“I’m worried, but not enough to stop surfing,” said Naoto Sakai, 31, who comes to test himself against the waves at least three times a week.

“If I worried about what I eat and where I live, I think I would become too stressed. I just try not to think about it too much.”

Toshihisa Mishina, 42, got back in the water again last year, but says there is no way he would let his 12-year-old child join him.

“I worry about the youngsters because if they are exposed to radiation now, it might affect them when they grow up,” he said.

Ahead of Olympic vote, Tokyo gov. assures no nuclear radiation threat

The governor of Tokyo, which is bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, gave an assurance Friday that there is no threat of nuclear radiation in his city, saying radiation levels are on par with other major cities.

"The radiation dosage in Tokyo is absolutely no different from that of New York, London and Paris," Tokyo Gov. Naoki Inose said at a news conference. It was called apparently to counter concern prompted by the revelation that highly radioactive water recently leaked into the Pacific ocean from a storage tank at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant located about 215 kilometers northeast of the Japanese capital.

At a time when everyone is wondering where the coriums of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant may be, it is interesting to know the nature of the terrain where they could possibly be hiding. Although all documents used to write this article are readily available, most are in Japanese and this explains that to date knowledge of the geology of Fukushima is fragmented. Based on the geological survey that was conducted prior to building the plant, as well as on results of seismic testing and recent research related to drilling, this article will attempt to give an updated picture of the nature of the substratum of the nuclear plant, which may help to predict possible developments in the currently unfolding disaster.

General geological environment

The Fukushima Daiichi Power Station is located on the east coast of Honshu island, in northeastern Japan, on a Cenozoic sedimentary ground, i.e. belonging to the current geological era (from 65.5 million years ago to the present). It is separated from the Abukuma granite plateau by the Futuba fault.

I finally have a coherent picture. 2.5 years of obstruction by nuclear industry aimed at preventing people from having any coherent picture of the sequence of decisions which resulted in this nuclear disaster.

1. They lowered the Fukushima coast by 10 metres to make it cheaper to pump cooling water to the proposed power plant. 2. They built the power plant over an aquifer and on ground with a fault line present
3. They built the basements below sea level.
4. The quake diverted the underground river of the aquifer through the basements
5. Being below sea level the emergency generators and switchgear were doomed to be flooded.
6. cooling failed, the reactors melted down, the 70 holes in each reactor bottom (design of control rod entry) meant fuel and water leaked from bottom of reactors.
7. TEPCO decision to put emergency generators and switchgear in basements. to save money in 1966.
8. 400 tons of water must be poured into reactors per day to keep them cool.
9. this water enters the underground river and flows to the sea.
10. fuel is too radioactive to approach and remove and will remain so for years.
11. the flow of radioactive water to the sea will continue. 12. No nuclear expert on earth knows the disposition of the fuel inside and outside the reactors.
13. Japan and the world must live with this disaster for a long time to come.
14. There is insufficient knowledge and no technology which will stop lthis disaster soon.
15. The past 2.5 years have seen a river of lies and with holding of information about these facts. The idea that freezing the soil will stop the flow of water to the sea is insufficient to work. Can they freeze enough and go down deep enough to freeze the aquifer? I doubt it. They have not started yet.
16. If all the known facts of this had been disclosed in March 2011, the people of Japan and the world would have turned with very great anger against the people who did this and defend this. The delay in information has actually made this anger worse.

If I were a rich man living in Japan I would start fish farming in the lakes of Japan and become even richer, for I would not eat anything caught in the sea. Sorry to say.

Corium Potential Flow Paths:

There was an estimated 50 tons of reactor fuel and 800 tons of graphite left in the reactor at Chernobyl after the explosion there.
Fukushima has an estimated 70 tons of fuel in unit 1 and 90 tons of fuel in units 2 and 3. It is not know how much was ejected in
the explosions at Fukushima. So the reactors at Fukushima may contain more fuel in the core, but Chernobyl has a large amount of
graphite mixed in.

There is only 2.7 meters of concrete under the torus suppression chamber..
where they believe the corium melted through.

High radiation readings suggest new water tank leak at Fukushima

Very high radiation levels were observed Saturday at three tanks and one of the pipes connecting them at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, pointing to the possibility that radioactive water may have newly leaked, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

The radiation readings were from 70 to 1,800 millisieverts per hour, although none of the tanks showed any visible drop in their water levels, the plant operator said, adding it is investigating the cause.

