The governor of Tennessee was at a sportsman gathering at Old Hickory Dam today..
He is against the idea. Threatened to withhold funds for barricades if it comes down to it.

I'm ready for spring as well. Last week was sunny and temps were in the 60's. Starting to plan the garden. Thinking it won't be long till time to plan peas, potatoes, and cabbage.

Oregon has been removing many of the older dams. It impedes the salmon and steelhead migration along the Rogue River. Several dams are gone now so we will see. I love steelhead so I hope it really works.

free radicals (pollutants) interfer with cell function, as their altered chemistry are not familiar to the cell (as not evolved with such compounds),and some are able to fit natural 'signal receptors' on the membrane which opens the membrane allowing fluidic transfer in/out (a 'false signal') resulting in a polluted nternal fluid that causes the 'engine'(nucleus) to disfunction -literally putting a spanner in the works

free radicals (radiation by far the worst) are also inherently unstable, and 'rip' electrons from its surroundings in its bid to stablise, causing those molecules to become unstable, creating chain reaction/cell mutation.

Sea otter dunks basketball

A slam-dunking sea otter is making waves at a zoo in the western United States.

The otter, Eddie, leaps from the water and dunks basketballs into a hoop set up at his pool.

Zookeepers at Oregon Zoo introduced the game to 15-year-old Eddie last year as therapy. He suffers from arthritis in his elbows.

They say Eddie was dunking the ball within a week. Now, he rarely misses.

China & Russia seek talks to end Korean nuke issue

China and Russia have agreed that North Korea's nuclear problem should be resolved through the 6-party talks already in place and not fresh sanctions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Friday.

At a joint news conference after the meeting, Lavrov said they agreed that North Korea's third nuclear test earlier this month is in violation of UN resolutions and cannot be tolerated. He added that it's important to prevent North Korea from stirring an arms race or inviting military intervention.

Japan detects xenon in air after N Korean nuclear test

TOKYO — Japanese planes detected a trace amount of xenon-133 during monitoring flights over Japan the day after North Korea carried out its third nuclear test last week, the science ministry said Thursday.

The radioactive material amounting to 1.9 millibecquerels per cubic meter of air was detected from samples collected at an altitude of 300 meters off the coast of Aichi Prefecture in central Japan, Jiji Press reported.

It was the first time Japan had detected xenon-133 since it strengthened radiation monitoring in response to the test on Feb 12, the news agency said.

IAEA to propose multilateral efforts to retire Fukushima nuclear reactors

The International Atomic Energy Agency is planning to propose an international undertaking to decommission reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, a challenge that will need to be tackled in full swing in the years to come.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano told Kyodo News on Thursday, "Safe decommissioning (of the accident-hit nuclear reactors) should be undertaken not just by Japan but should draw on wisdom and the most advanced technologies from around the world."

AREVA analysis of San Onofre Unit 2 steam generators reveals new twist in restart debate

For the last year, Southern California Edison has been working to resolve the serious problems and deficiencies found in the newly installed replacement steam generators at both Unit 2 and Unit 3.  As workers have removed the fuel from Unit 3, it seems unlikely that the unit will return to service.  The utility has been strongly advocating the restart of the Unit 2 reactor at reduced power to test their theory that the steam generators will not fail completely like they did in Unit 3.

This week, the utility released another response to the NRC’s Confirmatory Action Letter, which addressed “patterns of dents and associated high contact forces” inside of the Unit 2 steam generators.  This latest revelation from analysis performed by AREVA showed that there are more dents and dings in SG 2E-089 (Unit 2) compared to SG 3E-089 (Unit 3) by a factor of about 13.  Overall, analysis found that nearly 12,000 contact indications were found in both Unit 2 steam generators as opposed to just under 4,100 contact indications in both Unit 3 steam generators. Even more alarming is that fact that these indications in Unit 2 were primarily found distributed very distinctly across entire rows of steam generator tubes, much more so than Unit 3.

TEPCO workers collect water from Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 1 torus room

According to TEPCO, twenty workers at Fukushima Daiichi spent two and a half hours in the Unit 1 reactor building collecting water and sediment for sampling analysis from the accumulated water in the torus room.  Workers collected water samples from the top of the water surface and from the bottom of the torus room.

Iberdrola Ingenieria Completes The Upgrade Of Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant In Mexico

IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA has just completed the project to upgrade the Laguna Verde nuclear plant, located in the State of Veracruz and pertaining to the Mexican state-owned Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) company.

