An inside source snapped a photo inside the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in San Diego showing plastic bags, masking tape and broom sticks used to stem a massive leaky pipe.

The picture was sent to ABC 10 News, and the anonymous source claims the photo was taken in December 2012. San Onofre owner Southern California Edison (SCE), confirmed the picture was taken inside Unit Three, but did not say when.

Why not..?

When Progress Energy applied for a rate increase last fall, the request didn’t include $70 million the Raleigh electric utility had spent on a planned addition of two reactors at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in Wake County.

But Duke Energy, which acquired Progress last summer, plans to recover those costs and pass them on to customers, Duke CEO Jim Rogers told investors Friday.

Rogers revealed the company’s intentions a day after Charlotte-based Duke announced it is canceling the Shearon Harris expansion.

We have proof from day one that we were being lied to. I myself have TWO BOOKS filled with the early daily TEPCO & IAEA reports, including the test sample reports and other research.

The lies we were being fed even from the beginning has ALWAYS been nothing less than an insulting blow to my intelligence, and, rights as a human being on this planet. I would like these perpetrators and enablers of deceit in Fukushima, in the IAEA, and, in EVERY nuclear research facility or regulatory agency for the past 80 years to know that the destruction of this planet and it's inhabitants is in their hands.

The irony is the very fact that they do not view their folly and deceit as anything more than the 'way things work.'

Between the nuclear industry and chemical companies like Dow and Monsanto, the day is coming that the Earth will be largely populated by genetically and physically flawed humans of questionable health and intelligence who will have lowered ability to keep humanity intact. I'd like to know when truth will surface.

Fish and other sea food is no longer safe, many produce and food products from the West Coast of North America have been affected. I am sad to be afraid to be outside when it rains...which was one of my lifelong pleasures.

Our planet is being bombarded by an irreversible assault in Japan, but, THAT is the one they COULD NOT HIDE. It is time for the blanket end of Nuclear Power plants worldwide. Just because this industries lobbyists and crafty 'scientists' mange to skew data, bury incidents, and, perpetuate lies to convince the world their industry is safe, does not make it safe.

Which plant will be next? The age and structural integrity of existing plants are already reasons for grave concerns, but, as the incidents --yes, more than one-- in Japan show, the nuclear power industry always manages to do and say what it wants. One look at the pictures of those 'happy Japanese farmers'' 'proudly' holding up their grossly enlarged produce with a smiling face IS PROOF that they are/have been from the start trying to condition the world to believe that Fukushima is safe.

The hopes and futures of people worldwide has been compromised, while we must live with the fact that we continue to be lied to. Those in power have lost all credibility. Civilization is broken, trust is lost, and it's only a matter of time until the silent sins of this industry is the visible face of mankind. I am beyond sad, and mourn for us all.

Japan's reconstruction minister visits Chernobyl

A Japanese minister has visited Chernobyl in Ukraine to learn from the recovery from the severe nuclear accident there.

Takumi Nemoto is in charge of reconstructing areas affected by the meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant 2 years ago.

He visited the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl on Saturday. It was the site of the world's worst nuclear accident in 1986.

Ukrainian officials and engineers explained to him how the accident occurred and what the government has done in its wake.

They also briefed him on how they store spent fuel and decontaminate local communities.

Contaminated water transfer to end early in June

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, plans to complete the transfer of radioactive water from leaking underground storage pools to tanks above ground at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant early in June.

A series of leaks of highly contaminated water have been found since April 5th in some of the underground storage pools.

TEPCO decided to stop using the underground storage pools and move all of the 23,000 tons of water to tanks.

Some fun for the kids...

Carp streamers displayed in Fukushima town

As Japan observes Children's Day on Sunday, around 100 carp-shaped streamers are flying in the sky of a town near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. People are not allowed to live there, but they can visit some parts of the town during the daytime.

A local group of young people carried out the Children's Day celebration to pray for the healthy growth of children affected by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident in March 2011.

Carp-shaped streamers symbolize a healthy childhood. The streamers were sent to the organizers by people across the country, in response to their online request. Some of the streamers carried messages encouraging children in Fukushima.

Peace march for nuclear-free world sets out from Tokyo for Hiroshima

Around 1,000 people set out Monday on a three-month peace march from Tokyo to Hiroshima in western Japan, calling for the abolishment of nuclear weapons and nuclear power generation, according to organizers.

Holding up a banner reading, "Let's abolish nuclear weapons," and with stickers that read "YES PEACE" on their arms, the marchers shouted slogans such as, "We don't need nuclear weapons" and "We don't need nuclear power," as they departed.

Joke of the week...

India Supreme Court gives go-ahead to Kudankulam nuclear plant

India's Supreme Court gave the go-ahead Monday to start up the Kudankulam nuclear plant in southern India, saying the nation needs nuclear energy and the plant is "safe and secure."

