US experts:N.Korea nuclear reactor near completion

US researchers say North Korea is nearing completion of a light-water nuclear reactor that the country claims is intended for power generation, but could add to worries over its nuclear program.

The US-Korea Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies released the analysis along with satellite imagery of the reactor in Nyongbyon.

The researchers say a satellite photo taken in 2011 shows trenches intended to accommodate pipes to carry cooling water. Those trenches are submerged in a September 2012 photo.

They also say a dome was placed over the reactor by November 2012.

They say imagery from February this year shows completed facilities and disassembly of a large construction crane.

What a surprise...

Radioactive tritium found at Fukushima plant wells

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has detected radioactive tritium in underground water from wells.

TEPCO found the toxic substance in water from 2 of the 8 wells newly set up on the sea side of the plant.

The monitoring wells were dug to enable TEPCO to test for water that may have leaked from the plant's underground storage pools.

Black smoke detected from Monju reactor during test operations

TOKYO — It as been reported that engineers at Japan’s fast breeder reactor plant Monju made a mistake during testing of the plant’s emergency power generator, which subsequently resulted in the release of black smoke and the ringing of the plant’s fire alarm.

On Tuesday at around 2:30 p.m., the fast breeder-reactor located in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, underwent its monthly emergency diesel generator test operations. However on this occasion, the test did not end well. According to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAERI), before the testing process it is necessary to emit the gas that accumulates in the emergency power generator by opening and then closing the valves. It is reported that the staff working at the plant, after opening the 12 valves installed in the generator, forgot to close six of the them before resuming operations, resulting in the expulsion of the worrying black smoke.

Don't know what to think about this one...

Anti-nuclear protesters' radioactive pizza returned eight years after it was sent to Italy

Placed in a traditional takeaway pizza box, it was marked with the nuclear waste danger sign with 'Best before 26005'

A radioactive takeaway pizza has been delivered back home eight years late - but is still 24,392 years within its sell-by date.

In 2005, anti-nuclear campaigners took the ‘Pizza Cumbriana’ as a protest to the Italian Embassy in London.

Martin Forwood, of Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment (CORE), made the pizza to highlight concerns over shipping Italian spent fuel to Sellafield for reprocessing.

Placed in a traditional takeaway pizza box, it was marked with the nuclear waste danger sign and listed its ‘traditional Italian ingredients’ as ‘Caesium, Americium and Plutonium’.

The pizza was topped with soil dug out of an estuary in Waberthwaite, Cumbria and marked as ‘Best before 26005’, a reference to Plutonium 239, which has a half-life of 24,400 years.

Tests found it contained levels of radioactivity which would be illegal in Italy, and categorised as Low Level Waste in the UK.

Scientific analysis also revealed the the presence of high levels of Caesium 137, Americium 241, and Plutonium 238, 239 and 240.

Slower growth drives Duke Energy's decision to suspend proposed plans for Harris Nuclear Plant expansion

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Energy notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) today of plans to suspend its application for two proposed new nuclear units on its Harris site near New Hill in Wake County, North Carolina.

Progress Energy Carolinas submitted the combined construction and operating license application to the NRC in February 2008.

"The Harris site is well suited for new nuclear generation and has not been eliminated from our long-term consideration as a site to expand our nuclear fleet," said Dhiaa Jamil, Duke Energy executive vice president and president of Duke Energy Nuclear.

I have been diagnosed with a malignant tumor on my pancreas.
Going in monday for more tests. Previous CT scan was unclear.
I have good doctors and they hope to remove the mass.

I went into the hospital on tuesday and they let me out yesterday.
I'm feeling pretty good since they put in a stent to open my bile duct, which was obstructed.
They also did a needle biopsy and endoscopy for a better view.

The surgeon said it was operable and that is the plan.

EU, Iran to consult on Tehran's nuclear program

Negotiators from the European Union and Iran will meet later this month to discuss ways to move foreword on talks on Tehran's nuclear program.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili are scheduled to meet on May 15th in Istanbul, Turkey. Ashton works as a coordinator for 6 world powers -- the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

The meeting follows a failed round of talks in Kazakhstan in April. The countries discussed a plan to ease economic sanctions against Iran in return for a halt to its enrichment of uranium to 20-percent purity.

Nuclear watchdog to study impact of 2011 quake on Fukushima plant

The Nuclear Regulation Authority decided Wednesday to investigate more thoroughly whether key safety equipment for one of the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant sustained damage before the complex was hit by a tsunami in March 2011.

The decision was reached by a panel tasked by the NRA to further study the cause of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster and how it evolved, given differences among accident investigation commissions that looked into the disaster.