This initiative, one of most complex and ambitious undertaken within this field anywhere in the world, was awarded to a consortium led by the IBERDROLA subsidiary (97%) in 2007 for the sum of 605 million dollars and in which Alstom Mexicana also participated (3%).

The Laguna Verde project involved replacing all equipment of units 1 and 2 with the latest generation of equipment, thereby enabling the plant to operate at 120%, increasing its capacity to 1,640 megawatts (MW).

China Wants Nuclear Reactors, and Lots of Them

Soon after the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear meltdown in March 2011, Germany announced it would decommission all its nuclear plants. Switzerland and Italy rejected proposals to build more reactors. Japan shut down its reactors and has yet to restart them. China, on the other hand, plowed ahead with existing projects, even though it suspended new approvals so it could perform more safety checks.

Last November, the government lifted the moratorium and approved four projects. The number of reactors being built is now 29—the most of any country, and 40 percent of the world’s total. “China is now one of the most important countries, if not the most important country, in the global nuclear industry,” says Antony Froggatt, a senior research fellow at Chatham House, a British think tank.

Pakistan - Two nuclear power plants to be commissioned by 2016

ISLAMABAD: Two nuclear power plants, 340MW each, are under construction at Chashma and are expected to be commissioned by 2016, with Chinese assistance.
Construction of these power plants became possible after a long-standing agreement, while three other nuclear power plants already commissioned in the country are performing well.
According to official sources a major chunk of the (PAEC) budget has been allocated to two nuclear power plants, adding PAEC envisages production of 8,800 MW by the year 2030 through nuclear power reactors.

MCGUIRE NRC EVENT REPORT: AUTOMATIC REACTOR TRIP DUE TO TURBINE TRIP ON LOSS OF BOTH MAIN FEED PUMPS

At 0957 EST on 02/21/13, Unit 1 Reactor automatically tripped from 100% power, due to a turbine trip. The turbine trip was caused by a loss of both main feedwater (MFW) pumps. The 1A motor driven auxiliary feedwater (AFW) pump auto started to feed the "A" and "B" Steam Generators (S/G). The 1B motor driven AFW pump was unavailable due to planned maintenance, so the turbine driven AFW pump was manually started to feed the "C" and "D" S/Gs.

The reactor trip was uncomplicated. All control rods fully inserted. Decay heat removal is to the main condenser via the turbine bypass valves. There was no primary to secondary leakage. Electrical buses are being supplied via offsite power. Steam generator levels are being returned to normal and MFW has been reset and is available. All other plant systems functioned as designed during and after the reactor trip. There is no impact on Unit 2. There is no impact on the health and safety of the public. The loss of the MFW pumps is still under investigation.

Markey to Securities and Exchange Commission head Elisse Walter, the lawmaker says investors do not appear to have been fully and accurately informed of design flaws found by Southern California Edison and Mitsubishi in advance of the replacement of parts of the plant, and that SoCal Edison decided to reject recommended safety modifications for fear that they would be required to undertake a new license process before the parts could be installed. SoCal Edison is the operator of the plant and hired Mitsubishi as a contractor.

N. Korea to modernize, expand nuclear arsenal to "unimaginable" extent: KCNA

North Korea vowed Saturday in the wake of its third nuclear test to modernize and expand its nuclear arsenal to an extent "unimaginable" by the United States, unless Washington drops its anti-Pyongyang stance.

"The U.S. is the chief culprit that compelled the DPRK to access and bolster nuclear deterrence by pursuing the hostile policy," the official Korean Central News Agency said, using an acronym for the country's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"If the U.S. fails to choose a correct policy, the DPRK will modernize and expand the nuclear deterrence to be unimaginable by the U.S.," it warned.

Reactor vessel installed at Yangjiang 2

Plant constructor China Nuclear Engineering and Construction Corporation (CNECC) said that Yangjiang 2's RPV was installed on 18 February. The target is to complete the installation of all the remaining heavy equipment - including the three steam generators - at the 1080 MWe CPR-1000 unit by 15 March. The steam generators arrived at the site last month.

Yangjiang 2 is one of four reactors being built at the site by China Guangdong Nuclear Power Company (CGNPC). Construction of unit 1 started in December 2008, with work on unit 2 beginning in 2009, unit 3 in 2010 and unit 4 in late 2012. The first unit is scheduled to begin generating power later this year with the remainder following to 2017. Two further units are planned for Yangjiang but their schedules have been subject to review.
