Review of NASA’s Evidence Reports on Human Health Risks [link to www8.nationalacademies.org] Project Scope NASA has requested a study from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to provide an independent review of more than 30 evidence reports on human health risks for long-duration and exploration space flight. The evidence reports, which are publicly available, are categorized into four broad areas: (1) behavioral health and performance; (2) human health countermeasures (with a focus on bone metabolism and orthopedics, nutrition, immunology, cardiac and pulmonary physiology); (3) radiation; and (4) human factors issues. The reports are revised on an ongoing basis to incorporate new scientific information. In conducting this study, an IOM ad hoc committee will build on the 2008 IOM report, Review of NASA’s Human Research Program Evidence Books. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 38176253 Sweden 08/03/2013 08:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We already knew this 2 years ago, but it's encouraging to see it in a Japanese newspaper... Fukushima clean-up turns toxic for TEPCO TOKYO — Two and a half years after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, the operator of the wrecked plant faces a daunting array of unknowns. Why the plant intermittently emits steam; how groundwater seeps into its basement; whether fixes to the cooling system will hold; how nearby groundwater is contaminated by radioactive matter; how toxic water ends up in the sea and how to contain water that could overwhelm the facility’s storage tanks. What is clear, say critics, is that Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) is keeping a nervous Japanese public in the dark about what it does know. The inability of the utility to get to grips with the situation raises questions over whether it can successfully decommission the Fukushima Daiichi plant, say industry experts and analysts. “They let people know about the good things and hide the bad things. This culture of cover-up hasn’t changed since the disaster,” said Atsushi Kasai, a former researcher at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. [link to www.japantoday.com] . |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38176253 . It is gratifying to see much more attention being paid to fuku. Even on the forum.. it seems that more people are aware, and well-informed, as well. I just wish that the full weight of public opinion had come to bear on TPTB in the early days of the crisis. Maybe a consortium to deal with it immediately. Instead, tepco was allowed to bumble and stumble themselves, and us, into what very well may be the greatest disaster we will ever live to see. I fear the Pacific will be lost.. Radio-nuclides don't dilute in the ocean. The ramifications are mind-boggling. |

[...] the water level in observation wells has risen sharply to about 1 meter from the ground’s surface, [...] the walls can only be built with their tops at 1.8 meters beneath the surface. That means the water levels in the observation wells have already risen above the top edges. If such a situation continues, the completed barriers will be unable to prevent the water from reaching the ocean. In addition, calculations show that if the water levels continue to rise at the current pace, contaminated water will flood the surface in about three weeks. [...] |

A joint research organization to figure out how to figure out how to fix it. So they'll study the matter as mammoth masses of tritium flow..... 40 trillion tons have already leaked. Maybe all this "preparedness" is because they are finally going to "nuke" the plant, as someone suggested. |

I have to admit that I am curious as to just how they plan on dealing with hundreds of tons of hot liquified reactor cores. Preferably before they interact with a large amount of underground water and create radioactive steam volcanoes. |
