Highly toxic puddles found near water tanks at Fukushima plant

Puddles with extremely high radiation levels have been found near water storage tanks on the premises of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japan's nuclear regulators and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday.

The radiation level, measured around 50 centimeters above the toxic water, stood at about 100 millisieverts per hour, TEPCO said, while acknowledging that the water likely came from a tank. At least around 120 liters is estimated to have leaked out.

TEPCO denied that toxic water had flowed into the adjacent Pacific Ocean, but the Nuclear Regulation Authority ordered the utility to study the possibility that the toxic water had escaped into the sea through nearby drains.

The used tanks, about 300 of them, have an estimated 5 year life span for the gaskets and bolts. Many of the tanks already have two years of use on them. These leaks could be the start of failures in these tanks. As seen in the ALPS system, the contaminated water has had a very corrosive impact on storage systems. As these tanks begin to fail TEPCO will have to install replacement tanks and transfer water. This will require even more land and manpower.

They should have learned from Hanford. Tanks will not last for the full design life under corrosive conditions.

A record one million foreigners visited Japan in July.

Officials at the Japan National Tourism Organization say the weaker yen has encouraged more travelers to visit the country. Another factor is the easing of visa requirements for travelers from Southeast Asian countries.

The organization estimates that 1,003,000 foreigners visited Japan for business and tourism last month.

The figure topped one million for the first time. It's the highest since the government began keeping records in 1964, and surpassed by 80,000 the previous high, which was marked in April. The number of foreign visitors also rose 18.4 percent compared to last July.

Nuclear regulator urges checking all tanks

Japan's nuclear regulator has called for an immediate check of all water storage tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

The head of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, Shunichi Tanaka, told a news conference on Wednesday that there are about 350 other tanks at the site structurally identical to the one which leaked 300 tons.

He said that if a leak occurs in one tank, it must be assumed that something similar will occur in others.

Thyroid cancer found in 18 Fukushima children

Medical examinations in Fukushima Prefecture following the nuclear crisis of 2011 have detected 18 children with thyroid cancer.

The finding was reported on Tuesday by a prefectural panel examining the impact of radiation on the health of local residents.

The prefecture is giving medical checkups to all 360,000 children aged 18 or younger at the time of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in March 2011.

Leaking tank at Fukushima plant has no water gauge

The operator of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says it may have failed to find a leak of radioactive wastewater from a tank because it lacks a water gauge.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, on Monday found a massive leak of highly contaminated wastewater from a tank near the No.4 reactor. Water had seeped outside the barrier around the tank.

The tank is 11 meters high and can store up to 1,000 tons of wastewater. TEPCO said the tank's water level had dropped nearly three meters. That means more than 300 tons had been lost.

The utility says the tank has no water gauge, so workers at the plant did not notice the leak until they saw water outside the barrier.

The tank is one of about 350 at the plant made from steel plates and bolts. Four cases of leaks have been reported so far.

TEPCO nuclear chief to be stationed in Fukushima

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says it will station its nuclear power chief near the facility to oversee its decommissioning process, particularly handling of radioactive water.

Tokyo Electric Power Company revealed last month that contaminated groundwater at the plant is seeping into the sea. This week, it said more than 300 tons of wastewater had leaked from a storage tank there.

On Wednesday, the utility said it will send Vice President Zengo Aizawa, who heads the firm's nuclear power division, to Fukushima Prefecture to take direct command of decommissioning efforts. It said the move is aimed at clarifying the chain of command and facilitating information sharing among TEPCO officials in charge.

Japan upgrades Fukushima leak to highest level in two years

TOKYO — Japan on Wednesday issued its highest-level warning over the crippled Fukushima plant since a tsunami triggered the nuclear crisis two years ago, saying there was “no time to lose” to seal a tank that has leaked 300 tonnes of radioactive water.

Nuclear regulators said the leak represented a level-three “serious incident” on the U.N.‘s seven-point International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), which measures radiation accidents.

“Something that we were very much concerned about has occurred,” Nuclear Regulation Authority chairman Shunichi Tanaka told a meeting in Tokyo. “We are in a situation where there is no time to lose.”

On June 9, 2011, we received an instruction document*, "Installment of treatment facility and storing facility of water including highly concentrated radioactive materials at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (Instruction)" from Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
(Previously announced on June 9, 2011)


Since then, per the instruction, we have been treating the water accumulated in the Central Radioactive Waste Treatment Facility that contains highly concentrated radioactive materials. We announce today we submitted a report to the Nuclear Regulation Authority regarding the latest updates of storage and treatment of the accumulated water.
