What a horrible thing to read..

Unannounced radiation releases into the air exposed children to the most toxic nuclear materials on a regular basis during the 1950s and 1960s. Local officials and residents made no effort to ask questions about what went on at SRS. As a result, today SRS is the most radioactively contaminated single site in the world. Though a Superfund Site, the EPA has no legal power to stop the National Nuclear Security Administration from creating more high-level nuclear waste. The NNSA continues to amass more high-level waste every day at SRS. Since the Yucca Mountain nuclear storage facility was abandoned, SRS has become the de facto high-level nuclear waste dump for the United States.

In recent weeks, the DOE-appointed Citizens Advisory Board that does “outside environmental monitoring” at the Site has shown signs of abandoning its traditional DOE rubber stamp role and began asking hard questions that had been reserved for environmental critics of SRS. The reality that radioactivity cannot be mitigated, just segregated and stored for the thousands of years it takes to decay, makes the entire Savannah River Site and the communities near it what former DOE official Robert Alvarez says is “a national sacrifice zone.”

US panel questions Fukushima preparedness
A US panel investigating last year's Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan has raised questions about contingency measures at the troubled plant.

The US National Academy of Sciences set up the panel in July. Officials of the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Company took part on Thursday.

The Japanese officials told the panel the March 11th tsunami was bigger than plant was designed to withstand. They also said company officials were not aware that a backup cooling system was not working after the loss of power sources.

Nuclear policy review irks Rokkasho village
A village assembly in northern Japan says the village should return all spent nuclear fuel stored at a local plant if the national government scraps its project of recycling the fuel.

Backing the project, Rokkasho Village in Aomori Prefecture has long accepted spent fuel from nuclear plants across Japan. The village has a nuclear reprocessing plant now undergoing test operations.

Fukushima to export peaches to Thailand
Peaches produced in Fukushima Prefecture will be sold in Thailand next week.

Farm products from prefecture will be exported to the country for the first time since last year's nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

Exports of farm and marine products from Fukushima Prefecture have been increasing, mainly to Hong Kong and Taiwan. But many countries and territories have completely halted food imports from Fukushima due to fears of radioactive contamination.

BEAVER VALLEY
At 1416 EDT, after consultation with the Unit 1 control room, the #1 138 KV bus in the Beaver Valley switchyard was deenergized by the grid system operator in response to a degraded switchyard breaker. The bus loss caused the Unit 1 A train offsite power supply to be inoperable. The Unit 1 B train offsite power supply was previously inoperable due to planned maintenance on its transformer cooling fan control circuit.

China’s Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp orders BYD Li-ion battery back-up for nuclear plants
China’s Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp (CGNPC) announced this week the results of the bidding for their largest high-power, high-capacity battery back-up stations to date, with BYD Ltd of Shenzhen winning the bid.

A “National Energy Application Technology Research and Engineering demonstration project”, CGNPC plans to couple these 3.5 MWh back-up Li-ion batteries with their nuclear power stations to deliver power up to 2.5MW levels. The energy storage station will serve as an emergency power source to safeguard workers and protect station equipment from being damaged in extreme conditions where the nuclear plants may lose their electrical supply.

The battery backup system is designed to avert a disaster such as Japan’s Fukushima Power Plant 311 experienced because of a power failure.

30% of Fukushima evacuees want their pets back
More than 30 percent of evacuees from around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant say they want to retrieve their pets that they were forced to leave behind.

The Environment Ministry asked about 1,000 former pet owners from the no-entry zone whether they intend to bring their animals home.

Three-hundred-thirty people said they would like to take back their pets. Others replied that they cannot afford to keep pets while living in shelters.

After the disaster last year, ministry and prefectural workers picked up about 750 dogs and cats abandoned in the no-go zone and transported them to safety. They have been kept at pet facilities and remain unclaimed.

TEPCO continues push to restart nuclear reactors at both Fukushima sites and Kashiwazaki-Kariwa
The Governor of Fukushima has repeatedly stated that the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear power plants will not be allowed to restart, but TEPCO just can’t come to grips with that reality. Naomi Hirose, the newly appointed president of TEPCO has poured salt in an open wound by revealing that the utility will continue to push towards reopening Reactors 5 and 6 at Fukushima Daiichi, and all four reactors at Fukushima Daini. The utility has also threatened to hike residential rates again if the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa reactors are not restarted in line with their corporate plans, but the governor of Niigata Prefecture is firmly opposed to their restart.

Independent panel planned for TEPCO plant restart
Tokyo Electric Power Company will invite a former US regulatory chief to join an independent panel of experts. The panel will review the firm's safety measures before it restarts some of its idled nuclear reactors.

The company's move is a response to harsh criticism from investigation committees created by the government and the Diet after last year's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.

TEPCO's independent panel will include former US Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman Dale Klein, lawyer and Diet-appointed investigative panel member Masafumi Sakurai, and management consultant Kenichi Omae.

Gov't to put off setting new energy policy amid lack of consensus
The Japanese government has decided to postpone setting a new energy policy, originally planned for Monday, due to difficulties in forming a consensus, government sources said Sunday.

The decision comes after business circles opposed a proposal made Thursday by the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, which stated a goal of ending nuclear plant operation in the 2030s and asked the government to reflect it in the new policy.

That little piece of land is riddled with volcanic tubes..
Any gaseous or vaporous underground contamination is going to find its way to the surface. The contaminated water is going to find its way into the ocean.

The foundation of fuku is built on sedimentary rock about called mud stone or mud rock...also called argillite. They excavated the upper alluvial sedimentary layers and used fill.

A japanese geologist has posted on physics forum that there is also permeable sandstone which allows movement of groundwater beneath and into the plant basements..
If it can get in.. it can get out.
The layers of sedimentary rock slope to the sea.

There is a reason no one can enter the restricted zone of the ocean around fuku. They don't want any outside monitoring close to the plant. They need a buffer zone to dilute the contamination.

Here is the site info. It's in japanese but has charts.

Global help urged to avert reactor 4 pool fire
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

[snip]

But even today, concerns persist among experts worldwide that reactor 4's pool is still at risk of boiling dry. If this were to occur, it would necessitate a massive and immediate evacuation of the surrounding area.

Nuclear fuel rods are extremely thin and clad with zircaloy, a zirconium alloy that contains a tiny amount of tin and other metals. But zircaloy burns if it is exposed to air, as shown in a test conducted at the Sandia National Laboratory in New Mexico just two weeks before the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the Tohoku region.

Gundersen: "I told Tepco that while I realized they hoped and believed that there will always be water in the nuclear fuel pool, I had to ask whether or not they had (already prepared and stationed) any chemicals to put out a nuclear fuel pool fire in the event they were wrong.

"Tepco's response was that there was nothing in the fuel pool that could burn, a statement I find appalling."

THE 10 STRATEGIES
Taken by the State, Prefectural Governments, Academic Flunkies
and Companies in the Cases of Minamata and Fukushima

1
Do not take responsibility.
Use sectionalism to pin blame on others.
2
Confuse victims and public opinion,
creating the impression that there are pros
and cons on each side.
3
Position victims in conflict with each other.
4
Do not record data or leave evidence.
5
Stall for time.
6
Conduct tests or surveys that will produce
underestimated results on damage.
7
Wear victims down until they give up.
8
Create an official certification
system that narrows down victim number
9
Do not release information abroad.
10
Call on academic flunkies to hold
