Fla. regulators OK Duke nuclear rate hike

TALLAHASEE, FLA. — Duke Energy's nearly 2 million customers in Florida will keep paying for the utility giant's now-shuttered and abandoned nuclear power plants for the next several years.

And on Monday, that cost went up higher.

State utility regulators voted to let Duke Energy Florida raise rates 89 cents a month for the average customer to pay for its Crystal River Plant, in Citrus County.

The charge, which would take effect in January 2014, would last up to seven years. It would be in addition to a separate charge customers have been paying to build a nuclear power plant in Levy County in north Florida.

Last week the Charlotte, N.C.-based company announced it was scuttling its plans to build the $24.7 billion plant, citing changes in the energy market and regulatory hurdles at the state and federal level.

The company announced in February that it was closing the Crystal River nuclear plant, located near the Gulf of Mexico. Workers cracked a concrete containment building during an attempt to upgrade the plant in 2009. An attempt to fix the problem in 2011 resulted in more cracks.

State Rep. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, blasted the decision to let Duke — formerly known as Progress Energy — collect even more money for the Crystal River plant.

"Every customer of Duke Progress Energy should be absolutely outraged," Fasano said.

Fukushima Prefecture requests Japanese government remove TEPCO from management of Fukushima Daiichi decommissioning

On Tuesday, officials from Fukushima prefecture inspected areas near where an underground tunnel is thought to be filled with contaminated water.  Many of the officials expressed their displeasure with TEPCO’s inability to proactively deal with the problems arising at the crippled nuclear complex.

Later Tuesday, Fukushima Prefecture official requested that Japan’s central government intervene with the critical emergency situation at Fukushima Daiichi and ensure that TEPCO properly mitigates the continued leakage of contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean.  The prefecture also asked that the central government take control and responsibility for the decommissioning of the damaged reactors.

Wall St. Journal: Official warns Fukushima reactor buildings could “topple” — Tepco’s work to change flow of groundwater can form pools below surface that soften the earth

[...] as [Tepco] prepares this week to start work on a new set of measures that would ring off and cap the area where the most highly contaminated water has been found, some experts and regulators are saying that the battle to completely contain radioactivity to the site of one of the world’s worst nuclear accidents may be a losing one. [...]

It’s preparing to extend the underground hardened-earth barrier in a ring around the most heavily contaminated section of coastline, in hopes of heading groundwater off before it can flood in. Tepco is also proposing to cap that ringed section with gravel and asphalt, so nothing gets out. The operator is hoping to get an initial ring of hardened ground done by October. [...]

But there’s a risk to changing the flow of groundwater in the ways that Tepco is considering, said Tatsuya Shinkawa, nuclear accident response director of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, at a news conference last month. The water could pool dangerously underground, softening the earth and potentially toppling the reactor buildings, he said. [...]

Fishermen in Iwaki postpone test catches offshore

The fisheries cooperative of Iwaki City, about 30 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, has decided to postpone offshore test-fishing originally planned for next month.

The decision on Wednesday came as water contaminated with radioactivity continues leaking into the sea from the plant.

Govt. to help TEPCO handle nuclear water leak

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has instructed the industry ministry to take immediate action to prevent further leakage of radiation-tainted water into the sea from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Abe gave the order to Industry Minister Toshimitsu Motegi at a meeting of government officials on the nuclear disaster.

Abe told the officials that people are extremely concerned about the leaks and that it's an urgent problem that must be dealt with.

He said the government will not leave the issue entirely up to the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, and that officials must take steps to help the utility.

Nuclear water... sometimes the reporters are funny... lol...

300 tons of nuclear water leaks to sea daily

Japan's industry ministry estimates that about 300 tons of radiation-tainted water leaks from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea daily.

The ministry says some 1,000 tons of groundwater flows from a mountainside into the plant premises every day.

Of the volume, 300 tons is tainted with radioactive substances when it flows through an area near wells before leaking into the sea. High levels of radioactive materials have been detected in the wells.

Some 400 of the remaining 700 tons flows into the basements of the plant's No.1 to No.4 reactor buildings. 300 tons of untainted water flows into the sea.

300 tons of toxic water flowing into sea from Fukushima plant daily: gov't

Around 300 tons of groundwater containing radioactive substances could be flowing from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex into the adjacent Pacific Ocean, the government said Wednesday in the latest revelation of how Japan is still struggling to contain the 2011 nuclear disaster.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed the same day that the government will firmly support Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s efforts to deal with the massive buildup of radioactive water at the plant, saying he cannot leave the matter up to the utility alone.

Arkansas back in action

The Arkansas Nuclear One power plant is preparing to have both reactor units back in operation, four months after a fatal industrial accident during refurbishment work.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission recorded 1% output from unit 1 yesterday as that reactor began start-up activities to eventually bring it to full power operation. It was taken offline early this year for refuelling and refurbishment work which required the removal of the generator stator. On 31 March the gantry used to remove this from the turbine hall collapsed, sending the 500-tonne component crashing through a hole in the floor to a heavy transport vehicle below. One man was killed and two seriously injured.

Certain electrical systems shared by both reactors were damaged in the incident with the immediate knock-on effect that unit 2 shut down, waiting around ten hours before normal grid power supply was restored. This unit is currently operating at 100% power.

Japanese government pledges to support TEPCO clean up Fukushima Daiichi groundwater contamination

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised to increase the central governments’ efforts to mitigate the contaminated water escaping from Fukushima Daiichi into the Pacific Ocean and tapped the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry Minister Toshimitsu Motegi as the official in charge of the situation.

“It is an urgent problem,” Abe said. “We will not leave this to Tepco, but put together a government strategy. We will direct Tepco to make sure there is a swift and multi-faceted approach in place.” Abe also asked the Nuclear Regulation Authority to come up with effective measures.

I like the gray squirrels fried like chicken.. taste quite like chicken/frog legs. Really tender if they are young squirrels.

The fox squirrels are tough and stringy... unless you slow cook and serve with gravy 'n dumplins.

Kangaroo steak are nice, bit more taste then cow/ beef

Koala... GRIN, we don't eat them cuddly things.. it's a joke here.... (they kinda endangered and i think you would get shot)

Crocodile is nicer than you think... it's like crab and textured like beef.

Witchity grubs are like watery peanut butter, but crunchy when they're cooked.

Snake is quite appetizing but most of ours are deadly.. kinda like a land-based tasting squid texture.

:)

I did about 4 years of bush-tucker camps with kids when i was in western australia with the aborigine dudes would come out to freak the kids taste buds... was fun....

I like croc and rattlesnake.
Very good meat.
Not much inherent flavor.. but accept flavor easily via marinade and spice.

No crocs around here but wife's cousin comes up from louisiana with the goodies.
Plenty of large rattlesnakes here.
