IAEA: Iran may be hiding radioactivity
The International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran may be decontaminating soil at a military site in an attempt to hide traces of radioactivity.

Diplomatic sources say the IAEA made the claim to its member states on Wednesday at a briefing in Vienna.

The nuclear watchdog reportedly exhibited satellite images taken at the military facility near the capital Tehran on May 25th. Agency officials say the images show that Iran is scraping the ground.

Photos may show Iran nuclear cover-up
A US think tank has published satellite images it says show Iran's attempts to destroy evidence at a military facility suspected of developing nuclear weapons.

The Institute for Science and International Security on Wednesday released photos of the facility near Tehran, taken on May 25th.

Comparing the latest imagery with that taken in early April, it says 2 buildings suspected of being the sites of experiments of high explosives used in nuclear weapons have been demolished.

Massive quake expected off Boso Peninsula
Japanese researchers say a massive earthquake could occur off a peninsula to the east of Tokyo, in an area separate from the one that triggered the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan reported to a government panel on Wednesday that analysis of global positioning system data shows that the tip of the Boso Peninsula has been moving about 3 centimeters north each year since 1997.

The authority says quake-causing strain may be building up in the area, where a marine tectonic plate slides under a continental plate.

55% against Ohi nuclear plant restart
An NHK survey has found that more than half of the residents near a Japanese town hosting a nuclear power plant oppose restarting the offline reactors.

For 3 days from May 25th NHK surveyed residents of Ohi Town in Fukui Prefecture where the nuclear plant is located. The survey also included residents of 4 neighboring municipalities and Osaka City, the largest municipality served by the plant.

No safe radiation level
[link to www.edmontonjournal.com]

[snip]

Re: "Bluefin tuna in U.S. reveals radiation from Japan," the Journal, May 29.

There is no threshold for ionizing radiation's impact on health. Even the smallest excess of radiation over natural background will affect the health of exposed individuals and their descendants.

The "safe-to-eat" limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments are meaningless. There is no safe level of radiation.
Why are we told over and over that low levels of radiation pose no health hazard?

Japan’s 3/11 quake, tsunami caused atmosphere disturbance
[link to japandailypress.com]

[snip]

NASA has reported that not only did last year’s March earthquake and tsunami destroy northern Japan’s Tohoku region, it also wreaked havoc on the atmosphere. The energy was so great from one of the Earth’s worst earthquakes and resulting tsunami, that disturbances were recorded in the ionosphere, the upper atmosphere that is roughly 50 to 500 miles above the surface of the planet.

Images revealed on Friday by NASA show that forces from the earthly disruptions were reflected in the movements of electrons far above. These movements were monitored by satellites and receivers on the ground by studying the GPS signals sent back and forth.

Well, I don't know how much other earthquakes or tsunamis affect the ionosphere, but nuclear devices often do even if they are far from the ionosphere, by virtue of their EMF pulse.

Japan to make more plutonium despite big stockpile

[link to www.seattlepi.com]

[snip]

In the meantime, Japan's plutonium stockpile — most of which is stored in France and Britain — has swelled despite Tokyo's promise to international regulators not to produce a plutonium surplus.

Its plutonium holdings have increased fivefold from about 7 tons in 1993 to 37 tons at the end of 2010. Japan initially said the stockpile would shrink rapidly in early 2000s as its fuel cycle kicked in, but that hasn't happened.

Critics argue that since no additional spent fuel is being created, and there are questions about how the plutonium would be used, this is not a good time start producing more. They also say it makes no sense for Japan to minimize its plutonium glut by calling it a "stockpile" rather than a "surplus."

Nuclear waste: Researchers are devising new ways to deal with the byproducts of nuclear power. But it is not just a technological problem
[link to www.economist.com]

[snip]

THE accident at the Fukushima nuclear power-station in Japan last year, the worst since the explosion at Chernobyl in 1986, has led many countries to reconsider their commitment to nuclear power. It has also drawn new attention to the enduring problem of dealing with nuclear waste. Around 270,000 tonnes of high-level waste, mostly spent fuel, are in temporary storage around the world. Another 10,000 tonnes of waste are added each year, according to the World Nuclear Association, an industry body.

But it might make sense to bury waste deep in the seabed. Using modern equipment for undersea oil-and-gas drilling, canisters could be buried far from volcanic areas in holes plugged with seabed clay. If buried in a subduction fault, the movement of one tectonic plate sliding below another would push the canisters down into the Earth’s mantle at a rate of about ten centimetres a year. America cut off funding for seabed-disposal research in 1986, and other countries followed suit. But some people have continued to develop the idea.

Oettinger on Japan-EU nuclear energy cooperation
EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger has stressed that the European Union wants to deepen cooperation with Japan to strengthen the safety of nuclear power plants.

Oettinger spoke to NHK and other media in Brussels before his planned visit to Japan next Thursday and Friday. Oettinger is scheduled to meet Japan's Industry Minister Yukio Edano during his visit.

Oettinger said the EU is now conducting stress tests on nuclear plants in case of emergencies across the region. This was prompted by last year's accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northeastern Japan.

Vessels to build wind farm in Japan
A Japanese company is building an offshore wind farm farther off the coast than existing farms.

The company is investing about 57 million dollars to build 8 turbines with special vessels off the coast of Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

As wind power generation gains momentum in Japan, the government will introduce a law in July to oblige power utilities to buy all the electricity generated by natural sources of energy at fixed prices for certain periods.
