensation paid by March 9th reached 445.5 billion yen.

But only about 40 percent of individuals who are entitled to apply for compensation have completed the procedures.

Protestors say "No" to nuclear power plants
Around 30,000 protestors came together in France on Sunday to form a human chain to call for an end to nuclear energy.

One year after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, people linked arms for some 230 kilometers along a major road in southeastern France, where many nuclear facilities are located.

Demonstrators from France, Germany and Switzerland also rallied at 10 sites as part of the anti-nuclear power protest set up by an NGO.

Almost 80 percent of France's electricity is generated by nuclear power. The country has 58 reactors, the second-largest number in the world after the United States.

Cyndi Lauper campaigning for Fukushima products
US pop singer Cyndi Lauper has called on people to support Japan's disaster-hit northern region by buying its products.

Lauper made the appeal at a news conference held for foreign media in Tokyo on Monday.

Data on radiation, toxin exposure following quake yet to be released

Environmental assessment teams took hundreds of samples of soil, air and water at disaster-zone work sites, then sent the samples to the U.S. and tested for radiation and a range of toxins, including asbestos, that are known to harm people’s health.

A year after the disaster, the Department of Defense has not released the data, although officials have stated that troops were not exposed to “unsafe” levels of toxins or radiation.

Stars and Stripes has made numerous requests for data from the environmental testing and dosimeters, including a Freedom of Information Act request that was denied. PACOM officials have not given a reason why the information has not been released or give any indication when it would be available.

Army Col. Lance Koenig, commander of the 10th Logistics Group, who had more than 100 troops working in Sendai and Ishinomaki during the relief effort, said several months after the operation that he was eager to get the test results.

“The Army dosimeter didn’t give you a reading,” he said. “You just wore it and turned it in to the medical folks.”

N.Korea says it will soon accept IAEA inspectors
North Korea's chief envoy to the six-party talks on the country's nuclear program says it will soon accept inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

North Korean vice foreign minister Ri Yong Ho spoke to reporters in New York on Monday. He has been in the US city since last Tuesday to attend an international conference.

Ri said North Korea is preparing to implement a bilateral agreement struck between the North and the United States last month.

US: Nebraska nuclear plant fire was serious threat
US nuclear regulators say a fire that knocked out the cooling system for spent fuel at a nuclear plant in Nebraska last year represented a serious safety threat.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a preliminary report on Monday into the fire at the Fort Calhoun plant last June.

The report says the plant operator could have prevented the fire if it had investigated an unusual smell coming from an electric breaker 3 days earlier.

Cesium testing in food up for review
Japan's health ministry is reviewing guidelines for food inspections ahead of the April introduction of tougher content limits on radioactive cesium.

The new safety standard will limit the amount of cesium in rice, vegetables and other general foodstuffs to 100 becquerels per kilogram --- or one-fifth the current limit.

Team: Radiation exposure in Tokyo far below limit
Researchers say Tokyo residents' internal radiation exposure from the nuclear accident in Fukushima is far below government-set safety limits, so the risk to human health is extremely limited.

A team led by University of Tokyo researcher Michio Murakami estimated the amount of radioactive materials people in Tokyo have ingested through drinking water and food since March last year. The team used data compiled by local and central governments.
