Blind River, Elliot Lake, Spanish and the Township of the North Shore have all passed initial screenings in the search to find a home for Canada's first nuclear waste disposal site. But Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Bruce Hyer said he's concerned the project hasn't been discussed enough in communities that might be close to the transportation corridors used to move the waste.

EDITORIAL: Nuclear Regulation Authority’s integrity being put to the test
[link to ajw.asahi.com]

[snip]

The NRA is empowered to require nuclear power plant operators to suspend reactor operations if faults are determined to be active.

At present, the nuclear reactors are operating despite fears the fault is active. If the inspection work takes months to complete, can it be said that the NRA is truly paying attention to safety?

KEPCO is hoping to continue operating nuclear reactors. But if the inspection work proceeds at a pace set by the company, it is hardly likely to win public trust.

The NRA has had to repeatedly correct diagrams it created based on data from electric power companies in coming up with a forecast on the proliferation of radioactive materials in case of catastrophic accidents at nuclear power plants. The nuclear watchdog says it will thoroughly scrutinize the diagrams again.

Top Nuclear Official: Japan in “desperate, seemingly endless battle with radiation” — “Seemingly infinite damage to the daily life of residents”
[link to enenews.com]

[snip from comments]

Every nuclear reactor and uranium/thorium mine is an extinction level event. And as some very perspicacious people have rightly and very prophetically warned: Nuclear reactors can never be perfectly safe. Have you noticed Busby say it. He actually implied either life exists on this planet or the nuclear fuel cycle. The gap between life and nukes is…INFINITY. The conundrum of modern civilization(mc): the problem of things like nuclear wastes- the non-returnable commodity(!) of mc is expressed very well in normal civilization's living principles: The earth is bound by actions which do not return. Return – a component of the life cycle must be the bottom line of all activities. If you cannot return we land in the plight of the radiation situation: infinitely lasting poisons everywhere: There is true knowledge: To see one changeless life in all that lives, in the separate the inseparable: So the radiation contaminates all threads of life and non life and leads to us becoming n-wastes and thus extinction.

and:

"No concrete program to recover from the damage to the environment."
No doubt about it, Japan should have evacuated. Almost too late now. More devestating than the nuke bombs. Japan is toast. Finished. People must not allow nuclear power to operate anywhere near them. What states will we have to abandon as our old nukes fail in the coming years? Now, the Japanese are just moving radiation around the nation, incinerating nuclear wastes throughout the islands. Irradiated food is diluted with non-irradiated food and sold anyway. Contaminated food is served to children as school lunches. They are supporting by eating food grown in Fukushima, and seafood caught in Japanese waters. Thyroids are growing, but no one is allowed to test the children. So much blood on so many hands.

And the coriums are outside of the buildings, lost in the mudrock under Fukushima, and TEPCO whistles past the graveyard, with no plan to deal with the situation. And time goes by…

Iran to have enough enriched uranium for weapon by spring: think tank
Iran has the potential to acquire by spring 2013 enough 20 percent enriched uranium for making nuclear weapons, the head of a U.S. think tank has warned.

In a recent interview with Kyodo News, David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security, said it is realistic to say that the country could obtain the necessary amount in six to seven months at the earliest since it has been boosting its facilities to enrich uranium.

Fault under Oi nuclear plant may be active, geologist warns
TOKYO — Japan’s only working nuclear power plant sits on what may be a seismic fault in the earth’s crust, a geologist has warned, saying it is “very silly” to allow it to continue operating.

Mitsuhisa Watanabe says the Earth’s plates could move under the Oi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture, causing a catastrophe to rival last year’s nuclear disaster at Fukushima—although some of his colleagues on a nuclear advisory panel disagree.

Nuclear panel to study Tsuruga plant fissures
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority will examine fissures beneath the Tsuruga nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture to determine whether they are active faults.

Regulation Authority official Kunihiko Shimazaki will visit the plant with 4 experts later this month to assess the area's strata.

Experts who surveyed the plant in April this year found that one of the fissures could be linked to an active fault that runs beneath the compound.

They also suggested that another fissure directly below the plant's Number 2 reactor could be an active fault.

No need for new nuclear plants in the US...

US to become largest oil producer within 5 years
The International Energy Agency says the United States may become the world's largest oil producer within 5 years. The prediction comes as new technologies open up huge oil reserves deep underground.

The IEA said US oil output will surpass that of Saudi Arabia and other countries such as Russia by 2017.

The US has established technology to extract shale oil from hard rock layers thousands of meters below the ground. Commercial production has already begun.

The agency says the US will be nearly self-sufficient in energy by 2035. That's due to an expected surge in the production of shale gas, a type of natural gas also trapped in underground rock.

