Former NRC Chairman added to NNSA panel

Former Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory Jaczko, has been appointed to an little-known panel with the National Nuclear Security Administration this week.  The Congressional Advisory Panel was created by the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, will include 12 congressionally appointed members, and will work to make recommendations to improve operations culminating in a report due in February of 2014.

Hi everyone, quick question. Do you think that people all over the world are drinking contaminated water due to the radiation in the atmosphere that is carried around by the jet stream?...

thanks

P.S Do you think they would be testing tap water due to Fukushima?

Local water companies would be monitoring water systems.

If you are on a well, you might want to get an analysis from the county.

Rainwater, ponds, any standing water would be suspect.

There is a lot of natural radiation in the ground.
Fuku contamination is probably amongst other forms.
Lab analysis is needed to determine exact quantities and isotopes.

You might want to watch this.

I kinda knew what a hot particle was but just read up a little more. WTF one hot particle is capable of causing cancer! That's some scary stuff right there. How would you know if you had inhaled one?

I just watched this video on hot particles.

[link to fairewinds.org]

Kaltofen mentions that there was no hot particles in the car air filters measured in Seattle. I find it hard to believe though that the west coast is unaffected.

P.S Just noticed that was data from april 2011

Nuclear Event in United Kingdom on Sunday, 21 April, 2013 at 04:05 (04:05 AM) UTC.
Description
A "small fire" at a UK nuclear power plant, which provoked a major response by the emergency services, has been extinguished without anyone suffering injuries, police say. The blaze at Hartlepool Power Station caused smoke to billow from the plant, but Cleveland Police said it was drifting away from homes. Police and fire crews remained on the scene as a precaution, the force spokeswoman said. The force statement said: "During incidents such as this, there are several procedures that take place including the venting of steam generators. "This particular process causes noise, which residents of nearby areas such as Seaton Carew may hear. "There is smoke billowing as a result of the fire, but it is currently heading in a direction that does not cause any implications for members of the public. "Police and fire (officers) remain at the scene as a precautionary measure."

Press Release (Apr 19,2013)
Water Leak from the Underground Reservoirs in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (Follow-up Information No.75)
This is follow-up information regarding the water leak from the underground reservoirs at Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

The following is the progress status of the measures to prevent the further leakage of the leaked water accumulated in the leakage detection holes as of today (April 19).

- Underground reservoir No.1
The temporary pump was put in operation four times to return the leaked water accumulated in the leakage detection hole (northeast) to the reservoir.

- Underground reservoir No.2
The temporary pump was put in operation four times to return the leaked water accumulated in the leakage detection hole (northeast) to the reservoir.

- Underground reservoir No.3
The temporary pump was put in operation once in the leakage detection hole (northeast) and four times in the leakage detection hole (southwest) to return the leaked water accumulated in the leakage detection hole to the reservoir.

<end snipo>

hmmm so they have been pouring shit into the ground on plastic blankets... high end tech right there *cough... but don't worry , highly radioactive water is being found and pumped RIGHT BACK IN... go tepco... go......

Quakes hit southern Honshu, Fukushima

TOKYO — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the south coast of Honshu on Sunday, the United States Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit at 12:22 p.m., 644 kilometers south of Tokyo, at a depth of 424 kilometers, the USGS said.

Meanwhile, a 4.2-magnitude quake struck at 7:27 p.m. in Fukushima Prefecture in the northeast at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and was felt throughout the region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

It had no impact on the tsunami-ravaged Fukushima Daiichi plant, its operator Tokyo Electric Power Company said.

More Tepco mismanagement
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

[snip]

Tepco is circulating about 370 tons of water every day to cool the damaged reactors, but about 400 tons of groundwater are flowing into the basements of the reactor buildings every day and mixing with the cooling water.

This means that the amount of highly radioactive water that must be stored is increasing by 400 tons a day. Because the underground pools can no longer be used, this water must now be stored in aboveground tanks.

Tepco has stated that even in a worst possible leakage scenario, aboveground tanks would have a capacity of 5,000 tons of water, equivalent to 12 or 13 days’ worth of contaminated water. But space for building new tanks in the compound is decreasing and will eventually run out. The government, Tepco and outside experts must closely cooperate to come up with a feasible solution.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., — The U.S. Department of Energy has produced its first batch of non-weapons-grade plutonium, used to power space probes, since a nuclear reactor shutdown 25 years ago, NASA officials said.

NASA turned to buying radioactive plutonium-238 from Russia after safety problems prompted the Department of Energy to close its Savannah River Site in South Carolina in the late 1980s.

The Russian supply line ended in 2010, leaving NASA with

IAEA ends review of Fukushima decommissioning plan

The International Atomic Energy Agency says the main and most immediate challenge in decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station is managing the accumulated radioactive wastewater.

An IAEA team of experts has wound up eight days of checking Japan's efforts to decommission the crippled plant. The team conducted interviews with government and TEPCO officials and visited the site.

At a news conference in Tokyo on Monday, team leader Juan Carlos Lentijo referred to a series of wastewater leaks at the facility.

He urged the government and the operator to enhance the management of wastewater, as well as to further examine and explain the impact of such water on the plant's immediate environs.

Fuel-rod cooling halted by rats at Fukushima plant

TOKYO — Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant halted cooling of a spent fuel pool at the site on Monday to remove two dead rats, the third time cooling equipment has gone offline in five weeks because of rodents.

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said it halted cooling of the No. 2 unit pool, which stores spent uranium fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi site, for a few hours to remove the rats and install a net to stop further such intrusions.

TEPCO installs cover at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 Spent Fuel Pool

As of April 22nd, TEPCO has installed a cover over the Unit 3 spent fuel pool similar to Unit 4.   The utility hopes that the new protection will aid workers in removing debris from the top of the reactor building, but the plant has repeatedly suffered mishaps which have shaken public confidence in the utility and regulators ability to manage a long-term decommissioning project.