A government-appointed commission expressed skepticism in its report that the magnitude 9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011, by itself caused catastrophic damage to key facilities of the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors that suffered meltdowns.

Without permission to restart Unit 2 Edison may announce decision to decommission San Onofre by end of year

In 2013, Edison International has been focused on narrowing the uncertainties which surround the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station after a first-of-a-kind event shut down the nuclear reactors.  The licensee submitted a plan to return Unit 2 to 70% power for an initial 5-month period, but was unable to provide a plan which would ensure the accelerated wear which shut down both units would be arrested and admitted that the problems would lead to a shortened life expectancy of the plant without massive overhauls.  Edison is worried the process could be delayed due to the number of interveners and other groups which are filing appeals, and have admitted that it could stretch into year-end or a longer period.

In a first-quarter results conference call, Edison executives acknowledged that “there’s a general limit of how much” the company can rack up in terms of cost “without certainty of recovery” but options to limit costs are limited due to logistics of restarting the facility if a favorable decision is reached.

If denied the authority to restart the Unit 2 reactor, Edison executives have indicated that a decision to decommission one or both units would likely be made before the end of the year.

For those not in FB.. Chris Busby The Mystery of the Radioactive Rain in Brazil
[snip]

Chris Busby:

The Mystery of the Radioactive Rain in Brazil

The decay of Radon, Rn-222 which involved gamma rays over the short term is as follows:

Rn-222 half life 3.8days , then Po-218 (3.05mins), Pb-214 (26.8mins), Bi-214 (19.9mins), Po-214 (164uSec), Pb210 (22.3y)

Of these only Ra-222 and Bi-214 give appreciable gamma radiation. The weighted contribution is about 60 Ra-222 to 80 Bi-214.

The Brazil rain samples decay with an overall half life of about 37 minutes (16uSv/h to 1uSv/h in 150 min; Four half lives 16,8,4,2,1).

If we assume that the radon was generated from radium a few hours before it was detected in the rain, that suggests Bismuth 214 as the origin of the signal.

Bi-214 may have a higher concentration in the rain due to fractionation (since it is a solid and Ra222 a gas; it may form some kind of Bismuth hydroxide).

The reason it is high in Brazil is there is a lot of Radium in Brazil.

But this is interesting anyway, as it shows, and Samuel has discovered that rain concentrates Bismuth-214; I wonder if that is a new discovery? It is certainly a radiological hazard, and drinking fresh rain water is a bad idea.

[end snip]

Well this is refreshing news:

Tepco released yet to be translated....

[snip]
On 5/4/2013, Tepco released the press release to announce they found the extremely radioactive debris on the top of reactor3.

At this moment, English version of the report is not published yet.

The debris was found in the North side of the top, where used to be the operation floor.

When they loaded it onto the remote controlling truck, they measured 540 mSv/h. However it is not announced how far they measured it from the surface of debris.

At 13:45, they regulated entering around the truck, but they moved the debris to the temporary storage facility of highly radioactive debris on the south side of the reactor building.

Tepco announced they are going to move it to the solid radioactive waste storage facility on the North side of the seismic isolation building within 5 days.
[end snip]

glad to see they can move it a few feet......

Japan considers new body to boost nuclear safety

Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshimitsu Motegi says Japan will consider setting up a new organization involving power companies to increase nuclear safety.

Motegi made a speech on Japan's energy policy at a think tank in Washington on Friday.

He said the government will establish a new organization to allow power companies to examine the safety of nuclear power plants and come up with measures to deal with problems.

Currently, the Nuclear Regulation Authority oversees the country's nuclear plants.

Motegi said following the nuclear accident in 2011, Japan has depended on imports for around 90 percent of its energy, which he calls unsustainable.

He said the government will review the energy policy of the previous government, which had the goal of shutting down all nuclear power plants in the 2030s.

Motegi reiterated the government's plan to allow the restart of nuclear plants whose safety has been verified by the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

An old article from 2011 but more important than ever...

An accident waiting to happen? Populations around U.S. nuclear plants have grown 450% since 1980

As America's nuclear power plants have aged, the once-rural areas around them have become far more crowded and much more difficult to evacuate.

Yet government and industry have turned a blind eye, even as plants are running at higher power and posing more danger in the event of an accident.

Populations around the facilities have swelled as much as four-and-a-half times since 1980, a computer-assisted population analysis shows.

But some estimates of evacuation times have not been updated in decades, even as the population has increased more than ever imagined.

Emergency plans would direct residents to flee on antiquated, two-lane roads that clog hopelessly at rush hour.

And evacuation zones have remained frozen at a ten-mile radius from each plant since they were set in 1978 - despite all that has happened since, including accidents at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima Dai-ichi in Japan.

Meanwhile, the dangers have increased.
