World's first undersea power generation

A Japanese shipbuilding company and a state-run university have developed a new ocean thermal energy system that generates power undersea, the world's first of its kind.

The ocean thermal energy system works by using the difference in temperature between deep seawater and shallow seawater. It uses warm water from the shallow parts of the sea to evaporate liquid ammonium. The steam that is created is then used to turn turbines and generate electricity. It is then cooled to its former liquid state using cold water pumped from the depths of the ocean. The process is repeated.

Shipbuilding company Japan Marine United and Saga University are planning to conduct a test of their new system. They aim to put it into practical use in 7 years.

Taiwanese nuclear plant conducts disaster drill

A nuclear power plant in Taiwan has conducted a disaster drill assuming a massive earthquake and tsunami caused a blackout at the plant. The drill was intended to calm the public alarmed by Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant accident.

About 1,000 people from utilities and related organizations took part in the drill on Tuesday. The plant is in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan.

The exercise was conducted based on a magnitude 8.2 quake that triggered a 13-meter tsunami. It was assumed that radiation had leaked from the reactors.

Work not begun at 57% of levees in disaster zone

NHK has learned that only 17 percent of levees planned along the Pacific coast of eastern Japan have been completed, and that work hasn't begun on 57 percent of them.

The central and local governments plan to build levees totaling about 410 kilometers along the Pacific coast from Aomori to Chiba prefectures, which suffered tsunami damage in March 2011.

Of the 574 planned levees, 99 were completed as of the end of August, but 330 were still in the planning stage.

Vietnam lifts radiation inspection on Japanese food imports

Vietnam lifted earlier this month a radiation inspection requirement for fresh food imported from Japan, ending the measure taken after the Fukushima nuclear meltdown in 2011, according to the agriculture ministry.

The measure, removed Sept. 1, had required that all imported fresh food originating from Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Tochigi prefectures be checked for radioactive materials and that samples of fresh food items from other parts of Japan be checked for radiation. Vietnam no longer considers the measure necessary, the ministry said Tuesday.

Japan's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi had asked the Vietnamese authorities to lift the regulation during his visit to the country in May.

Contracts for new Pakistan reactors

Contracts were recently signed for the Karachi Coastal Nuclear Power Project in Pakistan comprising two ACP1000 units. The order marks the first foreign purchase of the Chinese reactor design.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has been contracted to build the plant on a turnkey basis. At a signing ceremony in Shanghai at the end of August, CNNC signed contracts with sub-contractors for the project. The main contractor is CNNC subsidiary China Zhongyuan Engineering Company. Other Chinese companies which have been involved in the construction of reactors at the Pakistan's Chashma plant will also participate in the project. These include China Nuclear Power Engineering, the Nuclear Power Institute of China and the East China Electric Power Designing Institute.

S. Korea ex-vice minister charged in nuclear graft probe

A former deputy minister has been charged with taking bribes as part of a corruption probe into South Korea's nuclear industry which has already indicted nearly 100 people, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Park Young-June, a former vice minister in charge of energy, stands accused of accepting 50 million won ($45,000) bribes in 2010 in return for favouring a constructor bidding for a nuclear reactor contract.

The 53-year-old is also charged with taking backhanders from Kim Jong-Shin, the one-time chief of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, the state-run company which oversees nuclear power plants.

Supervisor at V.C. Summer nuclear power plant fails for-cause fitness for duty test

A supervisor at the V.C. Summer nuclear power plant in South Carolina confirmed positive for alcohol during a for-cause fitness for duty test. The employee has had their access to the site terminated.

Fitness for duty tests are administered either randomly, in a lottery-style system where “winners” get to report to the medical office for testing, or for-cause, which are administrated after supervisors note aberrant behaviors and order follow-up testing to ensure compliance.

Re: *** Fukushima *** and other nuclear-----updates and links
This plan was emailed to me last night:

In addition to the spread of the truth about Fukushima, a definite plan to solve the problems presented by this situation is needed at this time. Here is one.
" Such a plan can give definite vision and purpose to those of us who want this situation resolved as soon as possible. The Plan is a common sense list of actions to be taken to stop the radiation and clean up Fukushima using current technology. This plan is the beginning of providing a direction we follow to resolve the problems of Fukushima."

[snip]
Introduction to The Plan to Stop the Fukushima Radiation Leakage
and Clean it Up As Soon As Possible

So far, a great deal of very helpful information on the disastrous situation at Fukushima has been presented by brave and diligent individuals. Most of this information has been very helpful, but of a horrifying, depressing, and despair inducing nature. In addition to this very necessary flow of information, the time has come to present solutions that will take us from despair to empowerment. A vision of what needs to be done is needed. The following "Plan to Stop the Fukushima Radiation Leakage and Clean it Up As Soon As Possible" (The Plan), attempts to provide this needed vision. This vision (or a similar one) can become the organizing principle for empowering those who want the Fukushima created world-wide destruction of health stopped as soon as possible. The Plan will help to provide the needed hope and optimism that will inspire us to get going and solve this problem.

Though parts of this plan may seem overly ambitious and/or far fetched, they are within the realm of, not only possibility, but are actually very doable (as The Plan points out).

We can thank those decision makers who have put us in this predicament for giving us the motivation to make a different world; a nuclear free world. Cleaning up Fukushima is only the beginning of ridding the world of this nightmare technology.

As word of the murderously toxic radioactive pollution spreads, and as word of The Plan's vision spreads, more and more of us can join in getting those in power to respond to our needs. If they refuse, we can vote them out of office and put in our own people through the recall process; the write-in ballot; and/or taking over local, state, and national democrat and republican committees.

Without your belief and participation, those who created this lethal mess will remain the ones in charge of continuing to let Fukushima spew radioactivity for decades to come. Millions of children and adults will suffer needlessly with heart failure, cancers of the pancreas, liver, lungs, bone, thyroid, as well as leukemia.
Please keep an open mind to the vision stated in The Plan. Like what was written above, this is just the beginning. The Plan can be modified and improved. With your help in fulfilling this vision, the Fukushima radiation can be permanently stopped as soon as possible.

Best Wishes to All for Your Continued Good Health,

Citizen Earth [ed note: not Perth]

A very good friend of ours was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. It's a blood cancer that attacks the bones. We have been supporting their family and doing things to make life a bit better for them. There is no cure for Multiple Myeloma. He already has broken or fractured bones in his arm, ribs, and spine. Our goal is to make life as comfortable as possible.
