Insiders Say San Onofre Failed To Fix Fire Safety Problems This Year Despite 2010 Warning From Feds
[link to www.kpbs.org]

[snip]

Fires represent half of the risk of core meltdowns at nuclear power plants in the United States, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, or NRC.

The documents show that so far this year, there was one small fire that was quickly extinguished and 52 fire official notifications that fire rules were not followed, all within a period of just over one month. That's consistent with the rate of problems in 2010, when the NRC warned the plant was violating safety rules. Then there were two fires and 102 notices of violations over two months. In 2009, those notices went out 104 times. And there were five fires.

Already reported but it deserves more attention...

Former Fukushima Daiichi chief hospitalized
The former head of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Masao Yoshida, has had surgery for a brain hemorrhage.

Tokyo Electric Power Company announced on Monday Yoshida underwent the emergency surgery on Thursday.

It says he was in public when the malady struck. Yoshida is presently conscious and his life is not at risk, though he remains in serious condition.

Yoshida led efforts by the plant workers to bring the reactors under control following the nuclear meltdown in March last year. He left his post in December to receive treatment for esophageal cancer.

Glad to hear it..

Nuclear power is relatively new.. the collateral effects are not easy to define with the paucity of reliable long-term information.
I suspect that a truthful revelation of all of the issues would be too much for the average bear to assimilate.
It is a long list..

South Korea to restart oldest nuclear reactor
South Korea’s oldest nuclear reactor is set to restart after a four-month closure, despite strong opposition from local residents and activists. The Kori-1 reactor in Busan was shut down on 13 March, after it was revealed that the reactor and its emergency generator had temporarily lost power during routine maintenance the month before, causing the coolant temperature to rise.

Fort Calhoun Station LER: Inoperable Equipment due to Lack of Environmental Qualifications
During the review of the current analysis of record for Main Steam Line Break (MSLB) inside containment, no analysis or evaluation could be found to address why the original Electrical Environmental Qualification (EEQ) evaluation of peak MSLB conditions remain valid. The current analysis of record establishes that containment temperatures remain above the Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) peak temperature for substantially longer (220 seconds versus 60 seconds) but at a lower temperature (347.9 degrees Fahrenheit vs. 401 degrees Fahrenheit). The longer dwell times could result in a more adverse impact on environmentally qualified equipment.

A lot of the plants have requested uprates in power generation. This means more stress on mechanicals and electronics.
The heat is also affecting some plants, both in cooling efficiency due to higher temp. water intakes and also over-heated discharge temperatures, as per regulations.

Can't be good in the long run.

Multilingual UN website opened on A-bombings
The United Nations has published a series of stories about atomic-bomb survivors living in the Americas with multilingual subtitles.

The on-line project was organized after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for preserving A-Bomb survivors' testimonies for younger generations. He made the call in 2010 when he became the first UN secretary general to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A resident of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Kaoru Ito, says on the website that only those who saw the devastation after the bombings can really understand how evil atomic weapons are. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp]

Tsunami-drifted Japan pier being cut up in Oregon
The US State of Oregon began work on Wednesday to cut up a floating pier that came ashore after drifting across the Pacific from Japan following last year's tsunami.

The 20-meter concrete pier went adrift from the port of Misawa in Japan's northern prefecture of Aomori, and reached the coast of Oregon in June. Its owner, Aomori, did not claim the structure.

The pier will be cut into 5 parts. Each section will be landed by crane and then broken into smaller parts. Concrete and metals from the structure will be recycled. A portion of the pier will be kept as a monument to mark last year's March 11th disaster.

The Oregon State Government will pay more than 84,000 dollars for the demolishing work.

Nominee to head new nuclear regulatory body vows higher safety

TOKYO — The government’s candidate to head Japan’s new nuclear regulatory body has vowed to impose stricter safety standards on utility companies that run nuclear power plants and brushed off accusations that he has a pro-industry bias.

Shunichi Tanaka is a former executive of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, which promotes development of nuclear energy. Criticism of collusion between regulators and the nuclear industry following last year’s accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has led to the creation of a more independent regulatory body which is to be launched in September.
