Gamma rays from Fukushima rubble worse than radioactive cesium coming from plant, say officials Japanese officials reporting on the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster say that gamma rays from the rubble left by the accident are now a greater concern than radioactive cesium still being emitted from the crippled nuclear plant. A report to an International Atomic Energy Agency meeting presented Monday says that cesium being released from the plant is at approximately 0.01 becquerels per hour, well below the health-hazard level. Shinichi Kuroki, who presented the report, says the greater challenge is to reduce relatively high gamma ray radiation from the plant debris. [ link to www.japantoday.com] . Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11432405 Except that the gamma rays only affect things in the proximity of the plant, because it is radiation, which is something like light. But the cesium will travel as far as the wind or water or environment will carry it, and last for many years, because it is not radiation. It is an isotope and is a material, like very fine dust. A misleading apples and oranges statement in essence. It is a question of risk to whom. The gamma rays pose a risk mostly just to people near the disaster zone. The cesium poses a risk mostly to all other people and life on the planet.
