Bechtel and the United States government have long shared close ties, albeit they have also had many showdowns. Today, most people have forgotten about the disastrous CANOL oil pipeline project, which consumed more oil than it produced and cost taxpayers a pretty penny at the same time. So enormous were the losses, the project was later described as “more destructive to the war effort than any act of sabotage by an enemy,” in which Bechtel and other defense contractors were found to be profiteering off of the war efforts and other corrupt practices.

Between 1959 and 1978, Bechtel had been awarded a role as either engineer or builder at nearly half (68) of the nation’s commercial nuclear power plants. By 1963, the company had begun construction at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, but in 1977 was thoroughly embarrassed to admit that it had installed the nuclear reactor backwards.

In 1974, the company was sued by the Consumers Power in Michigan after the Palisades plant broke down shortly after being brought online due to steam generator corrosion issues.

After the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Bechtel was contracted by the United States government to send emergency water pump cranes to the crippled nuclear power plant in an attempt to keep the reactors from melting down, but due to a bizarre situation where the cost of the equipment of $750,000 suddenly rose to $9.6 million dollars this action was delayed for weeks.

This caused the USAID to look for other resources, which they received from the DoD, but only for one water pumping system, which did not even get dispatched to Japan until March 21st. By the 26th, over two full weeks after the earthquake and tsunami, the SDF was still training off-site on the Bechtel pumping system, but it was too late as explosions had already ripped through the buildings after the nuclear fuel overheated and melted.

Shareholders of eight of the nine utilities that operate nuclear power plants will present proposals at shareholders' meetings next week urging the companies to abandon nuclear power.

But with the Abe administration clearly in favor of nuclear power, the utilities are all expected to reject the proposals and press ahead with plans to restart reactors currently offline.

All of Japan's electric power companies will hold their annual shareholders' meetings on June 26.

Similar proposals were made at last year's meetings for seven of the utilities, which all rejected the proposals.

Kansai Electric Power Co. has received a request from the Osaka municipal government, its leading shareholder, to suspend operations at all plants as quickly as possible.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. has received a request from 348 individual shareholders to decommission the Fukushima No. 2 nuclear power plant and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture.

Factbox: Japan utilities' assumptions for reactor restart dates



Six of Japan's regional electricity monopolies have included plans to restart 20 reactors by September 2015 in applications for rate hikes that have to be signed off by the country's industry ministry.

Industry observers say the assumptions are ambitious, as the country's new nuclear regulator, set up after the Fukushima disaster of March 2011, has said its review of Japan's nuclear fleet may take more than three years. The regulator has also said its standards will be the toughest in the world.

For 25 years, Iwane lived in Wakayama, Japan, which is 380 miles away from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. While her city wasn’t devastated from the nuclear accident, Iwane grew concerned for her family’s health when the Japanese government began burning radioactive debris in garbage incinerators around the country.

Iwane joined other concerned citizens to petition against the burning of waste in Wakayama. Although the petition was successful, Iwane said the government began burning debris in Osaka — about an hour away from Wakayama.

“Although it’s low-dose, this stuff goes into the air, it gets blown around by the wind and it rains down onto the people, onto crops,” Iwane said.

Iwane began testing her family’s food with a Geiger counter, a tool that measures ionizing radiation in the atmosphere. She found high levels of contamination in fish and trace elements of contamination in milk.

After discovering her younger daughter’s school lunches contained ingredients from northeastern Japan, Iwane began preparing homemade lunches. The school administrator, Iwane said, told her not to alert the other parents of her findings.

“My daughter was forced to tell her classmates that she had a food allergy,” said Iwane, who worked as an English teacher and volunteered as a PTA member at the school. “For me, that was like a stake in the heart. We’ve worked together, you trusted me, I entrusted my children to you, and now you’re telling me to suppress my research?”

The first site in the United States to produce plutonium for military use was Hanford in the state of Washington. This was the site of a major contamination incident after highly radioactive liquid waste leaked out of corroded tanks. This environmental disaster could perhaps have been avoided if we had had proper geologic facilities to dispose of radioactive materials. This is an important lesson for Japan, too. If Japan doesn't swiftly develop better storage and disposal strategies for the material recovered from the Fukushima reactor, this could pose significant problems. The primary containment vessels and other parts of the reactor are corroding, just like the tanks at Hanford. As time passes, it will become increasingly difficult to safely remove and dispose of these materials.

