Damage level: minor

The company operating the disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP) in northern Japan warned about the possibility of radioactive water leak, the Kyodo news agency reported on Friday. The Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said that “contaminated water may have leaked into soil from one of the seven underground reservoir tanks,” the agency reported. Radioactive substances have been detected in the water that accumulated outside the tank, covered by three layers of waterproof sheets. The exact volume of leak is unknown, but radiation levels in the water stand at about 6,000 Becquerel per cubic centimeter. Earlier on Friday, the company reported that a cooling system of the Unit Three spent atomic fuel storage facility temporarily failed at approximately 5:30 a.m. GMT, but the problem was fixed in about three hours. Three similar incidents were reported at spent fuel facilities at the plant’s units One, Three and Four last Month.

Niger students protest French group's uranium revenues

Some 2,000 students held a protest in Niger's capital Niamey on Friday against French nuclear group Areva to demand their country get a bigger slice of its uranium mining revenues.

Marchers held aloft placards saying "No to exploitation and neo-colonialism" and "No to Areva".

"The partnership in the mining of uranium is very unbalanced to the detriment of our country," said Mahamadou Djibo Samaila, secretary general of the Union of Niamey University Students that organised the protest.

Mo. nuclear reactor closes next week for refueling

FULTON, Mo. (AP) — The Callaway Energy Center nuclear reactor will close next week for normal refueling work that is not related to an accident near the plant that injured four people, company officials said.

Four contract workers were injured in a switchyard about 300 yards from the plant Tuesday during what Ameren Missouri called an "electrical flash." Ameren had reported three workers were injured but company officials said Thursday a fourth person was hurt while trying to help the other three. The company declined to release information on the workers' conditions.

Finland's Fennovoima in talks with Rosatom over reactor

Finnish power company Fennovoima said Friday it was in exclusive talks with Russia's Rosatom over building a mid-sized nuclear reactor, after dropping bids by France's Areva and other suppliers.

The winning bid for the planned reactor, which will be located in Pyhaejoki in northwest Finland, will be announced this year, Fennovoima said, adding that a design by Japan's Toshiba for a larger reactor remains the only other candidate.

"Toshiba and Rosatom are the only companies Fennovoima is now negotiating with," Chairman Pekka Ottavainen told AFP.

Fukushima operators fear radioactive water leak
[link to www.ctvnews.ca]

[snip]

The plant is being decommissioned but continues to experience glitches. A fuel storage pool temporarily lost its cooling system Friday, less than a month after the plant suffered a more extensive outage.

The underground tank, several times the size of an Olympic-size swimming pool and similar to an industrial waste dump, is dug directly into the ground and protected by two layers of polyethylene linings inside the outermost clay-based lining, with a felt padding in between each layer.

Well... we wondered what they'd do when they ran out of
hard tanks for storage.
Did they run out of tanks or has nationalization made them more cost-conscious(cheaper than they already were)?

Cutting corners to save money is partly what caused this in the first place.
Privately owned nuclear plants for profit, place profit before safety,
recklessly gambling the safety and health of the public, relying on long odds in their favor..

We subsidize their construction, pay for the product, pre-pay for decommissioning,
pay to clean up their messes, pay with our health when they screw up..
and the owners profit.

Helluva racket.

No matter how carefully designed and executed, what gets lost in the shuffle, is human error...
both in the design and in the execution.

In all matters mechanical, Murphy's Law is ubiquitous.

Deadliest submarine disaster in US remembered
[link to www.google.com]

[snip]

Family and friends who lost loved ones when the USS Thresher sank 50 years ago joined in tossing wreaths into the water Saturday in an emotional service in remembrance of the 129 Navy crew members and civilian technicians who lost their lives in the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. history.

The USS Thresher, built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and based in Connecticut, was out for a routine deep-diving test when it ran into trouble on April 10, 1963.

