CT scans and radiation

Every year, more CT scans are being ordered in Australia. They provide valuable information to guide medical care, but they come with a dose of radiation. Should we be worried?

It's a wonder of modern medicine that when we have something wrong with us, a doctor no longer needs to cut us open just to see what's going on – they can now take pictures of our insides.

This field, known as medical imaging, started with the discovery of x-rays in the late 1880s but one of the biggest advances arrived in the 1970s, with the introduction of CT scans.

Whereas a plain x-ray takes just one picture, during a CT scan many x-ray images can be taken of cross sections of our body.

This allows doctors to visualise organs, bones and blood vessels and diagnose health conditions such as cancer, trauma, injuries and abnormalities in the head and abdomen.

Both fast and painless, it's probably no surprise that Australia, like many other countries, is seeing a growth in the use of CT every year.

But there is a trade-off – CT scans deliver radiation to our bodies, and at a much higher level than a traditional x-ray.

As we all know, high levels of exposure to radiation are linked to an increased risk of developing cancer. So with more and more of us having CT scans, should we be worried?

Understanding radiation exposure

We are all exposed to about 1.5 millisievert (mSv) of 'background' radiation every year, just from the radiation given off by the Earth itself and bombarding us from Space.

In comparison, a CT scan exposes us to a dose of radiation in the range of 1 mSv up to 15 mSv.

The radiation dose of a CT scan varies dramatically depending on which area of the body is being assessed and the techniques used.

As a rough guide, a CT of the chest can be equivalent to having at least 100 chest X-rays.

Entry ban lifted in a town in Fukushima
The Japanese government has lifted its entry ban on part of a town in Fukushima Prefecture that had high levels of radiation caused by the nuclear accident last year. But some residents are protesting the move.

Residents in that area of the town of Naraha started returning home on Friday after the ban was lifted at midnight.

The government has reclassified the area as having sufficiently low levels of radiation to support residents returning as soon as possible. Now they can come and go freely but are not allowed to stay overnight.

IAEA finds little quake damage at Onagawa plant
International nuclear inspectors say they've detected much less damage than expected at a Japanese nuclear power plant that experienced last year's earthquake.

A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency wrapped up on Thursday a 10-day inspection of the Onagawa plant along the Pacific Ocean in Miyagi Prefecture.

The inspectors told reporters in Tokyo on Friday that the earthquake apparently had no impact on the plant's vital safety equipment. They said a sample check of other structures also showed little damage.

The inspectors said that given the scale of the March 11th earthquake, the structural damage was far less than what they had anticipated.

237,000 signatures collected for Tokai nuke plant scrapping
Civic groups submitted some 60,000 signatures Friday to the governor of Ibaraki Prefecture in eastern Japan demanding the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power station be scrapped, bringing to roughly 237,000 the total number of signatures they have collected in opposition to the plant.

Installation of American Nuclear Reactor in India
The review of safety provisions in design of AP 1000 systems to withstand extreme natural events like earthquakes and Tsunamis, post Fukushima incident, has been carried out in the vendor country. Westinghouse Electric Company has made a presentation on the same to the Indian side. The Design Certification of the AP 1000 reactor was issued by United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) in December 2011, after the Fukushima accident.

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station LER: Manual Reactor Scram Due to Degraded Condenser Vacuum
On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 1311 hours, with the reactor at approximately 35% core thermal power, during a planned power reduction to support thermal backwash of the main condenser, a manual reactor scram was inserted due to degrading main condenser vacuum. The direct cause of the degraded vacuum is attributed to loss of the Steam Jet Air Ejector (SJAE) inter-condenser loop seal due to a partially open SJAE steam supply valve (1-HO-163). The root cause of the 1-HO-1 63 valve being partially open was due to inadequate processing of an emergent work order related to the reach rod position indication versus the actual valve position.

Affected equipment includes two 4160 volt safety buses, four 480 volt safety buses, four 120 volt AC safety trains, and four 125 volt DC safety trains.

Following an accident Class 1E AC Unit SGK05B may not be able to perform is design safety function if a single failure causes a loss of redundant Class 1E AC unit SGK05A. This is due to continued latent heat input from A train Control Room Pressurization Fan which continues to operate. SGK05A and B provide room cooling for all safety related electrical busses.

