Concerns over Poland's atomic energy ambitions
Poland wants to wean itself off coal. The construction of two nuclear power plants on the Baltic coast is to start next year. For local resident Taoteusz Pastusiak, the fight against nuclear power is highly personal.

The day it started raining yellow poison in Eastern Europe, Taoteusz Pastusiak was pottering around his small property. He noticed the yellow soil on the earth, but didn't make much of it. It was 1986 and he was completely unaware that, more than a thousand kilometers away, an explosion had just ripped through the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl, releasing huge quantities of radioactive material into the sky. It would take another five days until he found out. "But it was too late," he said in an interview with DW.

It’s Not Over: Government Plans for the Worst: Forced Evacuation of Tokyo
[link to lewrockwell.com]

[snip]

Former Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Sumio Mabuchi, who was appointed to the post of then Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s advisor on the nuclear disaster immediately after its outbreak, proposed the injection of concrete from below the No. 4 reactor to the bottom of the storage pool, Chernobyl-style. An inspection of the pool floor, however, led TEPCO to conclude that the pool was strong enough without additional concrete. The plans were scrapped, and antiseismic reinforcements were made to the reactor building instead.

There was a chance early on that a storage pool collapse could be prevented, but according to the report Tokyo Electric Power Co. refused to take the necessary steps as a cost-cutting measure.

Ex-Colorado mining towns hope for uranium comeback
URAVAN, Colo.—Sharon Johannsen rolls along Highway 141, the sun baking the sandstone hills of southwestern Colorado's Paradox Valley. She pulls over at a wire fence: This was the baseball field; that was Main Street. All of it buried, with signs warning visitors about radiation.

Uravan and other towns in the Four Corners region went on to supply uranium for nuclear weapons and the nuclear power industry. But the boom collapsed with the end of the Cold War and troubles with nuclear energy starting with Three Mile Island in 1979.

Uravan's own troubles were worse: Some 12 million tons of radioactive tailings and other waste pushed radon levels well above safety standards. The town was declared a Superfund site, evacuated and razed in the 1980s.

Today, a Canadian company's plan to build the first conventional uranium mill licensed in the U.S. since 1979 has area residents hoping the region can once again become the uranium capital of the U.S. But there are obstacles, especially since uranium prices crashed after the 2011 meltdown at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant.

Inefficient and corrupt employment practices at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) are prolonging the disaster. Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) outsources 90 percent of the work to subcontractors, mainly utilizing Japan’s criminal syndicates, “the Yakuza.” Japan is still a middle class society and most people will not volunteer for nuclear work. Japan risks running out of workers who have not exceeded their legal radiation limits.

“End of the day, factory whistle cries, Men walk through these gates with death in their eyes” – Bruce Springsteen, Factory (1)

“Bring us the living dead. People no one will miss.”
– Fukushima official’s request to Yakuza (2)

“TEPCO’s involvement with anti-social forces and their inability to filter them out of the work-place is a national security issue … Nuclear energy shouldn’t be in the hands of the yakuza. They’re gamblers and an intelligent person doesn’t want them to have atomic dice to play with.” – Japanese Senator (3)

Questionable start for NRC
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

[snip]

The government and the Democratic Party of Japan have decided to let Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda appoint the five members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission without the consent of the Diet.

This unusual way of appointing the NRC members will only deepen the public's distrust of the nation's regulatory control of nuclear power generation and the power industry.

Fukushima plant clean-up efforts face challenges
Efforts to deal with problems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan still face many challenges more than a year after the meltdown.

Tuesday will mark one and a half years since the earthquake and tsunami that caused the accident. But the leaking of tainted water and other troubles still plague the clean-up efforts.

Experts say one of the pressing challenges is how to ensure the reliability of emergency facilities built to cool the troubled reactors.

TEPCO says it has no money to develop renewables
TOKYO — The head of the Japanese utility that owns the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant says he believes nuclear power should be part of the country’s energy mix, even though the government and the public seem to feel differently.

Naomi Hirose, president of Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), also said the utility can’t afford to invest in alternative energy since the earthquake-tsunami crisis last year that wiped out the Fukushima Daiichi plant and caused extensive radioactive meltdowns that took months to control.

Transfer of nuclear emergency center delayed
The emergency operations center of Japan's new nuclear regulatory commission will not be ready when the body is inaugurated later this month.

The government plans to set up the nuclear watchdog by the end of September.

It is a replacement for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, which is part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The ministry has promoted nuclear energy development.

Fishermen expand test catches off Fukushima
Fishermen in Fukushima Prefecture have expanded their test catches to 10 types of marine products, 18 months after the nuclear accident.

A fleet of 11 fishing boats left a port in Soma City early on Monday.

Commercial fishing restarted on an experimental basis off Fukushima Prefecture in June. Catches were limited to one type of shellfish and 2 kinds of octopuses.

OUR VIEW: Next door, nuclear research
[link to blog.al.com]

The Tennessee Valley Authority says it's willing to consider using a blend of uranium and weapons-grade plutonium as reactor fuel at its Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant near Athens. That's surprising, given the plant's safety record.

Part of the problem, critics say, is that this mix of uranium and plutonium oxide fuel, called MOX, makes reactors harder to control, may increase the risk of some types of accidents and raises the threat to public health if an accident results in a major radioactive release.

GOVERNMENT AIDING COVER UP OF BURNING RADIOACTIVE OIL
[link to www.free-press-release.com]

An appeal brief before the Appellate Division 2nd Department, containing information about the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) intentionally burning radioactive fuel oil (detoured from legitimate toxic waste disposal) was served today, as part of an appeal to force elections of LIPA Trustees.

However, the Appellate Division instructed the appellant-whistleblower to file courtesy copies of the brief by email on Friday, September 7, 2012 only to find that Suffolk County blocked him from sending his briefs to the Suffolk County Attorney. Now by blocking these emails, Suffolk County government involved may face serious consequences for intentional acts to thwart justice (18 U.S.C. § 1503 and/or 42 USC § 1983).

According to the measurement data of Fukushima prefecture [Link], they measure cesium higher than the safety limit (100Bq/Kg) from 84.85% of all the white rockfish samples from offshore Fukushima.
Also, cesium was measured from all of the samples.

Even US keeps importing fishery products from Japan. (cf. US keeps importing fishery food from Japan even after 311)

Indian riot cops drive nuclear protesters into the sea
Indian riot police fired tear gas to break up thousands of protesters on a beach near the country’s largest nuclear power project, due to fire up within weeks despite months of opposition.

Demonstrators waded into the crashing waves or escaped in fishing boats as hundreds of police advanced, television images showed. Rocks were thrown at police and several injuries were reported on both sides.