The Navy believes the failure of a brazed weld allowed sea water to spray onto an electrical panel, causing an emergency shutdown of the sub's nuclear reactor. The ballast system also failed, preventing the sub from surfacing.

Filling with water, Thresher descended deeper and disintegrated under the crushing force of the ocean. Its remains rest on the ocean floor at a depth of 8,500 feet.

Another leak... the whole place is leaking...

TEPCO reports leak from another water storage tank

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it has found a small leakage of contaminated water from a storage facility at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. This follows a recent massive leak from another underground tank.

The company examined a contaminated water storage tank adjacent to the underground tank that had leaked 120 tons of radioactive water. The 2 tanks have the same structure.

TEPCO says a small amount of radioactive strontium was detected just outside a triple-layer of waterproof sheets underneath the storage tank, leading to discovery of the leak.

The tank contains more than 10,000 tons of contaminated water.
But the utility says it is a minor leak as it hasn't observed any change in the tank's water level and the concentration of radioactive substances is low.

New Fukushima facility shrinks nuclear sludge

The city of Fukushima now has Japan's first facility capable of reducing the volume of the radioactive sludge from the 2011 nuclear disaster.

The facility was installed by the Environment Ministry in a municipal sewage treatment plant. A ceremony was held in the city on Saturday.

It will dry the sludge at a temperature of 450 degrees Celsius and reduce it to about one-fifth of its original volume.

The Environment Ministry expects the facility to treat 30 tons of sludge daily.

Such sludge has been accumulating in sewage treatment plants in Fukushima and neighboring prefectures due to a lack of progress in the building of interim storage facilities.

The volume of such sludge in Fukushima Prefecture alone has risen to more than 68,000 tons.

Transatomic Power offers a salt-cooled reactor that can run on nuclear waste

Transatomic Power, which is am offshoot of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has updated a type of nuclear power plant that uses a molten-salt cooled reactor core.  The design would run at about half the cost of a standard reactor, it would be resistant to any kind of meltdown and best of all it can run on our nuclear waste.

Russ Wilcox who serves as Transatomic’s CEO says the company will need to come up with about 200 million dollars to produce the first running reactor. However, that cannot begin to be a reality until they can first get approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Once approval goes through, he estimates it would take approximately eight years to see it up and running.

Inferior parts being used in Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant

CHENNAI: The Centre, speeding up the process to commission the first unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, received a jolt from one of the country's noted nuclear scientist and former chairman of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) A Gopalakrishnan, who raised doubts about the quality of equipment in the plant. "Sub-standard materials have come to the Kudankulam plant and they are causing problems," he alleged.

The senior scientist, who endorsed indigenous development of atomic energy, complained the reactors under operation with foreign support were in a very bad state. The nuclear reactors in Tarapur built by America's General Electric in 1965, suffered serious technical problems even when they were constructed. The spare parts could not be sourced from GE even in 1995 as they were no longer making it. "Even the GE's assessment was that the plants were too old, dangerous and should be shut down, but the department of Atomic Energy continue running the plants till date," said Gopalakrishnan.

TEPCO ordered to address radioactive water leaks at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. faced increasing pressure from government entities Monday to address recent radioactive water leakages and power outages at its accident-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

"If these kinds of incidents continue to occur, the very process toward decommissioning the (crippled) reactors could be affected," Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told TEPCO President Naomi Hirose in their meeting, while adding that the public is "greatly" concerned about the situation at the plant in northeastern Japan.

N. Korea shows signs it may conduct 4th nuclear test: Seoul minister

A South Korean government minister in charge of relations with North Korea said Monday there are indications that the North is prepared to carry out its fourth nuclear test.

"All I can say is there are such signs," Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl Jae told a parliamentary session. But he declined to elaborate, saying, "It's not appropriate for me to reveal details about intelligence matters."

Earlier Monday, a South Korean government source, cited by the JoongAng Daily, said North Korea appears to be making preparations for a fourth underground nuclear weapons test at a site in Punggye-ri, the same site where it conducted its third test.
