Leibstadt nuclear reactor down for repair
The Leibstadt nuclear power plant in the canton of Aargau will be out for repairs longer than expected after a fault weld was found in a main water valve.

Officials say repairs are underway, but it is unclear how long the process will take.

One thing is certain: it will be expensive.

Number of US nuclear units under increased oversight jumped in H1 2012: NRC
The number of nuclear power reactors under heightened oversight by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission more than doubled in first-half 2012, to 41 units from 15 in second-half 2011, according to data released by the agency late Thursday.

As of June 30, 62 of 104 operating nuclear units in the US "fully met all safety and security performance objectives and were inspected by NRC using the normal inspection program," the agency said.

New nuclear watchdog launches Sep 19th
Japan's government decided on Tuesday to formally launch its new nuclear regulator on September 19th.
The creation of the nuclear watchdog comes more than 18 months after the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The new nuclear regulatory commission will be largely independent of the government and replaces the current Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. The agency was controlled by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which has promoted nuclear power, and was criticized for a lack of independence following the disaster.

Scientists council calls for review of nuclear waste disposal method
An organization representing scientists in Japan on Tuesday called on the government to review its plan to dispose of spent nuclear fuel and other high-level radioactive waste deep underground, citing the geological uncertainties regarding the current method.

1 case of thyroid cancer found following Fukushima nuclear crisis
A Fukushima prefectural government panel on the health impact from last year's nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant said Tuesday that one young person has been found to be suffering from thyroid cancer.

The finding was reported at a meeting of the eight-member panel that organized thyroid gland screening for 360,000 residents aged 18 years or younger as of March 11, 2011, when the earthquake and tsunami crippled the power plant.

like we see now here in Japan it is normal
that you discover unknown Sickness!

It will be interesting to know what kind of
Thyroid Disease the Patient got,
what is the Causality- the Melt-Down
or something else!

As CP has mentioned.. accumulated dose must be considered when discussing the ingestion of radiated substances.
A little here, a little there...
More needs to be done to protect the children of Japan.

Given the history of deceit in reporting.. how do we know these are the true results..?
Credibility lost is difficult to recover.

Fukushima aftermath: Fish contamination
Eighteen months after the nuclear accident in Fukushima, fishermen working mainly in Pacific coastal areas of northeastern Japan are catching more fish and shellfish off Fukushima Prefecture on a trial basis.

High levels of radiation have recently been detected in some fish types. A cod landed at a port in Aomori Prefecture in early August was found to be exposed to 132.7 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram. That was 1.3 times the government safety limit.

Radiation 380 times the limit was detected in a rock-trout caught off Fukushima in early August. A black sea bream caught off Miyagi Prefecture, in July was 33 times over the limit.

Japan finds decontaminating radiation challenging
Japan's central and local governments are still struggling to clean up radioactive contamination from the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The central government is responsible for the cleanup in 11 municipalities inside Fukushima prefecture. It is subsidizing decontamination in 104 municipalities outside the zone.

Scientists said samples taken in 2011 at Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, contained concentrations of up to 460 becquerels per kilogram of dry mud, a level comparable to that detected at a river mouth in Tokyo Bay last year. Some isotopes of cesium are heavily radioactive. They are produced in uranium fission and deposits are often closely associated with nuclear accidents and atomic weapons tests. A team sampled coastal seabed mud last August around the mouth of the river's Okozu diversion canal, which discharges into the Sea of Japan. The team was led by Hideo Yamazaki, a professor of environmental analysis at Kinki University.

The effects on older people after displacement by natural disaster is one thing and very unfortunate..
Feeding children radioactive food is quite another.
Don't you think these children should have the right to a healthy future..?
That is the real problem.

As far as reporting..
The reason we post articles from many sources is to achieve a balanced view of the information that we are privy to.
If one were to consider only the info from a few sources, the results would possibly be biased or incomplete.
Preponderance of evidence...

It's going to be a nightmare to clean up all of the collection points. As rain water drains from the land, it transports contamination to low-lying areas, lakes, streams, rivers and the sea.
I don't believe it can be decontaminated except by the natural ability of the earth to absorb it over a great deal of time...

I think (!) there is no danger when the Food Levels are under
10Bq. a Kilogram additional, we know this from many other Studies
with contaminated Food, i did not welcomed this Pollution
but we need to learn how to live with this triple Melt-Down,
there is no escape from Food Contamination!

The average radioactivity of bananas is 130 Bq/kg, or about 19.2 Bq per 150 gram banana.
It contains about 450 mg of potassium of which the isotope potassium-40 makes up 0.0117%,
or about 53 ugram.

Eating 1,000 bananas, or 40 tablespoons of peanut butter, or smoking 1.4 cigarettes
equals a dose of 0.1 mSv, or one millimort.

Cigarettes smoke does radioactive damage to a person’s body, especially the lungs

Bananas are radioactive enough to regularly cause false alarms on radiation sensors
used to detect possible illegal smuggling of nuclear material at US ports.

For comparison: Human adult 100 Bq/kg, carrots 126 Bq/kg, bananas 130 Bq/kg, brazil nuts 207 Bq/kg

Both Sequoyah and Watts Bar had unplanned reactor shutdowns last month.

Both reactors had electrical problems that caused the power plants to scram -- something akin to blowing a safety fuse, said Tennessee Valley Authority spokesman Ray Golden.

Reactor leak causes concern for some at NC State
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The ABC11 I-Team has uncovered new details about a leak at a local nuclear reactor.

However, it's not the reactor at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant, but the one used for research on the campus of N.C. State.

Last year, the reactor started leaking and it took two weeks to find the leak and repair it. However, what has not been reported is where exactly all that radioactive water ended up.