The tanks are built of steel plates held together by bolts, the same structure as the tank that was found last week to have leaked 300 tons of highly toxic water.

No. 3 reactor at Oi plant to be suspended Mon.

Kansai Electric Power Co. will suspend the No. 3 reactor at its Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture on Monday afternoon for mandatory routine checks.

The No. 4 reactor at the plant will also be suspended on Sept. 15, halting Japan's nuclear power supply again for the first time in around 14 months. The two reactors are the only units currently online in Japan.

It will be the second time for all 50 commercial reactors in Japan to be offline since the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi plant disaster heightened public concern over the safety of nuclear power.

Do we even have months until Fukushima Daiichi is evacuated?

The focus on the water contamination from the tanks is a distraction.
That radiation is mostly beta.

It has been a perilous situation all along.
Every so often, one of the hazards is discovered.
They aren't usually new hazards, but hazards which have existed and are treated as new discoveries.
On this forum, there is a rush to get pins and the attention they bring.
This has the net result of distracting from the really major issues.
Not my style.

The main pressing issue is unit 4 SFP.
To remove those 1300 fuel assemblies safely is a monumental task.. to attempt it manually, without computer control, adds exponentially to the risk.
My pucker factor will be a 10 when tepco begins the removal process in November.
Hope for the best.. but, remember.. tepco has a verifiable track record of screwing things up.

The melted cores are in the ground.
Not much can be done about them for many years.
New tech must be developed to deal with them.. sometime in the future.

It is what it is.
Hence my anti-nuke status.

It should be remembered that tepco lied out their ass throughout this nuclear crisis, as we determined early on.
The reports were not matching the readings and information we uncovered in Fuku1 thread..

They also withheld the plume information from the people, creating havoc during the eventual evacuations.
Homes and schools were unknowingly in the path of the plume.
Residents evacuating, unknowingly drove into the plume.

It is mandated in nuclear regulations that SPEEDI, the system in place for emergency evacuation information, be implemented immediately upon ascertaining the direction of the radioactive plume.

For this, the top management at tepco should be indicted.

TEPCO steps up monitoring of toxic water leaks

The operator of the disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has boosted efforts to monitor hundreds of storage tanks holding radioactive water.

Tokyo Electric Power Company has increased the number of inspectors from 10 to 90 and doubled the tank's monitoring activities to 4 times a day.

On August 19th, TEPCO workers found contaminated water leak from a storage tank in an area near the number 4 reactor.

Over the weekend, the operator detected extremely high levels of radiation in storage tanks in 2 other areas. More water leaks were also found.

Japan's oil firm starts production in Iraq

Japan Petroleum Exploration Company, or JAPEX, has become the first Japanese firm to start full-scale oil production in Iraq.

JAPEX officials say the company started pumping crude at the Garraf oil field in southern Iraq on Saturday.

JAPEX began developing the mid-sized field jointly with the Malaysian national oil company, Petronas, 4 years ago.

Daily output is expected to reach 230,000 barrels in 2017. That's more than 5 percent of Japan's total imports.

Is the United States remaining vigilant to Fukushima risks?

As our readers may be aware, on multiple occasions over the last two years Russia has made data public on contaminated imports from Japan which have been sent back due to radiation concerns. In early August, Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s federal customer rights protection agency told Russian media outlets that some 112 contaminated batch lots of goods from Japan had been barred from entering the country after failing radiation tests.

Naturally, I wanted to see if I could get the same information from the United States Customs and Border Patrol Agency. I contacted them and spoke with one of their Public Affairs officials. I requested the total number of vehicles and shipping containers from Japan which had failed radiation tests for a period between January of 2011 and to date. I was first told that the information requested was not immediately available, and that they would be unable to meet my press deadline. After I followed up a few days later and asked whether or not I would have to file a FOIA request to get this information, I was told that they had checked with multiple offices within the CBP and unfortunately “the specific information” I had requested was not tracked, instead of not immediately available.

Nuclear reactor work given to Rolls-Royce

DALLAS, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Plant process computers for two generating units at a nuclear power plant in Texas are being replaced by Rolls-Royce under a $13.7 million contract.

The contract was awarded by Luminant, the largest power generator in Texas and owner of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Reactor, which is located near Glen Rose, Texas, and which features has two pressurized water reactors with a combined generating capacity of 2,300 megawatts.

Under the award, Rolls-Royce will replace the ageing plant process computers on the reactors and also the plant process computer training system.
