Record high radiation level found in fish caught near Fukushima plant

TOKYO — A fish contaminated with radiation levels more than 2,500 times the legal limit has been caught near Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, its operator said Friday.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said cesium equivalent to 254,000 becquerels per kilogram—or 2,540 times more than the government seafood limit—was detected in a “murasoi” fish.

The fish, similar to rockfish, was caught at a port inside the Fukushima plant, a TEPCO spokesman said.

While the EPA has refused to take action to remove the radioactive wastes for decades, the recent fire at the landfill has caught the attention of local officials and the greater St. Louis community.

"We have members who live near and around the landfill. We also have members who work on the site, and we believe that the nonunion workers who work under Republic's thumb deserve protection as well. The fire on its own is a big problem. What if the landfill fire were to reach the radioactive waste?" said Marv Kropp, President of Teamsters Joint Council 13.

"Landfill fires can burn on for years and expand—just look at what happened to Republic's landfill in Centerville, Ohio—a fire that raged for years until state officials and the EPA finally stepped up and forced real action on the part of the company," Kropp added.

"Our community can no longer tolerate delays—we're sitting on a ticking toxic time bomb," said Lara Granich, Director of Missouri Jobs with Justice "Now is the time that the EPA and Republic Services must act."

France eyes Saudi nuclear reactor sales

A top French minister and the chief executives of French utility EDF and reactor builder Areva are visiting Saudi Arabia this weekend to build a case for selling French nuclear reactors to the oil-rich country.
Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg will meet with Saudi officials and with representatives of EDF and Areva, who opened a joint office in Riyadh six months ago to lay the groundwork for a French nuclear offer.

A Consortium with VINCI as Leader, Ferrovial Agroman and Razel-Bec to Build the Tokamak Reactor Building for the ITER Project

A consortium, composed of subsidiaries of VINCI (58.3%) - VINCI Construction Grands Projets (Group Leader), Dodin Campenon Bernard (VINCI Construction), VINCI Construction France-, Ferrovial Agroman (30%) and Razel-Bec (11.7%) signed the contract with Fusion for Energy (F4E), the European Union’s organisation for Europe’s contribution to ITER, to build the Tokamak complex and to design and build nine auxiliary buildings at Cadarache, north of Aix-en-Provence in southern France. The contract is worth around €300 million and is expected to run for five and a half years.

The design studies will begin in April 2013 and the main civil engineering works in autumn 2013. The main building will house the Tokamak reactor, a 28 m-diameter cylinder, 29 m high and weighing 23,000 tonnes). With the two adjacent annexes, this will form a concrete structure 120 m long, 80m wide and 80m high.

FPL shuts down nuclear reactor on Hutchinson Island

HUTCHINSON ISLAND — One of the two nuclear reactors at the St. Lucie Plant was taken offline at 5:31 a.m. Tuesday "to investigate and repair a problem with one of the unit's four reactor coolant pumps," Florida Power & Light Co. officials said in a statement.

There were no radiological or other health hazards, and power officials deemed the situation minor.

A new public relations campaign targeting local and national media outlets will recast the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) in a more positive light, according to documents revealed online and obtained by the Ventura County Reporter.


The plan seeks to erase SSFL’s infamously polluted past, which includes at least three partial meltdowns, countless spills and mishaps involving radiation and chemicals, and open burn pits where some of the most lethal toxins ever made were set ablaze. Now the soil and groundwater are highly contaminated.

Fukushima debris hits Hawaii
Debris set adrift by the 2011 Japanese tsunami has made its way to Hawaii, triggering concerns over the unknown effects of the radiation it may carry from the meltdown of the Fukushima reactor.

Debris has washed ashore the islands of Oahu and Kauai and the state’s Department of Health has been asked to test some of the incoming material for radiation levels. Refrigerator parts, oyster buoys, housing insulation, storage bins, soda bottles, toys, fishing nets, plastic trash cans and even Japanese net boats have all washed up on Hawaiian sands in the past few weeks, triggering serious environmental concerns over both water pollution and radiation exposure.