The tsunami was more than 13 meters (43 feet) high at both nuclear plants. Fukushima Dai-ichi's seawall was built to withstand a tsunami of up 5.7 meters (18.7 feet). Onagawa's seawall was nearly 14 meters (46 feet) high and survived the tsunami. It has since been extended to nearly 17 meters (56 feet) above sea level.


That is a huge difference. 18.7 feet....46 feet.
Why would two NPPs that close together have different requirements for a seawall..?
The Fuku site was excavated to get the water intakes closer to the ocean.
The Oganawa site was also excavated.. it lost 2 of 3 powerlines during the EQ.

The onagawa nuclear power station is located in both Onagawa-cho and Ishinomaki City, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, 70 km to the north of the Sendai City. The site area is about 1,730,000 sq. meters. The site was excavated to place the buildings of the station on deep rigid bed-rocks and artificial rocks.

Investigations by the government, the parliament and private groups have found that Tokyo Electric Power Co. underestimated the earthquake and tsunami risks faced by its plant at Fukushima despite a history of quakes in the region. The investigations have also criticized TEPCO and government regulators, which have developed cozy relationships, for ignoring safety standards and recommendations, including those by IAEA and other groups.

They were cheap.. wouldn't spend the nickel to save the dollar. That money went into the 'slush fund'. Equalizes the outlay on the balance sheet.. Everybody is happy.. People at risk are 'collateral damage'.

No problems.. unless there is a freaking triple-meltdown


In May, the last of Japan's 50 working reactors were turned off as safety checks were carried out, but two are now back online and generating power. Despite public protests, the government is eager to restart reactors because of the ballooning cost of fuel imports to keep the power supply running.

It's always about the money..

"This photograph was taken in 1982 by a researcher at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley - the scientist extracted a swab of lung tissue that contained a plutonium dust particle (it was taken from an ape).

The researcher placed a photographic plate on the biological sample and the tracks of electrified particles - traveling in all directions - from the plutonium particle were recorded in great detail on the film. The film, because it is sensitive to regular light, also recorded the static image of the cells. So, the film is exposed to the two images - the tracks of radiation and the 'camera image' of the cells. The researcher exposed the film to the 'slide' for 48 hours and then magnified the developed film 500 times and created this unique photograph.

The tissue photograph is called an 'autoradiograph' - the term 'radiograph' is used to describe a x-ray taken of internal body parts. The technology - sometimes called 'nuclear track film' - is used to measure a quantity of plutonium in a given biological sample, such as the amount of plutonium in the urine of nuclear reactor employees.10

The star in the photo is a partial image of the three-dimensional radiation tracks from the plutonium particle, which forms around the plutonium speck like a dandelion seed. Why? Plutonium emits high-energy rays (called 'alpha rays') that travel exceedingly short distances and in nearly straight lines - the tracks in the photo only extend about 5 cell diameters (or 35 microns). Typical 'alpha stars' form around clusters of alpha-emitting radiochemicals, like plutonium, because they emit multiple radiation tracks that are short and straight."

Nuclear facilities instructed on emergencies
Japan's labor ministry has instructed operators of nuclear facilities to better ensure worker safety during an emergency.

The instruction went to power utilities and universities that in total operate 35 nuclear facilities.

The ministry told the facilities to have enough dosimeters and adequate outfits for emergency workers.

The ministry also instructed them to be ready to share radiation detectors in the event of emergency.

Experts wants survey for 2 additional plants
Japanese experts say 2 additional nuclear power plants need to be re-examined for possible underground rifts near the facilities.

A panel of experts from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency under the industry ministry is reviewing the safety of nuclear power plants nationwide.

Experts have said that power companies should reassess underground fissures below the power plants to determine whether or not they are active faults.

Surveys have already begun at 4 facilities, including Ohi in Fukui Prefecture. The nuclear plant resumed operation last month.

Deciphering the Waste Confidence Order
On Tuesday, the five-member Commission issued an Order directing the staff not to issue licenses for new reactors or to issue renewed licenses for existing reactors for the time being. The Order, understandably, caused a flurry of interest among news media, financial analysts, the nuclear industry and activists, all of whom scrambled to decipher the Order’s ramifications.

The potential impact is enormous – the Order affects licensing reviews for as many as 21 new reactors and 12 license renewals for existing reactors. It does not affect licenses already issued or renewed.

Let’s be clear: Tuesday’s Order was not a “Full Stop” to NRC’s licensing process. The Commission stated that licensing reviews should move forward– only final licensing was put on hold.