"Nuclear power plants are needed in the country for the present and future generations. The Kudankulam nuclear plant has been set up by the government for the welfare of the people," the court said in its decision.

Dismissing public safety concerns, the Supreme Court said the Kudankulam plant, with two Russian-designed 1,000-megawatt reactors under construction, is "safe and secure" and nuclear energy is necessary for the country's larger public interest and economic growth.

Nuclear regulators of 9 states meet in Tokyo over Fukushima accident

Nuclear regulators from nine countries including Japan, the United States and South Korea gathered Monday in Tokyo for a three-day meeting to discuss their responses to the 2011 nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

The International Nuclear Regulators Association meeting, chaired by Shunichi Tanaka, head of Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority, will be held behind closed doors to enable participants to communicate candidly, according to officials.

On Wednesday, they are scheduled to inspect work to contain the crisis at the plant in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, they said.

Nuclear power plant stricken in 2011 tsunami now leaking radioactive groundwater: report

The water contains strontium, a byproduct of nuclear fission, and the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant is leaking it at a rate of 75 gallons per minute.

The Japanese nuclear plant stricken by a deadly tsunami two years ago is facing the dire issue of containing radioactive waste water, as operators rush to repair yet another possible disaster.

The March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami left the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant stricken, badly damaging its reactors, which serve to cool nuclear cores.

Now contaminated groundwater containing radioactive strontium, a byproduct of nuclear fission, is leaking from damaged reactor structures at an alarming rate of 75 gallons per minute.

Foreign Ownership Could Halt Licensing of South Texas Project Nuclear Reactors

On Tuesday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission told judges overseeing the licensing case for two proposed South Texas Project reactors that the applicant (NINA) is subject to foreign ownership control or domination requirements and does not meet the provisions of the Atomic Energy Act in this regard. This will help licensing opponents in the hearing that is anticipated this fall.

"This NRC notice is great for us as opponents of two proposed reactors at the South Texas Project," said Karen Hadden, executive director of SEED Coalition, a group that has intervened in the licensing process, along with the South Texas Association for Responsible Energy and Public Citizen.

"We hope that we'll soon see clean, safe energy developed in Texas instead of dangerous nuclear power. We must prevent Fukushima style disasters from happening here."

"Federal law is clear that foreign controlled corporations are not eligible to apply for a license to build and operate nuclear power plants. The evidence is that Toshiba is in control of the project and this precludes obtaining an NRC license for South Texas Project 3 and 4," said Brett Jarmer, an attorney also representing the intervenors.

"Foreign investment in U.S nuclear projects is not per se prohibited; but Toshiba is paying all the bills for the STP 3 and 4 project. This makes it difficult to accept that Toshiba doesn't control the project," said Robert Eye.

Toshiba North America Engineering, or TANE, will assume exclusive, principal funding authority for the project, but they are a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba America, Inc, a Japanese corporation. Opponents contend that this makes them ineligible for licensing.

Palisades nuclear power plant shut down due to leaks

The Palisades nuclear power plant shut down on Sunday morning, just after 1 am, due to a leak from the Safety Injection Refueling Water Tank. Last year, the plant was shut down due to leaks from the SIRW tank, after the leaking water was found to be seeping into the control room, but was allowed to restart by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission until the leak reached some 34 gallons per day.  According to plant operators, the leakage had increased for “unknown reasons” to an estimated 90 gallons per day.

Fukushima ocean radiation panel to be live-streamed
FRISCO — More than two years have passed since a 9.0 earthquake and a 50-foot tsunami catastrophically damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant on Japan’s northeast coast, but questions still linger about the long-term impacts of radioactive pollution in the ocean.

The quake and tsunami killed about 20,000 people, and some coastal Japanese fisheries are still closed due to concern about the radiation. Next week, an international panel of scientists will discuss the accident and potential impacts to the environment and human health in a web-streamed session at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The panel will be held on May 9, 2013, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. EDT and simulcast on the Web ( [link to www.whoi.edu] Online viewers are encouraged to participate and send questions for the panel discussion via Twitter. The event hashtag is #WHOIfukushima. Questions during the discussion can also be sent via email to [email protected].

Fewer births in Japan for the 32nd year in a row

Overall, there are an estimated 8.44 million boys and 8.04 million girls. By age, 3.55 million are between 12 and 14; 3.4 million, between 9 and 11; 3.2 million, between 6 and 8; 3.17 million, between 3 and 5; and 3.16 million, between 0 and 2.

In the nation's 47 prefectures, the number of children fell especially sharply in Fukushima, where many people were evacuated as a result of the 2011 Earthquake nuclear power plant accident, down by 11,000 last year and 13,000 the previous year.
