The probability of the petitioner’s postulated catastrophic grid failure, given a Carrington-like event, is not known with certainty. However, based on the NRC’s review of the existing data, the NRC believes that there is insufficient information for the NRC to conclude that the overall frequency of a series of events potentially leading to core damage at multiple nuclear sites is acceptably low such that no regulatory action is needed.

Disaster preparedness plans unfinished

Some local governments in Japan with nuclear plants in their jurisdiction will likely miss Monday's deadline for reviewing their disaster control plans.

Other municipalities have already finished the process but have yet to draw up concrete evacuation plans.

In light of the 2011 nuclear crisis, the Nuclear Regulation Authority ordered municipalities within a 30-kilometer radius of a nuclear power plant to review their disaster control measures based on new sets of guidelines.

These call for evacuation areas around nuclear plants to be expanded from the current 10 kilometers to 30. They also require evacuation or stay-at-home orders to be issued based on radiation dosage.

An NHK survey shows only 46 percent of local governments said they will be able to finish reviewing their disaster control plans to meet the deadline.

The strong thrive near Fukushima nuclear plant, 2 years on

Access to the area designated as a "no-go" zone in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami remains restricted two years on, with once domesticated animals thriving despite the evacuation of locals to escape radiation exposure.

"Two years after the accident, what remain today are the strong," said Naoto Matsumura, 53, who has stayed in the town of Tomioka in Fukushima Prefecture to care for cattle and other animals whose owners and caretakers left in mass evacuations.

"Though they were pets or livestock, they have adapted themselves to this environment," he said of the animals left behind by residents in the nearly deserted town following the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant nearby.

Two years after Fukushima nuclear accident, work resumes on new reactor

OMA, JAPAN — — At the remote northwestern tip of a snowy peninsula, beyond a small road of fishing shacks and empty one-story homes, 600 construction workers and engineers are building a brand-new nuclear plant for a country still recovering from the most severe atomic accident since Chernobyl.

The main reactor building is already at its full height, though draped in heavy fabric to protect it from the wind and freezing temperatures. A 500-foot crane swivels overhead. A completed power line stretches along a nearby ridge, where it might one day carry electricity down the peninsula and back toward the Japanese mainland — a place still fiercely divided over the long-term role of nuclear power.

Radiological emergency plan for Cape Cod does not comply with NRC mandate

The ongoing Fukushima disaster and the fact that the aging Pilgrim Nuclear Power Reactor (Pilgrim) in Plymouth is of the same Mark I design that failed in Japan has heightened awareness and concern among citizens across the region. Whether one is for or against nuclear power, all area residents have reason to be concerned about public safety.

Cape Codders are currently questioning the evacuation and radiological emergency plan for the public, which is required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and designed by Entergy and MEMA.

As of now, only residents within a 10-mile radius of Pilgrim are subject to the evacuation plan. This is the “EPZ”– the emergency planning zone. However, in Japan the NRC called for American citizens within a 50-mile zone to evacuate. If replicated here, that area would include all of Cape Cod. The state has no plans to evacuate Cape Cod residents and visitors. MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz spoke to the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee last October and acknowledged that Cape residents would be “in harm’s way,” but would not be evacuated. Instead, the state’s plan knowingly confines residents in a danger zone until they can be eventually relocated elsewhere after exposure.

Electricity trouble occurs at crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday a problem with electric power has occurred at its crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, leading to the suspension of the system to cool spent fuel pools of the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 units.

The incident, however, so far has not affected the ongoing water injection to the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors, which suffered core meltdowns in the early days of the March 2011 nuclear crisis, according to the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

Blackout halts cooling system at Fukushima plant

TEPCO officials say a power blackout has suspended a cooling system for used nuclear fuel at the struggling Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

Operator Tokyo Electric Power Company said the blackout took place shortly before 7 PM on Monday.

The affected system is intended to cool 3 pools containing about 2,100 spent rods from the plant's number 1, 3, and 4 reactors.

Officials reported that at 4 PM they registered temperatures in the pools of up to 25 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures are reportedly rising at 0.1 to 0.3 degrees per hour.

The officials said it will take about 4 days for the pools to exceed 65 degrees -- the firm's limit.

They added the blackout has interrupted the cooling system for another pool containing about 6,300 rods. It has also affected part of a system that disposes of contaminated water.

The TEPCO officials clarified the outage has not hindered the injection of coolant into the crippled reactors.