SUSQUEHANNA: UNIT 2 MANUAL SCRAM DUE TO LOSS OF THE INTEGRATED CONTROL SYSTEM

At approximately 0118 hours [EST] on November 9, 2012, Susquehanna Steam Electric Station Unit Two reactor was scrammed by plant operators due to a loss of ICS (Integrated Control System; which controls the reactor feed and reactor recirculation systems). The reactor operator placed the mode switch in shutdown when reactor water level reached +25 inches and lowering. All control rods inserted and both reactor recirculation pumps tripped at -38 inches.

FITZPATRICK: REACTOR SCRAM DUE TO TURBINE TRIP FOLLOWED BY UNUSUAL EVENT DECLARED DUE TO MAIN TRANSFORMER AND BUS DUCT FIRE

An unplanned, automatic reactor scram occurred at 0355 EST due to a Main Turbine trip signal. All safety systems operated and actuated as expected. Both the Main Transformer, T-1A and normal station services transformer T-4 activated their respective deluge systems. On-site fire brigade and offsite fire assistance have successfully extinguished the T-1A transformer fire. There is still an active fire in the T-1A bus ductwork. The plant will be taken to cold shutdown conditions.

IEA lowers nuclear power growth forecast

The International Energy Agency has revised downward its forecast for worldwide growth in nuclear power generation as countries including Japan reduce reliance on the energy source.

The IEA released its World Energy Outlook on Monday.

The report says by 2035, nuclear power generation is expected to grow 58 percent from 2010 levels, down from last year's projected growth of about 70 percent.

It says following last year's accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, not only Japan but also Germany and Switzerland are cutting reliance on nuclear power.

Wild Vegas parties celebrated atomic bomb tests of the 1950s
[link to io9.com]

Roughly one detonation occurred every three weeks throughout the 1950s just outside of Las Vegas. To capitalize on this spectacle, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce created a calendar detailing the time of the detonations, along with suggested viewing spots.

Las Vegas earned the nickname Atomic City USA, and the nightlife took advantage of this label. Thanks to the unusual combination of atomic bombs and slot machines, eight million people visited Las Vegas in 1954.

Imagine watching a bomb detonate in the wee hours of the morning, Dean Martin crooning in the background, while holding a martini in the right hand and a cigarette in the left — a surreal view on all accounts, but a possible one in 1950s Las Vegas.

Partygoers imbibed a drink christened the Atomic Cocktail , a mix of vodka, cognac, sherry, and champagne perfect for those boozy explosive evenings.

New Jersey's Ticking Time Bomb
[link to www.bluejersey.net]

[snip]

According to the NRC, we may have dodged a Fukushima-type bullet during the hurricane:

"Because the reactor was out of service at the time of the storm for a previously scheduled refueling and maintenance outage, plant operators did not have to contend with the possibility of a reactor shutdown as Sandy passed through the area. There were no immediate safety concerns," Region I Administrator Bill Dean said. "Nevertheless, there are certain observations involving procedures and on-site activities that surfaced during the event warranting a closer look. This Special Inspection will focus on those areas to gain a better understanding of how the intake water level information was monitored and communicated during the event."

Oyster Creek to be inspected after water rose outside plant during Sandy
[link to www.nj.com]

[snip]

The agency said that as water rose on Oct. 29, operators declared an "unusual event" — the lowest of four levels of emergency classification — just before 7 p.m., when the level topped 4.5 feet above mean sea level. The plant declared an "alert" — the second-lowest level of emergency classification — at 8:45 p.m., when the water level reached 6 feet above mean sea level.

Such rising water levels could hinder or stop systems used to pump cooling water into the plant.

Nearly 20 million gallons of nuclear waste are stored on the site in ponds and silos for the 50-year period needed for nuclear waste to cool down. UK Government made an unbelievable decision in 2008 to return to nuclear power and revealed plans last year to build another eight new nuclear power plants by 2025.

I just hope British children and taxpayers of the future will forgive them.

The real problem is long term storage....

50+ years a go they wanted a bomb and new how to make it...

when dealing with waste that hadn't factored that in yet citing "we will devise places, facilities and storage systems", in the near future"....

guess what?... still not 1, NOT 1 long term facility exists which is why they store it on site, or mid term storage.... and they are full to the belly and unsafe....

look at fuku and the bush fires in the US near the original labs last year and you can grasp the seriousness of the dire situation.

It is not part of the natural food chain, but is evidenced now in all living things and will continue to bio-accumulate.

Yes, but that is a side issue.

It is the mistake of the nuclear establishment to generate so much waste in the first instance, before an adequate and proven strategy for storage or disposal is formulated.

This mistake is compounded by political gamesmanship.

In the final analysis.. we all pay the price.
