Device detects radiation in Fort Worth
[link to www.myfoxdfw.com]

[snip]

FORT WORTH, Texas -

For the second time in a week, Fort Worth police officers have detected potentially dangerous levels of radiation.

For about two months, officers having been wearing pager-sized nuclear detectors around the city. On Tuesday morning something in the parking lot at 5th and Jones streets set off an officer's device.
 Quoting: Waterbug

I read that the police have radiation detectors in their cars. A guy just driving home from having radiation therapy was picked up. I thought this was to detect bombs or something but maybe it's about tracking radiation around the country. They pulled the guy over. What if it it is just to see when people become radiated past a certain level. Crazy thoughts. I find it hard to believe that our government isn't really clear about the amount of radiation at any place. Really? Are they ignoring it? No, probably not.

I love this thread, I am going to ramble on here, and maybe even rant occasionally.

Residents to be allowed to return to 5 Fukushima municipalities for New Year period

TOKYO — The government said Wednesday that it will allow residents of five towns in the evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to return home for the New Year period.

The temporary stay will be limited to six days (Dec 29-Jan 3) in five municipalities in Fukushima. They include evacuation zones such as Iitate village, parts of which are still in a no-go zone.

A Minamisoma official said it is unlikely that residents will be able to stay longer than one day since sewage, water and other infrastructure have not been fully restored.

4-legged robot developed to search inside reactor

Japanese electronics manufacturer Toshiba has developed a 4-legged robot to inspect the inside of damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The radio-controlled robot stands about 1 meter tall. It has four 70-centimeter-long legs, 6 video cameras and a radiation detector.

The robot can step over obstacles up to 40 centimeters high and climb up and down stairs.

DOE selects Babcock & Wilcox for Small Modular Reactor program

The US Department of Energy (DOE) selected a project led by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Bechtel, to design, license and help commercialize small modular reactors (SMR) in the United States. B&W will receive funding that will support accelerated development of its B&W mPower SMR technology.

Callaway passed over for nuclear reactor project

The US Department of Energy has chosen a North Carolina company to receive federal funds to develop small nuclear reactors.

The choice appears to leave a project planned by Ameren Missouri and Westinghouse on hold, at least for now.

Re: *** Fukushima *** and other nuclear-----updates and links
There is a god damned rule on this thread, every (at least) 10th post has to be positive. It has to be about the good guys winning. It has to be about progress being made in the halting of nuclear power. Or else the thread is going to go to hell as the most depressing thread of all time. Progress is being made god dammit!
 Quoting: WindyMind

Some.. not a lot.

The subject matter makes it depressing... not much to do about that.
There is not anything to be happy or positive about, as far as I'm concerned.
The slight changes the nuclear establishment is making for the better don't amount to a fart in a whirlwind.
The nukesters have us just where they want us.

But you are welcome to be positive all you want.

Underground and under water would be good.
A giant underground cavern, working area completely enclosed by water... segregated from the world.
And make the owners, builders and operators live onsite.
That might tend to make them a little safer..

Giving thanks to a rebel
[link to theweek.com]

[snip]

Masao Yoshida, 55, was on watch.

He was Fukushima's plant manager, and he was among the 50-odd employees who stayed in the hot zone as radiation levels rose well above toxic levels. He was already a hero, although at that point only a foolish one. Yoshida knew that the reactor was vulnerable to sea-water, and in the absence of emergency power or viable containment rods, that natural salty fluid was the only weapon he had.

The world would learn later that his actions averted a complete meltdown and saved, potentially, tens of thousands of lives, many even a lot more.

Yoshida would learn later that he had cancer, apparently unconnected to the high levels of radiation he was exposed to. He retired in December of 2011. He is alive, and giving some interviews, but outside of Japan, his actions are not appreciated.
