Epidemiological studies of Fukushima residents exposed to ionising radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant prefecture—a preliminary review of current plans

2.1. Doses and dose rates from external irradiation

The Japanese government and local authorities conducted extensive environmental dosimetry surveys with the help of various domestic and foreign institutions. The data available at the website of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) show that areas located north-west of Fukushima I NPP tend to have relatively high external doses from deposited nuclides (now predominantly from radioisotopes of caesium). In one of these areas outside the 30 km radius zone, an external radiation dose rate as high as 10 µSv h − 1 was recorded even 3 months after the accident. An area in Namie town recorded a cumulative dose in the air of 73.9 mSv during the period between 12 March and 25 May according to a media release from MEXT in early June. Note, however, the radiation doses received by the residents in this area were unlikely to be that high because most of the residents tried to stay indoors in the early days after the accident, and were evacuated by early April.

Radionuclides with long half-lives will play a major role in long-term exposure. Those include Cs-137 and Cs-134, with half-lives of 30 years and 2 years, respectively. In Fukushima city, which is approximately 60 km away from the Fukushima I NPP, the gamma radiation dose rate exceeded 100 µSv h − 1 on 16–17 March, and decreased to 1–2 µSv h − 1 in the next 2–3 weeks (wwwcms.pref.fukushima.jp/). Hosoda et al reported that the dose rate in areas more than 200 km away from the power station had increased by a factor of about 1.5–2.5 on 25 April compared to the levels before 11 March (Hosoda et al 2011). In October 2011, some areas of Fukushima city still had radiation levels higher than 1.0 µSv h − 1.

IRSN, the French National Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety, estimated projected doses due to external exposure from radioactive deposits for exposure durations of 3 months, 1 year and 4 years before evacuation on the basis of the dose assessment carried out by IRSN on the 66th day after the accident (www.irsn.fr/EN/Pages/home.aspx). IRSN estimates a deposition of 300–600 kBq m − 2 of Cs-137 and Cs-134, corresponding to external dose of 5–10 mSv projected for the first year of exposure. They estimate that 29200 and 69400 people could be exposed to 5 mSv and 10 mSv, respectively, in the first year of exposure. Those estimates do not include those in the exclusion zone. Note, however, that the estimation does not take into account voluntary evacuation or the lifestyles of residents.

we in australia were lead to believe there was only one bomb tested in australia at maralinga in school history lessons..... guess again.....

Minor testsIn addition to the major tests, a large number of minor trials were also carried out, from June 1955 and extended through to May 1963.[1] Although the major tests had been carried out with some publicity, the minor tests were carried out in absolute secrecy.[18] These minor tests left a dangerous legacy of radioactive contamination at Maralinga.[19][20]

The four series of minor trials were codenamed Kittens, Tims, Rats and Vixen.[18] In all, these trials included up to 700 tests, with tests involving experiments with plutonium, uranium, and beryllium.[21] Operation Kittens involved 99 trials, performed at both Maralinga and Emu Field in 1953–1961.[17] The tests were used in the development of neutron initiators, involving use of polonium-210 and uranium, and generated "relatively large amounts of radioactive contamination."[17] Operation Tims took place in 1955–1963, and involved 321 trials of uranium and beryllium tampers, as well as studies of plutonium compression.[17] Operation Rats investigated explosive dispersal of uranium.[17] 125 trials took place between 1956 and 1960.

Operation Vixen was formulated to investigate what would happen to a nuclear device which burnt or was subject to a non-nuclear explosion.[18] 31 Vixen A trials between 1959 and 1961 investigated the effects of an accidental fire on a nuclear weapon, and involved a total of about 1 kg of plutonium.[22] Twelve Vixen B trials, between 1960 and 1963, attempted to discover the effects of high explosives detonating a nuclear weapon in a fire (typical of conditions which would occur in aviation accidents) and involved 22 kg of plutonium.[22] They produced "jets of molten, burning plutonium extending hundreds of feet into the air."[23] It was the subsequent disposal of the waste plutonium from these minor trials – Vixen B especially – which created the major radiation problems at the site....

In 2001, Dr Sue Rabbit Roff, a researcher from the University of Dundee, uncovered documentary evidence that troops had been ordered to run, walk and crawl across areas contaminated by the Buffalo tests in the days immediately following the detonations;[11] a fact that the British government later admitted.[12] Dr Roff stated that "it puts the lie to the British government's claim that they never used humans for guinea pig-type experiments in nuclear weapons trials in Australia."[13]

Operation Antler followed in 1957. Antler was designed to test components for thermonuclear weapons, with particular emphasis on triggering mechanisms.[14] Three tests began in September, codenamed Tadje, Biak and Taranaki. The first two tests were conducted from towers, the last was suspended from balloons. Yields from the weapons were 0.93 kilotons, 5.67 kilotons and 26.6 kilotons respectively.[6] The Tadje test used cobalt pellets as a 'tracer' for determining yield;[10][15] later rumours developed that Britain had been developing a cobalt bomb.[15] The Royal Commission found that personnel handling these pellets were later exposed to the active cobalt 60.[10] Although the Antler series were better planned and organised than earlier series, intermediate fallout from the Taranaki test exceeded predictions.[10]

Japan shows mixed reaction to lack of nuclear energy
People showed mixed reactions to the suspension of Japan's last commercial nuclear reactor Saturday with some in business circles and host municipalities calling for early reactivation of nuclear energy and others backing the halt of atomic energy due to safety concerns.

Hiromasa Yonekura, head of the Japan Business Federation, called for the reactivation of nuclear reactors, expressing concern about effects of the suspension of nuclear energy on economic activities.

Anti-nuclear demonstrations have been held in Japan to mark the first time in 42 years that the country's power supply has not derived energy from nuclear plants.

Thousands of people rallied on Saturday in Tokyo and Sapporo in northern Japan near where the country's last-operating nuclear plant at Tomari village is being shut down.

Meanwhile, there is an aspect to these developments that drives it a little closer to home. One implication that bears direct significance for Russia is the geography, plain and simple. If the problem that experts deem too serious to leave to Japan’s handling without international help does escalate into a major catastrophe, this would mean new risks and new headaches for that country’s immediate neighbors – among which Russia is one. It was only roughly a month ago that Russian customs officials in the Far East reported of yet another (in Russian) batch of Japanese-made cars that had failed to pass radiation safety control upon delivery to a Russian port. And latest tests have revealed radioactive contamination still present in goods and produce in nine prefectures in Japan.

'Hot spots' detected at more than 20 schools in Koriyama
More than 20 schools in Koriyama city in Fukushima Prefecture, home to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, have ''hot spots'' with high radiation levels on their premises, a civil group said Sunday.

The finding was based on municipal education board documents it obtained through an information disclosure request, it said.

They intend to CONTINUE to RECYCLE the used fule into URANIUM PLUTONIUM MIXED OXIDE MOX FUEL for use in new reactors...

and the People there are tooooooooo "simple" to wake up!

Hmmmm, but there was no active Fault-line under Daiichi,
the Epicenter was far away, deep in the Sea!

And none of the British Plants is equipped to handle
