Increased incidence of dog-bite injuries after the Fukushima nuclear accident
OBJECTIVE: To assess the localized incidence of dog bites following the nuclear accident related to the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. METHODS: We identified the patients with dog bites in our hospital in Minamisoma City, Fukushima, during the period from 1 year prior to the earthquake to 3.5 months following it, and calculated the monthly and weekly incidence proportions by dividing the patient number by the total emergency room visits. We also analyzed the data by the characteristics of the patients. RESULTS: We identified 27 dog-bite cases during the post-disaster period. The median monthly incidence proportion during the pre-disaster period and the highest monthly incidence proportion during the post-disaster period were 0.21 and 6.50 per 100 visits, respectively. The weekly incidence proportion peaked at 3 weeks after the earthquake and thereafter decreased to the baseline level. CONCLUSION: The Fukushima nuclear accident may be associated with an increased incidence of dog bites, and the prolonged evacuation in response to the radiation contamination may have prolonged the increased incidence after the disaster. Physicians and local residents should recognize this potential hazard. Countermeasures to contend with this risk should be a mandatory aspect of disaster preparedness, including for nuclear accidents.

Fukushima operator wants to restart reactors
Tokyo Electric Power Co is readying an application for the re-firing of two of the seven units at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa in Niigata prefecture in the north of Japan.

The entire power station has been shuttered since around 12 months after the tsunami-sparked meltdowns at Fukushima in March 2011.

"We decided at a board meeting to apply for the safety assessment for Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant's reactors No. 6 and No. 7 as early as possible," company president Naomi Hirose told reporters.

The two reactors have a power generation capacity of 1.36 million kilowatts each.

Utilities lack funds to decommission reactors; consumers may foot the bill
Under lax oversight by the industry ministry, electric power companies have failed to set aside enough money to decommission their nuclear reactors, creating a 170-billion-yen ($1.71-billion) shortfall that consumers may be forced to cover.

According to an investigation by The Asahi Shimbun, decommissioning funds fell short of the targets for 34 of the nation’s 50 nuclear reactors as of March based on the idea that reactors should be mothballed after 40 years in operation.

Following up this article..”“Iodine-131″ detected from various school lunch ingredients from North Kanto area” [URL]

Having the detection data widely reported, on 7/1/2013 Obihiro city board of education announced on their website to state Iodine-131 was mistakenly detected.

They stated probably because the ventilation of the analysis room was not properly operated, the radioactive noble gas Rn-222 was attached to the equipment and the descendant nuclide Pb-214 was mis-detected to be I-131 up to 17.32 Bq/kg, according to the analyzing equipment maker.

They have already changed all the I-131 readings of June to be “Not detected”. They plan to change the I-131 readings in the date of May soon as they finish analyzing as well.

The world is already forgetting Fukushima accident but Fukushima Diary is growing for some reason.
There are ups and downs but since the end of last year, the site has been read and talked about by more and more people for some reason.
I don’t know why but moderately speaking, this is absolutely a good thing and it cheers me up.
Now I’m in the most unstable situation in my life but can reach more people than ever.

Among zillions of the websites, only few websites update about Fukushima situation on the earth. This is very strange. but I don’t plan to charge. Anyone can read every article on Fukushima Diary.

I don’t think information can be priced. It’s copiable, and material cost is almost zero (Only labor costs).
Information is necessary for some people. It must be provided for free like air.
However some readers kindly admire my work and donate to keep me running. I think this is another achievement of Fukushima Diary and this should be the future of the world.

I don’t lock important articles from un-paying subscribers, I don’t send special mail letter for paying readers. They would just copy and spread. Censoring the entire web would cost much more than the profit.

If I write articles sensationally only to increase the web traffic, it would damage my credibility and I will have nothing to eat for dinner. This is how it incentives me.

NHK is going to charge us only if you have a PC. They say it’s because you could have seen NHK. They came to my apartment in Japan as well. They came several times. but I didn’t have a TV. Now if they come to my place, they would charge me because I have a PC.

They totally misunderstand the reality. If the potential audience don’t pay NHK, that’s because they don’t admire NHK’s work. If it can’t sustain the current scale of the company, just downsize yourself.
Just blame yourself not the audience.

This is the same for the government, corporations and banks.

Fukushima Diary is never going to take advantage of the readers. I know it’s becoming a public monument. No matter how old Fukushima accident becomes, it will be protected by my philosophy.

so fuck off atom boy... the world is growing a voice, you are losing your chess game.....

“A lot of plants have problems, but often times it’s a single problem a plant will have ...,” he said. “But for Davis-Besse, they have just a whole long list of problems, and that’s what concerns us too —that those might line up one day in a very bad way.”

Small fire reported at Fukushima nuclear plant

TOKYO — A fire broke out in a rubbish pile at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex on Tuesday, the operator said, the latest in a series of incidents at the crippled plant.

Workers discovered flames licking at piles of cardboard boxes placed near an incineration facility shortly before 1 p.m., Tokyo Electric Power Co said.

The fire damaged an area of about four meters by two meters, but was put out in a hour, it said.

The fire did not affect radiation levels in the plant, and no one was injured, it said.

As already reported... my guess is that they will be allowed to restart #6 and #7 to ease TEPCO's rotten finances... time will tell...

TEPCO to file for procedures to restart idled nuclear reactors

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Tuesday it will swiftly apply for a state safety assessment of two of its reactors in Niigata Prefecture to restart their operation, even as the utility continues to grapple with the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The announcement was made ahead of the introduction of a set of new nuclear regulations next Monday, which will effectively restart the stalled procedures to resume the country's reactors, most of which are currently offline.

"As we have finished preparations for the Nos. 6 and 7 reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, we have decided to file applications (for their safety assessment) as swiftly as possible after the new regulations take effect," TEPCO President Naomi Hirose said at a press conference in Tokyo.

Another Vogtle Reactor Deadline Passes: Taxpayer Advocates Warn Government Keeps Pushing Bad Deal That Wall Street Won't Touch

WASHINGTON, July 2, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Think Washington has learned its lesson after Solyndra? Think again. The nonpartisan budget watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense (TCS) pointed out today that another deadline has passed for the U.S. government, Southern Company, and other entities involved in the controversial Vogtle nuclear reactor project to reach agreement on loan guarantee terms.

Ryan Alexander, president, Taxpayers for Common Sense, said:  "This whole thing has the stink of another Solyndra-like goose egg for American taxpayers. Wall Street is sending every possible signal that investors would be ill-advised to hop on the Vogtle bandwagon and yet Washington is taking exactly the opposite tack:  bending over backwards to find a way to put taxpayers on the hook, no matter how bad the terms. We say: Enough is enough. There has been ample time to work out a deal here. Now that we know Wall Street wants no part of it, we think it's time for prudent people in D.C. to follow suit and put the interests of taxpayers first."

Experts to try and determine how much plutonium is in Fukushima melted nuclear fuel — Neutron rays to be measured

The JAEA called it the “world’s first” attempt to devise such a measuring technique, as technical issues prevented a similar initiative after the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident in the United States.

But the process of measuring the substances may prove difficult because the melted fuel must first be removed [...]
