Japan Nuclear Fuel's Rokkasho plant in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, was to end the test run by the middle of this month. The test period is a prerequisite to starting full-scale operation of the plant. This is the 11th time Japan Nuclear Fuel has postponed the test run of the Rokkasho plant, but the first with no new timetable. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

On Monday, the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies released its analyses of satellite images of a launch base at Tongchang-ri in the country's northwest. They were taken on October 9th. The researchers say they have confirmed the completion of a wide road connecting an area where an apparent new launch pad is under construction to a missile assembly factory. Researchers at the government-affiliated Japan Atomic Energy Agency installed monitoring equipment in woods of northern Ibaraki Prefecture, near Fukushima Prefecture, in May 2011, 2 months after the accident. They hoped to learn how the cesium moved from fallen leaves to soil. The results of more than 2 years of research show that rain washed cesium off leaves 6 months after the accident, and that as the leaves decomposed, it moved to the surface of underlying soil. Izumida must approve the embattled utility’s plans to restart the reactors at Kashiwazaki Kariwa, the world’s biggest nuclear complex on the Japan Sea coast. “There are three things required of a company that runs nuclear power plants: don’t lie, keep your promises and fulfill your social responsibility,” Izumida said. The NRC also acted because Dresden personnel knew about Buhrman’s plan to commit an offsite crime, but failed to report the situation to plant management, as required by the regulatory agency. “We expect nuclear workers to be trustworthy and feel responsible for plant safety. This includes alerting management should they encounter questionable behavior in other workers. Plants must have effective programs and training to make sure employees adhere to these standards,” said NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia D. Pederson. [link to enformable.com] . |

The activity was later interrupted due to radioactive water leakage at the crippled facility. He lasted less than two weeks. Hayashi, 41, says he was recruited for a job monitoring the radiation exposure of workers leaving the plant in the summer of 2012. Instead, when he turned up for work, he was handed off through a web of contractors and assigned, to his surprise, to one of Fukushima’s hottest radiation zones. He was told he would have to wear an oxygen tank and a double-layer protective suit. Even then, his handlers told him, the radiation would be so high it could burn through his annual exposure limit in just under an hour. “I felt cheated and entrapped,” Hayashi said. “I had not agreed to any of this.” [link to www.japantoday.com] . |