Any atomic policy requires the trust of the public. Japan lost this trust because of Fukushima. Japan faces so many issues in the near term, such as whether to restart its nuclear reactors. Until these issues are resolved, it will be hard to focus on the long-term fuel cycle. I think it will take a long time to restore public trust enough to move the debate forward.

Level of radioactive tritium rising in port at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday it has seen a rise in the level of radioactive tritium in seawater within the port at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

A sample collected Friday contained around 1,100 becquerels of tritium per liter, the highest level detected in seawater since the nuclear crisis at the plant commenced in March 2011.

An official of the Nuclear Regulation Authority said groundwater containing radioactive substances may be seeping into the port from the plant site and there is a need to carefully study the matter as the amount of data collected is limited.

Former Los Alamos physicist pleads guilty to charges of attempting to sell nuclear secrets for profit

A married couple who formerly worked as contractors at the Los Alamos National Laboratory pled guilty last week to espionage charges after having been indicted on multiple charges of communicating classified information, conspiring to communicate such information, and in connection with a conspiracy to participate in the development of a nuclear weapon.

The couple admitted that they provided classified nuclear information to an undercover FBI agent who was posing as a high-level intelligence officer for the Venezuelan government.

Dr. Pedro Leonardo Mascheroni, 77, faces as long as five-and-a-half years in prison and his wife, Marjorie Roxby Mascheroni, 69, as long as two years, in the terms of the plea agreement.

After viewing Robert Stone’s “Pandora’s Promise” at Mountainfilm, I left the theater greatly disturbed. I had just watched a film that I feel is the most dangerous of our era. Corinna Clendenen’s recent commentary in the Planet lauding the film as “enlightening” only underscores my sense of dread. She and others have been and will continue to be converted to the “green” nuclear solution to global warming. The film is so laced with half-truths, misrepresentations and sleight of hand visual graphics that it could easily win the Academy award for propaganda. Josef Goebbles could have learned a thing or two from Robert Stone.

Contrary to Clendenen’s claims, the film elucidates nothing. Unless of course you like looking through a distorted lens at purposely muddied waters and calling them clear. The film takes you into a control room of a Chernobyl reactor and entices you to believe the peeling paint of its ceiling was the only detrimental side effect of the tragedy, nothing that a good coat of paint couldn’t fix. It was not this control room that blew up and melted down, it was reactor #4. It stands alone, encased in a concrete and steel sarcophagus. To stand for minutes unprotected in parts of its interior would be to die.

Protected by a mere paper suit, needing no headgear or respirator, he further entices you to believe that you are touring the danger zone in Fukishima. You are not. He takes you nowhere near the real danger zone. He interviews a Japanese family living in temporary housing, making the parents seem overly protective for restricting their children’s outdoor playtime. A hand-held radiation monitor exposes their unwarranted fears.

It would take more than a year and a half to get equipment in place that can pump the waste, the report said. The state wants the Energy Department to accelerate removing the waste from the tank, according to an email from Holmes. “Washington law is clear: ‘… within 24 hours after the detection of a leak or if the owner/operator demonstrates that it is not possible, at the earliest practicable time, remove as much of the waste as is necessary to prevent further release of dangerous waste to the environment and to allow inspection and repair of the tank system to be performed,” Holmes wrote. She also said the plan would boost energy efficiency of appliances and buildings, plus expand renewable energy.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), using its authority under the Clean Air Act, has already proposed controls on new plants, but the rules have been delayed – to the chagrin of states and environmental groups threatening to sue over the delays, the Associated Press reported.

Environmental groups in the US have been pushing Obama to clamp down on emissions not only from new plants, but existing ones as well.

Coal-fired power plants are the single largest source of America's greenhouse gas emissions – responsible for up to 40 percent of carbon pollution – and have long been a target of environmental campaigners.

Doubtful!

The Ground is not a safe Environment where you can hide Iodine,
there must be Traces of it and this Traces would be visible in the
whole Northern Hemisphere, ergo- No Fission!
