Declassification Proceeds Methodically at Energy Department
The capacity of gas centrifuges to enrich uranium increased by two orders of magnitude between 1961 and 1967, from 0.39 kg-SWU/year to 30 kg-SWU/year. That striking fact was declassified by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2008 and made public this month.

Noda plans to visit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant possibly Oct. 7
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda plans to visit the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, with arrangements being made for the trip to take place on Oct. 7, his aides said Saturday.

While Noda has visited Fukushima Prefecture five times since taking office in September last year, it will be his second inspection of the plant, which was damaged by the major earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Minamisoma children take part in sports event
A group of children in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, have taken part in their first outdoor sporting event since last year's accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Minamisoma is about 25 kilometers from the damaged power plant. Until the end of September last year, the town was included in an evacuation zone.

The sport festival at Sayuri Kindergarten began with a pledge by the children to do their best.

Swiss govt. policies to end nuclear power
The Swiss government has announced concrete policies to phase out nuclear power.

The Swiss government decided to exit nuclear power by 2034 in phases, following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The policies announced on Friday include raising the purchase price of energy generated from renewable sources, and they aim at raising the ratio of renewable energy from 2 percent to 30 percent by 2050.

Switzerland has 5 commercial nuclear reactors, supplying about 40 percent of the country's energy needs.

Edano says Japan must quickly phase out nuke energy
TOKYO — Japan’s industry minister said the country must give up nuclear power plants as soon as possible because they pose too much risk in one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.

Yukio Edano said last year’s meltdowns after a tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi plant showed that nuclear power’s cost is too high. He expressed the opinion in his new book of policy views that hit stores Saturday.

Edano, who served top government spokesman during the height of the nuclear crisis last year, said he came to the conclusion after seeing “what was believed to be masterpiece of modern technology succumb to natural disaster so easily.”

“Now I want to eliminate nuclear power plants as soon as possible,” he wrote in the book, “Even if I get a beating, I must say this.”

Japan, whose land is the size of California with the population of 128 million, “cannot risk nuclear power plants,” he said.

Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) (6 - VVER-1000 Units) put its first power unit back on stream at 0234 on September 29 after the planned repairs were completed ahead of schedule, National Nuclear Generating Company Energoatom's press service reported on Saturday.

Russia Suspicious of Murky US Investor for Bulgaria's Belene NPP
Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom has expressed suspicions that the proposal of a previously unknown US consortium to revive the dead project for Bulgaria's Belene NPP might be somewhat of a theatrical performance.

"Rosatom is ready to return to the realization of the Belene NPP but we first need to discuss the details on the offer of the private US investor," stated Thursday the spokesperson of the Russian state corporation Sergey Novikov.

When you apply for either Part B and/or Part E we will collect medical, employment, and other information from you and make a decision about whether or not you qualify for compensation and benefits."


Part B of the act is designed to compensate covered employees who contract beryllium sensitivity, chronic beryllium disease, chronic silicosis or cancer "after" employment at a covered site. You must have contracted cancer; pre-cancerous conditions are not covered.

Construction of new nuclear power plant in Aomori to resume
Electric Power Development Co. said Monday it has decided to resume construction of a nuclear plant in Aomori Prefecture, becoming the first power generation firm in Japan to authorize such a move since the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi complex last year.

Speaking in the town of Oma, where the unfinished plant is located, the utility's president, Masayoshi Kitamura, said the company will embark on related procedures later in the day, but noted that the completion of the plant will be delayed for at least about 18 months from the initially planned November 2014.

Officials mull seismic tests near US nuclear plant
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Plans to use an array of powerful air cannons in an undersea seismic study near a Central California nuclear power plant have federal and state officials juggling concerns over marine life with public safety.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. wants to use big air guns to emit strong sound waves into a large, near-shore area that includes parts of marine reserves to make three-dimensional maps of fault zones, some of which were discovered in 2008, near its Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.

It’s on the news these days. Something to do with uranium most would say. President Obama mentioned it at the U.N. last week. With a coffee-can sized mass of U-235 you could easily vaporize most of Manhattan. Iran is making it at an underground facility as fast as they can. I told my class that you will hear more about U-235 in the next few weeks.

One version is called the Zippe centrifuge, originally developed in the Soviet Union by a team led by 60 captured German scientists after World War II, among them Gernot Zippe, who immigrated to the United States in the 1960s.

In his design the rotor spins at a tremendously high rate of 90,000 RPM, corresponding to a speed at its edge greater than Mach 2. Because of this rapid spin and the fact that the bottom of the gaseous mix is heated, a convection current is set up that helps move the molecules of U-238 down, forcing the precious U-235 to move up, where a scoop collects it.

This is the technique that Iran has adopted, and why not? Their nuclear program was launched in the 1950s with the help of the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program under the Eisenhower administration. When will we ever learn?

Schroeder pled guilty in November to conspiracy to defraud the United States for his participation in the scheme, and The False Claims Act bars recovery by any whistleblower who is convicted of criminal conduct for his role in the fraud.

EXELON - DRESDEN: OFFSITE NOTIFICATION DUE TO FIRE IN THE MAINTENANCE BUILDING
At 1804 hrs. CDT on Sunday, September 30, 2012, security personnel reported a fire in the mechanical maintenance shop. Fire Brigade responded and due to the severity of the fire, Coal City Fire Department was called for assistance. The fire was successfully extinguished at 1834 hrs. There were no personnel injured in the fire. The fire did not affect any structures, systems, or components that are required to provide for nuclear safety. At no time was the health and safety of the public adversely affected by this condition.

WISCONSIN RADIATION PROTECTION: CREMATORY CONTAMINATED DUE TO MEDICAL IMPLANT
A Wisconsin funeral Home places remains in a concrete container.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) received a phone call from the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison informing them that the university had received a phone call from a funeral home, that had just cremated remains of a person who had received an I-125 lung mesh implant. The implant was put in the patient on September 13, 2012 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison hospital. The patient was implanted with a lung mesh with 40 seeds totaling 23 mCi.

Japan introduces environment tax
The Japanese government has introduced an environment tax beginning on Monday to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Critics say the tax will lead to higher prices for consumers.

The new tax comes on top of an existing tax businesses in Japan must pay on crude oil and coal imports.

The government says it will use the extra revenue to boost renewable energy and power-saving projects.

Atomic panel quits nuclear policy work
A government panel in Japan is calling off work to formulate a new policy outline on nuclear energy. Drafting the outline was the Atomic Energy Commission's main duty for more than 50 years.

The commission met on Tuesday and decided to disband a conference of experts that had been reviewing the outline since 2010.

In response to last year's Fukushima nuclear accident, the government in September announced future nuclear energy policy would be decided by a ministerial conference on energy and the environment.
