Ten more years for Smolensk reactor

The 925 MWe RBMK-1000 reactor was first connected to the grid in 1982 and has been extensively modernised as part of a RUB45 billion ($1.5 billion) package covering the three unit site – announced by Rosatom at the beginning of 2012. This followed an International Atomic Energy Agency safety mission to the plant carried out in September 2011, which noted good practices and identified areas for improvement.

The ten-year extension will see the reactor operate until 25 December 2022, a lifespan of 40 years, although a 2010 Rosatom plan was open to the possibility of Russia’s RBMKs operating for up to 45 years. The existing Smolensk reactors are set to be replaced by a new plant, Smolensk Phase II, which will consist of two to four VVER-1200 reactors. Although no firm date has yet been scheduled, the first of these is pencilled in to come on-line by 2024.

New fault found on seabed near Kanto region

Japanese researchers have discovered a new fault on the seabed off Japan's east coast. They say the fault may have formed fairly recently during an earthquake that hit the Kanto region that includes Tokyo.

A group led by Professor Emeritus Takashi Nakata of Hiroshima University located the fault in November, 20 kilometers off Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture. They used sonar to survey the shape of the seabed 1,200-meters deep.

The fault consists of a 5 to 8-meter cliff. The sonar identified bulges on the cliff that are believed to have been shaped by the movement of the seabed.

Japan moves to secure domestic energy resources

The Japanese government is increasing efforts to secure energy resources in its territorial waters as most of the country's nuclear power plants remain offline since the Fukushima accident.

Experimental drilling for methane hydrate will begin off the coast of Aichi Prefecture in central Japan in mid-January.

Methane hydrate is a kind of natural gas trapped in water crystals. The drilling will take place 1,000-meters below the ocean and is aimed at determining whether the supplies are commercially viable.

Enews had an article about a company, Vital Choices, that tests their Alaskan fish for radiation. They flash freeze their fish and mail it to you. Mailing is free for orders over $99. I went fishing in Alaska three years ago, flash froze my catch and mailed it home. It was the best fish I have ever had. Listed below is a link to the article. I'm going to order some salmon and halibut. I will keep you all posted.

So quick question here. Has there been any legitimate fallout studies released to the publish? There are tons of tubes of gieger counter readings and nuclear slueths with their maps and such. But I heard any official results, say from WHO, US, Japan gov, etc are either classified top secret or have been purposefully obscured or falsified. I guess the basic question is, in all the noise, does anyone have a real understanding based on science and data?

Confusing medical industry and demographic statistics help JP gov conceal the radiation effect on health
[link to fukushima-diary.com]

[snip]

Governmental policy is making it impossible to prove the link of a health problem and Fukushima accident

Mori Masako, the chief of Consumer Affairs Agency and the Agency of countermeasures to the falling birthrate of the government stated Japanese government is going to consider to legislate the promotion to make retailers sell Fukushima products for harmful rumor. By this law, the government can force retailers to sell Fukushima products. (*3) It’s not only food that the government is spreading around.
On 1/4/2013, Iwate prefectural government announced they will finish processing 90% of the disaster debris by the end of this year. Tsunami deposit and non-inflammables can’t be spread to incinerate all around in Japan but they will recycle it to the construction material of public investment. (*4)
Whatever the governmental intention is, they are spreading radioactive material to all around in Japan, which leads to homogenization of the contamination level. It can increase the cancer rate, still-birth rate, abortion rate and the deformation rate equally in Japan so it would be difficult to prove it’s linked to Fukushima accident.

Fukushima Decontamination Misconduct Puts Entire Program In Question

January 4th, 2013 | Add a Comment
[Translate]

Asahi Shimbun has revealed a widespread series of problems with the decontamination program in Fukushima. The Environment Ministry hired groups of construction contractors to do the work and set out rules to be followed such as collecting contaminated water and proper disposal of debris.
What was found was widespread failure to follow the rules and purposeful misconduct that may lead to even worse contamination of the region. Companies hired to do the work were found dumping soil and plant debris into rivers and ditches rather than isolating and packing up the materials for proper disposal. This practice just moves the contamination to another place. By putting it in rivers or water ways it increases the amount of contamination running into rivers. These construction crews also failed to collect contaminated water, instead letting it run off into the environment causing the contamination to simply gather somewhere else.
--snip--
Workers also told reporters they were instructed to only decontaminate in the areas where decontamination comparison readings were to be taken.

300,000 Still In Temporary Housing After 3-11 Disaster

January 2nd, 2013 | Add a Comment
[Translate]

NHK reports 300,000 are still in temporary housing after the March 2011 disaster. Japan Today cites a number of 305,000 across 8 prefectures. A lack of available housing in the region and also limited flat land to build housing units were cited as contributing to the problem.

23,000 units are planned but land has been secured for only 1/3 of the units planned and only 40 have been completed.

You can’t see what’s going on inside of the hospitals

According to MHLW, 2012 marked the largest decrease in Japanese population since 1947. (Birth – death) Japanese population shrank by 212,000 in 2012. (*2) Fukushima Diary confirmed the number of death is increasing (cf, [Jan~May.2012] Decrease of population is 4 times bigger than 2007 [Link]) and the number of births from April to September sharply decreased in 2012.
