Greenpeace urges 3 EU nations to shut 12 nuclear reactors immediately
International environmentalist group Greenpeace has urged three nations in the European Union to shut down 12 nuclear reactors immediately on the grounds that EU tests to assess the safety of reactors have overlooked their flaws.

The 12 reactors are in the Belgian locations of Doel and Tihange, in the British location of Wylfa and in the French locations of Fessenheim and Gravelines, according to a report released by Greenpeace.

The earth environment has never before been exposed to a massive release of plutoniumPU.

We are in uncharted territory.

All we have are what scientists have told us concerning the toxicity and killing MO of plutonium contamination up till now.

The good news is that it is the kind of killing that TPTB can cover up; kind of, sort of, maybe; if they try hard enough.

Even if the spontaneous abortion rate; birth defect rate; etc reach 10% in the Japanese population, if they have in place a system to quietly and quickly eliminate this portion of the population, then the population might still be able to maintain or grow.

It reminds me of the garden in Japan where a large portion of the plants die due to a central radiation source, so that the few that survive may be studied.

30% of big Japan companies say green energy to be nuclear alternative
Over 30 percent of 109 major Japanese companies polled by Kyodo News believe that renewable energy will provide a viable alternative to nuclear power, the results showed Saturday.

Only three companies said there will be no replacement of nuclear power, indicating there is a growing view in business circles that Japan will be able to minimize its reliance on nuclear energy in the future.
Asked what will replace nuclear power, 35 companies cited renewable energy such as solar and wind power, while 10 firms said thermal power.

Fukushima towns asked to support work to select nuclear repository
The Japanese government on Sunday asked the towns nearest the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to cooperate in conducting field research to select sites to temporarily store contaminated soil.

The central government and the local town governments held a meeting in the city of Fukushima, attended by reconstruction minister Tatsuo Hirano and Environment Minister Goshi Hosono among others. The government plans to conduct soil and water tests in 12 places in the towns of Okuma, Futaba and Naraha.

One solution is to first of all not tell the public about the study, and then promote a program of overly-agressive chemo-therapy to the children so that most of them will die much sooner. Good thing it is not quite like that, yet.

Nuke reactor malfunctions, shuts down at power plant
A nuclear reactor at one of South Korea's nuclear power plants automatically shut down Sunday after its reactor protection system gave warning signals, plant operators said.

The Shin (New) Wolsong 1 reactor, located some 371 kilometers southeast of Seoul, was shut down at 10:53 a.m. due to the malfunction of a system that controls power output, according to an official from the state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.

Private firm being hired to run Neb. nuke plant
A Nebraska utility has decided to hire out-of-state experts to run the troubled nuclear power plant near Omaha.

Omaha Public Power District directors voted Thursday to contract with Exelon Generation LLC to run the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, which has been under close scrutiny by regulators. Exelon Generation is owned by Chicago-based Exelon Corp., and operates 17 reactors at 10 nuclear power plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Fort Calhoun was initially shut down for routine refueling maintenance in April 2011, but flooding along the Missouri River and safety violations forced it to remain offline. The violations included a small electrical fire in June 2011, the failure of a key electrical part during a 2010 test and deficiencies in flood planning that were discovered a year before last summer's extensive floods.

IAEA sees significant nuclear safety progress since Fukushima
VIENNA — Important progress has been made toward strengthening global nuclear safety after Japan’s Fukushima accident last year, according to the United Nations atomic watchdog.

The International Atomic Energy Agency made the assessment in a report prepared for next month’s annual meeting of IAEA member states, which endorsed the safety plan by consensus last September despite criticism that it did not go far enough.

“Since the adoption of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, significant progress has been made in several key areas,” the Vienna-based agency said.

These included “improvements in emergency preparedness and response capabilities,” it added in the nine-page document posted on its website.

3 Fukushima towns selected for 12 storage sites of radioactive debris
FUKUSHIMA — The government on Sunday announced that it has chosen three towns in Fukushima Prefecture as potential locations for long-term storage of radioactive debris and topsoil resulting from decontamination activities in the area around the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Environment minister Goshi Hosono, who is also the minister in charge of the nuclear crisis, said 12 sites will be built in Futaba (two), Okuma (nine) and Naraha (one), Fuji TV reported. Speaking at a meeting of municipal officials, Hosono said the government plans to conduct geological surveys to establish the suitability of the 12 sites for the storage of radioactive materials.

Fault ruptures confirmed near Japan Trench
Japanese scientists say they have found evidence of displacement of the tectonic plates caused by the March 11th earthquake last year.

A team from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology conducted an acoustic wave study last year along the Japan Trench about 250 kilometers off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. The study assessed the seabed structure to a depth of several kilometers.

The findings showed at least 2 displacements near the trench axis where the Pacific plate begins to sink below the plate underneath northeastern Japan.

Nuclear Electric Production Is Already Declining

According to BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy, the highest year of nuclear electric production was 2006.

There are really two trends taking place, however.

1. The countries that adopted nuclear first, that is the United States, Europe, Japan, and Russia, have been experiencing flat to declining nuclear electricity production. The countries with actual declines in generation are Japan and some of the countries in Europe outside of France.

2. The countries that began adopting nuclear later, particularly the developing countries, are continuing to show growth. China and India in particular are adding nuclear production.

Troubles hit thermal power generation facilities
Two of Japan's thermal power generation facilities have experienced problems at a time when the country is struggling under a tight electricity supply.

Kyushu Electric Power Company says output at its Karita power plant in Fukuoka Prefecture, western Japan, has been reduced because of a faulty fuel pump.

The troubled unit, capable of generating 375,000 kilowatts, is now producing only about half the amount.

Mayor checks tsunami countermeasures work at Hamaoka nuclear plant
The mayor of the Shizuoka Prefecture city where the Hamaoka atomic power plant is located visited the nuclear complex Monday to check the progress of construction work to enhance the plant's safety against huge tsunami.

Omaezaki Mayor Shigeo Ishihara visited the plant after the operator, Chubu Electric Power Co., said it will extend the construction period by about a year, to the end of 2013, and hinted the plant would not be reactivated until 2014 at the earliest.

Bill Gates to Develop New Nuclear Reactor with Korea
(Chosun) - Microsoft founder Bill Gates has pledged to develop with Korea a revolutionary nuclear reactor that will leave far less radioactive waste than existing ones.

Gates, who retired from managing Microsoft in 2008, invested US$35 million to establish a nuclear-power venture company called TerraPower in 2010.

Gates met with the head of the Korean Nuclear Society, Chang Soon-heung, in Seattle on Thursday and agreed to cooperate in the development of a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the KNS said Sunday. SFRs are next-generation nuclear technology that can use spent nuclear fuel rods from conventional reactors.

Nuclear reactor decommissioning industry poised to surge with pending closures
Approximately half of the world’s nuclear reactors are expected to be closed by 2030, creating a substantial market for the commercial nuclear reactor decommissioning industry in the years to come, states a new report from business intelligence experts GlobalData.

According to the report, "Nuclear Reactor Decommissioning Industry - Global Market Size and Competitive Landscape Analysis to 2030", more than 200 nuclear reactors - accounting for about half of the world’s nuclear facilities - will be decommissioned, assuming no life extensions are granted. The plans mean a significant boost for the global nuclear decommissioning industry, with Europe accounting for the bulk of the closures.
