MSDF, coast guard to conduct 1st nuclear plant terror drill
The Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Japan Coast Guard will conduct a first-of-its-kind joint drill on Tuesday to prepare for possible terrorist attacks on costal nuclear plants, the MSDF said Friday.


The drill to track and monitor suspicious vessels and prevent their approach will be held at Wakasa Bay in the Sea of Japan off Fukui Prefecture, the MSDF said.

EU to ease regulations on Japanese food imports
The European Union is planning to ease restrictions on imports of food products from Japan.

Last year's accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant led the EU to impose restrictions on food products from Tokyo and 10 prefectures, mostly in northeast Japan.

EU experts met on Friday to ease the restrictions.

EU officials say inspections will still be required for up to 8 food products that may contain radioactive substances above permissible levels. They include tea, mushrooms, rice, soy beans, and seafood.

Ozawa visits renewable energy facility in Germany
The former leader of the Democratic Party of Japan, Ichiro Ozawa, has visited a renewable energy facility in the southern German state of Bavaria.

Ozawa, who now heads the People's Life First Party, inspected a biomass energy facility in Merkendorf, where power consumed is fully supplied from renewable resources.

He also visited a nuclear power plant in Essenbach.

He later told reporters that he was able to verify his party's assertion that Japan could phase out nuclear power and convert to renewable energy as is happening in Germany.
