Experts suggest burying all plutonium underground
A US research team has suggested burying all plutonium stockpiles underground, to avoid the high cost of recycling it as fuel and the risk of it being used by terrorists.

A Princeton University professor and 3 other experts made the suggestion in Thursday's edition of the British science magazine, Nature.

The group says the recycling of plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel costs much more than other methods of disposal.

Study finds possible active fault beneath Mt.Fuji
Japanese seismologists say they have found what appears to be an active fault running at the base of Mount Fuji. The mountain in central Japan is the country's highest.

A research group led by Professor Hiroshi Sato at the University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute says the 30-kilometer-long fault runs along the southeast side of the mountain.

Citizens' group seeks referendum on restart of nuclear reactors
A citizens' group said Thursday it has collected around 323,000 signatures in favor of a referendum to determine whether nuclear reactors in Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s service area should be restarted.

Radiation risks: Raiders of the lost archive

Old collections of irradiated tissues could answer modern-day questions about the dangers of radiation. Now, researchers are making a concerted effort to save the stores.

The town of Ozersk, deep in Russia's remote southern Urals, hides the relics of a massive secret experiment. From the early 1950s to the end of the cold war, nearly 250,000 animals were systematically irradiated.

Throughout their experiments, the scientists carefully preserved the tissues and meticulously recorded their findings. Similar archives of irradiated tissue were built up in the United States, Europe and Japan, where nearly half a billion animals were sacrificed to the cause. But when the cold war came to an end, the collections fell into disrepair.

Now, these archives have become important to a new generation of radiobiologists, who want to explore the effects of the extremely low doses of radiation — below 100 millisieverts — that people receive during medical procedures such as computed-tomography diagnostic scans, and by living close to the damaged Fukushima nuclear reactors in Japan.

The old collections provide a resource that could not be recreated today. Most of the experiments were done under precise conditions, at a wide range of radiation doses and usually for the lifetime of the animals. “We will never be able to repeat the scale of those animal experiments, for both funding and ethical reasons,” says Gayle Woloschak, a radiation biologist at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. “But maybe we can reuse the legacy tissue.”

Meanwhile, another tissue rescue operation was taking place in the United States. In the mid-1990s, Woloschak had worked on samples from 7,000 beagles and 50,000 mice that had been irradiated in experiments at the Argonne Research Laboratory in Illinois between 1969 and 1992. But after she moved to Northwestern, she was dismayed to hear that the samples were being thrown out and secured permission from the Department of Energy to store them at Northwestern.

“When the community found out I had all the Argonne tissues they began to ask if I could save their tissues, too,” Woloschak says. Northwestern University is now the official home for material from all US animal irradiation studies, and Woloschak estimates that she has so far received 20,000 samples. But she has also discovered that many samples have already been destroyed, including those from vast mouse studies done at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and some large-scale dog studies conducted at the University of California, Davis. Woloschak says that she “felt frustrated and angry that the government had invested so many millions of dollars — and immense human effort — into studies that were just going to be trashed because of concerns about space”. Tissue collections have also been destroyed elsewhere, including from experiments done at Hiroshima University in Japan, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development's research centre in Casaccia and the UK Medical Research Council's complex in Harwell.

GAO Slams US Nuclear Decommissioning Fund & NRC

The US Government Accountability Office has slammed the NRC and the reactor decommissioning fund claiming the fund is inadequate as is the NRC oversight.
Citing that the majority of the funds do not have enough money to cover real decommissioning costs, some with only 57% of the needed money in the fund.

forcibly take over all of Fukushima Prefecture with troops

the UN Security Council needs to make the resolution,

I am truly impressed by the technology employed by japan in the face of the worst nuclear disaster in history. In japan, not in the US. We can talk about the problems here when we have one as catastrophic as fuku daiichi.

If japan nukesters are so sharp, why did they not do something when confronted with the projection years earlier, by their own scientists, of a tsunami flooding the plant?

Why did they not do something about the GE Mark I design-flawed reactors? Hard-venting?

Why did they allow the reactors to melt down? The proper procedures would have prevented it.

How do you like it that Tokyo Bay is irradiated? Did your best people arrange that for you? Bio-accumulation will destroy japan, eventually. Time is not on your side.
