Typhoon MAWAR was just a tropical storm when it came by us - now a Typhoon and heading toward Japan. Chances are it won't be damaging to Japan/Fukushima; but, in my mind, any bad weather / quakes, etc. bear watching. The Typhoon season has officially started in this part of the world! |

Nuclear Waste Site [link to www.newsmax.com] [snip] The issue came up amid debate over the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act late Thursday. The bill allocates $25 million to the Yucca Mountain project. That would keep the site functioning, said Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-N.J. "Research and development activities to support Yucca are permitted," he said. "This will ensure that we keep Congress in the driver's seat for nuclear waste policy." ~ And what policy is that? Of 63,000 people who were born within 10 years from the bombing, less than one-fourth have parents who both survived the attack. Forty-nine of those surveyed had developed leukemia by the age of 35, and 26 of them had parents who were both survivors. The team says their rate of developing leukemia is apparently higher than the rate for children with a mother or father who was an atomic bomb survivor. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1295673 United States 06/04/2012 11:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to phys.org] Provided by University of Cambridge [snip] The timescale for keeping hazardous nuclear waste isolated from living organisms is unimaginably long, with times specified by nuclear regulators in Europe and the USA ranging from 10,000 to 1,000,000 years. Who knows what the human race, or indeed the planet, will be like 40,000 human generations from now. Already, the world’s nuclear power plants, which generate around a fifth of global electricity, have yielded in excess of 300,000 tons of high-level nuclear waste, a figure that will dramatically increase in the context of a world nuclear renaissance. Most of the waste is currently stored above ground in spent fuel pools or dry storage. But, as the Fukushima accident in 2011 showed, above-ground nuclear waste storage is vulnerable and there is broad agreement among nuclear-generating countries that the best option is to bury it deep and inaccessibly in the Earth. Understanding how to keep nuclear waste safe is clearly a considerable challenge, one that new research led by the University of Cambridge aims to help solve through fundamental studies of how nuclear materials behave, and are likely to behave, over massive timescales. ~ |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1295673 United States 06/04/2012 11:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Japan's Latest Nuclear Crisis: Getting Rid of the Radioactive Debris [link to www.theatlantic.com] [snip] The government insists that its radiation limits ensure that the program will pose no health risks to surrounding residents. Those limits, however, have been significantly relaxed since the disaster at Fukushima. Radioactivity is measured by becquerel per kilogram, or bq/kg. Previously, Japanese regulations required nuclear waste with 100 or more bq/kg of Cesium to be monitored and disposed of in specialized containers. But the new limit for debris in the "wide area incineration" program is 240 to 480 bq/kg. Because radioactive particles accumulate and concentrate in the ash of burned rubble, the material headed for local landfills could be significantly more radioactive. The new government limit for material headed for landfills is 8000 bq/kg, 80 times the pre-Fukushima limit. Because garbage incinerators inevitably serve as collecting grounds for radiation spread across large areas, in some cases, the limit of 8000 bq/kg has been surpassed even in facilities processing local garbage in Tokyo, according to the Ministry of the Environment. Such stories have exacerbated fears that incinerating debris from areas even closer to Fukushima could produce potentially hazardous irradiated ash. ~ |

That is even though all the reactors that might use it are either inoperable or offline while the government rethinks its gung-ho nuclear energy policy after the crisis at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 plant. "It's crazy," said Princeton University professor Frank von Hippel, a leading authority on nonproliferation issues and a former assistant director for national security in the White House Office of Science and Technology. "There is absolutely no reason to do that." ~ |

Fukui Governor Issei Nishikawa made the remark at a meeting with Nuclear Power Policy Minister Goshi Hosono on Monday. Nishikawa said a direct explanation from Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda would help win the people's trust as well as their support. He added that once the government has made such efforts, he will work to seek the understanding of the local people after consulting with the prefectural assembly and Ohi Town.
