Gov't explores opinion differences on nuclear power by age, gender
The Japanese public's opinion on nuclear power varies according to age and gender, the government reported Monday following its second meeting with a panel of energy policy experts.

Among those who attended the public hearings, a larger percentage of people in their teens and 20s preferred maintaining nuclear power's share of electricity generation at 20-25 percent in 2030 than those in other age groups.

IAEA head visits Finnish nuclear cave
Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will on Thursday visit the world’s first permanent storage facility for nuclear waste on Finland’s west coast.

Finland’s ambitious project to bury nuclear waste in a facility meant to last 100,000 years has recently attracted a great amount of international interest.

Aomori ordered to suspend cod shipment after excessive cesium found
The government ordered Aomori Prefecture on Monday to suspend shipment of Pacific cod hauled off Hachinohe in the northeastern prefecture as excessive levels of radioactive cesium were detected in them, implementing such a ban for the prefecture for the first time after last year's Fukushima nuclear disaster.

TEPCO starts checking unused fuel removed from Fukushima No. 4 unit
Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Monday started checking the conditions of two unused nuclear fuel assemblies that were taken out from the badly damaged No. 4 reactor unit of its Fukushima Daiichi power plant in July, government officials involved in the issue said.

Studying whether the fuel assemblies have not become corroded or damaged after the devastating accident last year is expected to help the utility predict the conditions of the other assemblies stored inside the spent fuel pools of the crippled four units at the plant. The inspection work is scheduled through Wednesday.

Government to begin checking thyroids of children from outside Fukushima
[link to japandailypress.com]

[snip]

The Fukushima Prefectural Government says that out of 38,114 children tested through the end of March this year, 13,646 have been found with irregular thyroid lumps. But most doctors say that it is too early to know without a doubt that the cause was nuclear radiation. Some health officials say it can sometimes take four or five years for the effects of radiation exposure to be fully present.

More tanks for contaminated water at Fukushima
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it will build new tanks to store contaminated water.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says the plant is producing 400 tons of contaminated water per day. This is partly because groundwater is entering the reactor building through cracks in walls.

TEPCO says the existing tanks have a capacity of 220,000 tons and are 85 percent full. It says they are likely to be full in around 3 months if water accumulates at the current rate.

The tanks will boost capacity by 170,000 tons. The utility says that should be sufficient until November next year.

Gamma rays from Fukushima rubble worse than radioactive cesium coming from plant, say officials

Japanese officials reporting on the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster say that gamma rays from the rubble left by the accident are now a greater concern than radioactive cesium still being emitted from the crippled nuclear plant.

A report to an International Atomic Energy Agency meeting presented Monday says that cesium being released from the plant is at approximately 0.01 becquerels per hour, well below the health-hazard level. Shinichi Kuroki, who presented the report, says the greater challenge is to reduce relatively high gamma ray radiation from the plant debris.

Except that the gamma rays only affect things in the proximity of the plant, because it is radiation, which is something like light.

But the cesium will travel as far as the wind or water or environment will carry it, and last for many years, because it is not radiation. It is an isotope and is a material, like very fine dust.

A misleading apples and oranges statement in essence. It is a question of risk to whom.

The gamma rays pose a risk mostly just to people near the disaster zone.

The cesium poses a risk mostly to all other people and life on the planet.

Entergy to keep workers at Louisiana nuclear units through Isaac
Entergy Corp has implemented severe weather procedures at its Waterford nuclear station in St. Charles Parish, 30 miles west of New Orleans, as Tropical Storm Isaac moves toward the Gulf Coast, a spokesman said on Monday.

New Orleans-based Entergy plans to sequester about 100 workers at the 1,168-megawatt Waterford 3 unit and 100 workers at its 974-MW River Bend nuclear unit, located northwest of Baton Rouge, to maintain operations during and after the storm's landfall expected mid-week, said spokesman Carl Rhode.

No major corrosion found in unused fuel from Fukushima No. 4 unit
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Tuesday that it did not find any significant corrosion or damage during a detailed examination of an unused nuclear fuel assembly removed from the badly damaged No. 4 reactor unit at its Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

Because the assembly was stored in the unit's spent fuel pool when an explosion occurred at the building in the early days of the nuclear crisis last year, a dozen pieces of rubble were found in the bundle of fuel rods, according to the utility.

Tepco says.. hydrogen from unit three migrated to building 4 through air ducts.

Gundersen says..the No. 4 spent fuel pond got low enough on water to expose the tops of the fuel assemblies.. zircaloy cladding reacted with O2 and H2O creating hydrogen gas.

There are more theories out there, I guess.

Bellona is alarmed by the extent of the dumped Soviet waste, which is far greater than was previously known – not only to Bellona, but also to the Russian authorities themselves.

The catalogue of waste dumped at sea by the Soviets, according to documents seen by Bellona, and which were today released by the Norwegian daily Aftenposten, includes some 17,000 containers of radioactive waste, 19 ships containing radioactive waste, 14 nuclear reactors, including five that still contain spent nuclear fuel; 735 other pieces of radiactively contaminated heavy machinery, and the K-27 nuclear submarine with its two reactors loaded with nuclear fuel.

The Japanese government has released projections that up to 323,000 people could be killed in a massive earthquake and tsunami that could possibly occur near the Nankai Trough along the country's Pacific coast.

The government on Wednesday released detailed damage estimates based on a scenario with a magnitude 9 mega-quake near the trough off central to western Japan. The data is a follow-up to information released by the government in March.

A panel of experts says the majority of the Japanese public wants a society that does not depend on nuclear power, and urges the government to review its energy policy.

The panel has analyzed a series of public opinion surveys and other data on the nation's energy policy. It has found that 70 to 80 percent of respondents say the country's dependence on nuclear power should be reduced to zero percent or 15 percent by 2030.