Power outage at Fukushima Daiichi halts spent fuel pool cooling at multiple units

According to TEPCO and the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority, around 19:00 on Monday night, the seismic building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant had experienced a power failure.  While the outage did not affect the monitoring instruments in the reactor containment, it did affect the spent fuel pool cooling system at Unit 1, Unit 3, and Unit 4.

TEPCO data shows that the Unit 4 spent fuel pool was at the highest temperature at the time of the outage, but has a margin of about four days before the temperatures would be expected to reach levels of concern.  The contaminated water treatment system was also knocked out by the power failure.

TEPCO workers are still investigating the cause of the outage.

I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news, and I’m going to have to point out some widespread – let’s say – untruths going around concerning the health impacts of radiation poisoning from the Fukushima meltdowns. Yes, that’s “meltdowns,” plural. It’s actually quite a bit more catastrophic than your mainstream media will tell you, and your government officials, of course, have only ever had one message on the subject: ‘It’s reaaaaaaally not so bad, so don’t you worry your pretty little head about it.’ They were saying this on day one, before they knew how bad it was. They were saying it ever since, even as the numbers skyrocketed up into uncharted territory. How can they get away with blatantly lying to the public, you might ask? That is a complex question, and requires a complex answer.

Ask yourself this, next time you come upon a “don’t worry be happy” take on a nuclear meltdown in the media: are any doctors, the people directly treating the children who live in the radioactive contamination zones, ever included in their reporting?

Short answer is no. They are not. Are these doctors far too busy and/or isolated to be interviewed? Is that the reason for their absence across the mainstream news-tainment complex?

A typical radiation news report includes an IAEA spokesman, a government official, and a factoid from the latest study that has come out, all of which bolsters the idea that nuclear meltdowns aren’t so bad. One might assume that the IAEA, or International Atomic Energy Agency, is some kind of skeptical party, a watchdog perhaps. This is false. The IAEA was created by the UN Security Council, and its five permanent nuclear powers, to “…[assist] its Member States, in the context of social and economic goals, in planning for and using nuclear science and technology for various peaceful purposes, including the generation of electricity…” In other words, the purpose of the IAEA is to promote the nuclear power industry on behalf of the most powerful nuclear states on the planet.

What you will be told by your televised talking heads is that there is such a thing as “background radiation” and that any and all radiation problems you may encounter are of no more concern to you than eating a banana or flying in a plane at high altitude. Are you really going to fall for that one? They type this stuff with a straight face.

The US Academy of Sciences studied the effects of low-level ionizing radiation in a massive report called BEIR-VII: Health Risks From Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation (2006). Well, the very first paragraph tells us, “A comprehensive review of available biological and biophysical data supports a “linear-no-threshold” (LNT) risk model—that the risk of cancer proceeds in a linear fashion at lower doses without a threshold and that the smallest dose has the potential to cause a small increase in risk to humans.”

So think about that. How then can the news media and government officials proclaim that doses are so small that they are “safe” and of no concern? Their own best available scientific data tells us that there is no “safe” dose at all, and that all radiation is bad and to be avoided. Radiation is the most potent carcinogen in existence, and it also negatively impacts vital body organs in numerous other ways.

Horrific birth defects are the norm in the radiation zones, and these, such as those seen in the two films cited above, will shock the viewer to his/her very core. This is not an academic discussion nor a scientific debate.

This is a moral outrage. Nuclear power has poisoned millions.

This is a big deal. I have to admit that I am more than a little concerned about the fallout to southern California.

Very sad. Could be something else..
But, then again.. remember the seals, whales, dolphins.
They still haven't pinpointed the cause of those events.

I have a few friends that get it, but most people I know here have no clue, including my family in San Diego and LA.

I hope that the sea lions are sick for another reason. However, I suspect that it's related to the radiation in the water and marine life off of our coast. Our tuna is already testing positive for radiation. I read a report (probably a link from here) that said most of the fallout is going to settle in SoCal and Baja. It's not a matter of when anymore. It's a really powerless feeling.

We are being lied to by our government just like they lied to the sailors on the USS Reagan (home port is San Diego). It's criminal the way our sailors were put right off the coast of Japan during the fallout for 80 days!! Many of them are sick now and the US government is denying that their illnesses are from their service in Japan.

Most people on this thread know all of this already. I guess I'm just venting because it weighs very heavy on my heart. I am greatful that you are keeping this thread alive, WB
