Diet investigative panel visits Chernobyl
A diet committee investigating the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident is visiting Chernobyl in the Ukraine.

Members of the panel have been seeing first-hand the on-going activities 26 years after the nuclear accident in the former Soviet republic.

On Friday, four of the committee's 10 members went to the site to observe nuclear waste disposal measures, how the failed reactor was reinforced, and health checks carried out on workers.

Radioactive cesium found in farm goods near Tokyo
Radioactive cesium that exceeds the new standard has been detected in shiitake mushrooms grown outside in a town in Kanagawa Prefecture, west of Tokyo. The town is around 300 kilometers from the disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Since the new standard took effect, radioactive cesium higher than the limit has been found in agricultural products around Tokyo.

Officials in the prefecture say shiitake mushrooms harvested in Manazuru town on Thursday were found to contain 141 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram. The new government limit of 100 becquerels took effect this month.

Ex-premier Murayama expresses regret over acceptance of nuclear power
Former Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama said Sunday it is regrettable that he changed the then Japan Socialist Party's policy to an acceptance of nuclear power stations while he was in office.


''It was imprudent and it was a failure. I want to apologize,'' Murayama told an antinuclear meeting in the city of Oita. ''I'm filled with a strong feeling that I should not accept nuclear power stations so I can make up for my mistake.''

From alpha to gamma rays, uranium mining and the use of glow in the dark materials, the production of materials for industry and above all, nuclear bombs and nuclear power: the amount of radiation we are exposed to today is higher and more frequent than in other eras. And this is causing cancer and birth defects. And one defect rising higher and higher is autism which today has been declared a gene mutation problem.

Operator of Ohi nuclear plant submits safety plan
The operator of 2 nuclear reactors on the Japan Sea coast has submitted a safety action plan to the industry minister as a step toward restarting the reactors.

Kansai Electric Power Company President Makoto Yagi handed the plan to Industry Minister Yukio Edano on Monday.

The government had asked the utility to come up with a timeline for implementing the government's new safety standards as a precondition for restarting the reactors. The 2 reactors at the company's Ohi power plant are currently offline for safety checks.

Govt. urged to set up new nuclear regulator
Japanese municipalities hosting nuclear power stations have urged Nuclear Crisis Minister Goshi Hosono to expedite the planned launch of a new regulating body.

Kazuharu Kawase, the head of an association of such municipalities and the mayor of Tsuruga City, visited Hosono on Monday to make the request.

Kawase told the minister that the government's stress tests, its call for establishing a reactor service life of 40 years, and its new safety standards all lack scientific basis.

Mayor asks govt. support for "temporary towns"
A mayor in Fukushima Prefecture has asked the central government to help his city host the administrative functions of municipalities that have been forced to evacuate by the nuclear accident.

Iwaki Mayor Takao Watanabe made the request to Reconstruction Minister Tatsuo Hirano, who visited the city on Monday.

The request comes in connection with a plan by Okuma Town to move its town office and other public facilities, as well as temporary housing for residents, to Iwaki and elsewhere in Fukushima.

Ohi nuclear plant safety plan analysis
The safety action plan for the Ohi nuclear power plant lists 91 ways to improve safety, but 37 of these are not yet in place.

Kansai Electric Power Company says it plans to complete an earthquake-resistant office building in the fiscal year that starts in April of 2015, one year ahead of schedule.

The utility says that, until then, it will use an assembly room next to the central control room as an emergency-management office.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and three ministers confirmed Monday that two idled reactors at Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Oi nuclear power plant basically meet the government's safety standards for the resumption of operations, industry minister Yukio Edano said.
