Cleanup From Fukushima Daiichi: Technological Disaster Or Crisis In Governance?
More than 19,000 Japanese drowned, their bodies scattered on Japan’s eastern shores when a tsunami struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Kevin Wang wanted to help, and his Anaheim, Califonia-based company, PowerPlus, had the cleaning know-how to handle almost anything. Wang has spent decades developing equipment to clean up almost every sort of nasty gunk in existence, from massive oil spills, to radiological contamination, to dead bodies in quantity.

Immediately after the tsunami, Wang visited the Japanese consul general in Los Angeles to offer his company’s assistance in dealing the huge threat to public health posed by this mass casualty event. The response by Japan’s consul-general made Wang’s jaw drop. “Absolutely not,” the consul replied, continuing on with rejection language so brusque, Wang had no doubt his offer was taken as an insult.

Far from being an isolated incident, the encounter that Wang had now seems to be a harbinger of the systemic denial that has crippled the Japanese government’s response to the Fukushima Daiichi disaster. First-hand witnesses have described a deeply flawed reaction to the nuclear meltdown that has been marked by an underestimation of the extent of the contamination, insufficient radiological testing, and a glacially-slow response making clean-up harder as time passes. Most damning of all has been a stubborn unwillingess to use desperately needed clean-up assistance by ignoring technical competence in favor of political influence.

since Day 1. Foreigners was consulted and worked in Daiichi to avoid a real Catastrophe namely the lost of at least East-Japan, incl. Tokyo and Sendai!

House O.K.’s nuclear national ‘park’ as Hanford cleanup lags
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved creation of a Manhattan Project National Historical Park at Hanford and two other sites, just a week after the federal government said it won’t be able to meet deadlines for cleaning up radioactive waste on the Eastern Washington nuclear reservation.

The new “park” would include a long-shut, World War II-vintage Hanford reactor — the reservation manufactured plutonium for the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki — as well as sites in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Los Alamos, N.M. The world’s first nuclear weapons blast, in July of 1945, took place in the New Mexico desert.

The designation comes as the U.S. Department of Energy admits new, vexing problems in cleaning up the world’s largest concentration of high-level radioactive waste. The waste is a legacy of 45 years spent making plutonium for nuclear weapons, in World War II and the Cold War.

Newly installed U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will tour Hanford next Wednesday, fulfilling a promise made to Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., at his confirmation hearing. As if to underscore the promise, Cantwell said: ”The secretary of energy is absolutely right to put Hanford cleanup at the top of his ‘to do’ list.”

Nuclear regulators inspect Ohi power plant

Japan's nuclear regulators are inspecting the Ohi power plant on the Sea of Japan coast for whether it meets safety requirements that will take effect in July.

The complex has the only 2 currently operating nuclear reactors in the country.

On Saturday, 23 officials from the Nuclear Regulation Authority are carrying out an on-site inspection at the plant operated by Kansai Electric Power Company.

The officials will make a final decision later this month on whether to allow the 2 reactors to remain online beyond July.

NRA sees no critical problem at Oi nuclear plant

The Nuclear Regulation Authority found no particularly critical problem during its on-site inspection Saturday at Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Oi nuclear plant to assess whether its two reactors can meet new safety requirements coming into force in July, its inspector said.

"We did not come away with any impression that something is definitively insufficient or needs an emergency response," NRA Commissioner Toyoshi Fuketa said after his team examined the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors, the nation's sole operating reactors, in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast.
