The ugly side of solar panels
New research shows, albeit unintentional, that generating electricity with solar panels can also be a very bad idea. In some cases, producing electricity by solar panels releases more greenhouse gases than producing electricity by gas or even coal.

Danger: Solar Panels Can Be Hazardous to Your Health
t’s easy to think that solar panels can do no wrong— after all, they will help lead us out of our energy crisis, right? Unfortunately, these shining beacons of hope produce toxic e-waste just like cell phones, TVs, and computers. A report released today by the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition admonishes the solar industry to face its e-waste problem head on or risk “repeating the mistakes made by the microelectronics industry.”

The SVTC warns that solar panel production creates many of the same toxic byproducts as those found in semiconductor production, including silicon tetrachloride, dusts, and greenhouse gases like sulfur hexafluoride. These byproducts aren’t anything to scoff at— silicon tetrachloride, for example, makes land unsuitable for growing crops. And for each ton of polysilicon produced, four tons of silicon tetrachloride are generated.

The Risks to Workers Manufacturing Solar Panels

Fact is, fifty different cancer-causing chemicals are used to manufacture solar panels. Examples of these chemicals, include cadmium and arsenic. Without doubt, workers in the solar industry making and disposing solar panels are at highest risk for health issues.

Here, the stupid Australians, too stupid Chuckle

Green deaths: The forgotten dangers of solar panels
In recent years, thousands of solar panels have been placed on Australian roofs, and millions installed around the world. But how safe are they?

According to Safework Australia, each year about 30 Australians die in falls from a height, although the number of people involved in installing or maintaining solar panels is not broken down.

Some falls involving people installing or maintaining solar panels are not reported as part of work-related statistics, and then there are people electrocuted when they come into contact with power lines.

In California, where solar panels have been embraced enthusiastically, there has been a rash of deaths like this one, this one, and another three in quick succession. However, it is a worldwide phenomenon, so much so that statistics show roofing is more dangerous than coal mining.

Experts say reactor sits on active fault

An expert panel of Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has officially concluded that a reactor on the country's Sea of Japan side sits on an active fault.

The panel compiled its final report on the Number 2 reactor of the Tsuruga plant in central Japan on Wednesday. Experts had examined the site for 6 months.

Government safety guidelines ban building of reactors above faults that can move and cause earthquakes.

The finding prohibits the plant's operator, Japan Atomic Power, from putting the reactor back into operation unless the utility produces data overturning the panel's decision. If it fails, the reactor may have to be scrapped.

Monju ordered not to prepare for reactor restart

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has decided to issue orders not to prepare to restart the Monju fast-breeder reactor in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture.

The prototype reactor, currently offline, generates power using plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel.

The decision was made at the NRA's meeting on Wednesday. It was based on results of earlier inspections.

A government inspection last year found more than 9,800 missed checkups for equipment at the reactor.
It was later found that the reactor's operator, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, failed to make thorough safety checks despite submitting a report promising to improve safety procedures.

At the meeting on Wednesday NRA chief Shunichi Tanaka and other participants criticized the operator for repeating irregularities.

Japan to open nuclear plant
It took more than 20 years to build and cost nearly $30 billion. Now Japan's state-of-the-art nuclear fuel reprocessing plant is about to open. The plant in the far north of the country will be capable of turning spent nuclear fuel into eight tonnes of plutonium each year. The Japanese say the weapons grade plutonium will only be used for power generation, but that hasn't soothed American concerns about the security of the stockpile and the possible effect on a regional arms race. North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy was given an exclusive look inside the Rokkasho nuclear complex.

MARK WILLACY, REPORTER: With 17,000 tonnes of spent nuclear fuel sitting in pools like this across the country, Japan wants to reprocess it and use it again to generate electricity. It spent $28 billion building this reprocessing plant here at Rokkasho, which is capable of turning this used fuel into eight tonnes of plutonium every year.

TAKASHI AKASAKA, JAPAN NUCLEAR FUEL LTD (voiceover translation): We started constructing the plant 20 years ago and it'll be completed in October. We need this plant because Japan doesn't have its own energy resources.

IAEA, Iran fail to reach deal on inspections

Officials from Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency have failed to reach an agreement over inspections of an Iranian military facility suspected of being linked to a nuclear arms program.

It was the 10th time such talks had failed in the last year and a half.

IAEA inspection team chief Herman Nackaerts met Iranian envoy Ali Asghar Soltanieh on Wednesday in Vienna, Austria.

They discussed a framework to allow IAEA officials to enter the facility in suburban Tehran.

After more than 8 hours of talks, Nackaerts said their efforts had proven unsuccessful.

Hmm... hard to believe... 20 liters instead of 120 tons?... hahaha!...

Leak in Fukushima plant tank far smaller than earlier estimated

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex said Thursday that around 20 liters of radioactive water escaped from the first of three underground water tanks found to have leaked at the plant, much smaller than the earlier estimate of 120 tons.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. also said most of the 20 liters of water is believed to have remained within leak-detecting equipment located close to the No. 2 tank and did not seep into the soil.

Antinuclear activists on hunger strike over gov't lawsuit

Japanese antinuclear campaigners went on a hunger strike Thursday to press the government to drop a lawsuit demanding the removal of their tents erected on the premises of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in central Tokyo.

About 10 people sat down in chairs in front of the tents, wearing headbands and "happi" coats saying, "We are not removing the tents. We are against the restart of nuclear power reactors."

"People who are fighting for the end of nuclear power generation meet here and get information here," said Setsuko Kuroda, 62, who frequently visits the tents from Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture.

SAN ONOFRE RESTART ODDS DIM

A federal panel on nuclear safety has called for a full public hearing on a proposal to restart a damaged reactor at the San Onofre nuclear plant, siding in large part with the environmental group Friends of the Earth in an order published Monday.

The Atomic Licensing and Safety Board found that the destructive vibrations among steam generator tubes that have sidelined San Onofre are not accounted for in the plant’s official safety blueprint, known as the updated Final Safety Analysis Report.

Murray Jennex, a former systems engineer at San Onofre for nearly 20 years who now teaches at San Diego State University’s College of Business Administration, said the order likely pushes back a final decision on restarting the Unit 2 reactor until after summer.

“I won’t say this is a death blow to Unit 2, but it does make restart less likely,” Jennex said. “If approved, the additional downtime makes the Unit 2 restart more complex and costly due to corrosion issues from sitting.”

Edison and minority plant owner San Diego Gas & Electric have shouldered nearly $700 million in repairs and replacement power costs that they hope to pass on to customers. The California Public Utilities Commission opened a first round of hearings Monday that will help determine who pays for outage-related costs — utility customers or corporate stockholders.

Fugutive nuke operator described as “dangerous and evil”

Michael Buhrman, the infamous former licensed senior nuclear reactor operator turned fugitive who is believed to have fled the country to evade capture by authorities, was convicted last month of aggravated vehicular hijacking and vehicular hijacking and sentenced to 40 years in prison.  It took the DuPage County jury less than an hour to reach a guilty felony verdict.

“Nearly one year ago, Michael Buhrman pointed a loaded weapon at an innocent woman’s head and stole her car just for the thrill of it,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said after the verdict.
