AR. Depending where you are, the geology is limestone and shale. You might want to look at this and see what could be in the ground in your area to give you higher background.

Of course, that doesn't have anything to do with what comes down in rain and snow, natch.

PM names lawyer Tokyo Electric's new chairman
The chairmanship of the troubled Tokyo Electric Power Company will be taken over by a lawyer brought in from outside the utility. Kazuhiko Shimokobe will formulate a plan to rescue the utility, which has been limping since last year's Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda asked Shimokobe to take the job. The government had been struggling to fill the post for months.

Shimokobe, who currently chairs the steering committee of a state-backed nuclear compensation fund, said he will do all he can to lead the company with its employees.

TEPCO to draw up renewal plan under new chairman
The government's search for a new head of an ailing utility has finally come to an end. It is set to name a lawyer as the chairman of the Tokyo Electric Power Company, to which it plans to inject more than 10 billion dollars in public funds.

The government has decided to appoint to the post Kazuhiko Shimokobe, a former vice president of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.

After the Fukushima Daiichi accident, Shimokobe was posted as the chair of the government-backed nuclear compensation fund. He has also headed a third-party panel investigating the utility's management and finances.

Survey shows mixed reaction to restarting reactor
An NHK survey indicates that over half of the residents in Ohi town in Fukui Prefecture support the government's plan to restart 2 idle nuclear reactors there, while one-third in neighboring areas support it.

The telephone survey last weekend asked local residents as well as people living in 4 neighboring municipalities about the plan to restart the Ohi plant reactors operated by Kansai Electric Power Company.

In Ohi town, 54 percent of people support the government's plan, while 37 percent oppose the plan.

Support among people living in neighboring towns and cities was much lower, with 32 percent of them saying they support the government plan. 60 percent in the neighboring areas oppose the restart.

Humm, a NHK telephone survey. I suppose just a little over half supporting a nuke plant is about the number they want to see in the data.

I wonder if Tepco did a telephone survey, if they would report the same results. Probably so I think.

Nuclear plants need to be banned from every corner of this planet.

TEPCO chairman-to-be to reshuffle top management
An outsider is poised to take over the chairmanship of Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

On Thursday lawyer Kazuhiko Shimokobe accepted an offer from Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to take the post at the firm, which will receive around 12-point-two-billion dollars in public funds. Shimokobe is currently the head of the steering committee of a state-backed nuclear compensation fund.

No. of operable commercial nuclear reactors in Japan falls to 50
The number of operable commercial nuclear reactors in Japan fell to 50 from 54 on Friday, after four crippled reactors at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi power plant were classified as defunct on Thursday.

The Nos. 1 to 4 reactors at the six-reactor complex in northeastern Japan, which were severely damaged in the nuclear disaster triggered by the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, were scrapped under the Electricity Business Law.

Theoretically, this means that they intend to restart number 5 and 6 sooner or later...

Japan Times:

Snipped within Terms,

'As a nuclear core designer and someone who earned a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in nuclear engineering, I volunteered to look into the situation at Fukushima No. 1 in June of 2011. Mr. Goushi Hosono, minister of nuclear power and environment, personally gave me access to the information and personnel who were directly involved in the containment operations of the postdisaster nuclear plants. After three months of investigation, I analyzed and wrote a long report detailing minute by minute how the nuclear reactors were actually disabled (pr.bbt757.com/eng/)

Here are the highlights of my findings:

1. Three of the six reactors of Fukushima No. 1 had a complete core meltdown a few days after the tsunami hit. The molten fuel penetrated not only through the bottom of the thick pressure vessel, but also poked holes at the bottom of the containment vessel, thus releasing fission materials into the environment. The meltdown itself started at 11p.m. on the day of the tsunami, March 11, 2011.

2. As expected, the meltdown caused the fuel cladding material, zircaloy (zirconium alloy), to react with vapor and to create large quantities of hydrogen and zirconium oxide, which caused the catastrophic hydrogen explosion that blew out three reactor buildings. The hydrogen explosion took place on March 12, 14 and 15. The Japanese Government did not admit to the meltdown until three months later, nor did they admit to the damage to the containment vessels until a half year later. Our government tried to hide this important information for some reason, though judging from the amount of fission material released and from the size of the hydrogen explosion, the meltdown of the entire core was undeniable for anyone who has studied reactor engineering..'
